Diffusive dynamics in presence of deep energy minima and weak nongradient forces can be coarse-grained into a mesoscopic jump process over the various basins of attraction. Combining standard weak-noise results with a path integral expansion around equilibrium, we show that the emerging transition rates satisfy local detailed balance (LDB). Namely, the log ratio of the transition rates between nearby basins of attractions equals the free-energy variation appearing at equilibrium, supplemented by the work done by the nonconservative forces along the typical transition path. When the mesoscopic dynamics possesses a large-size deterministic limit, it can be further reduced to a jump process over macroscopic states satisfying LDB. The persistence of LDB under coarse graining of weakly nonequilibrium states is a generic consequence of the fact that only dissipative effects matter close to equilibrium.

An extension of the H-theorem for dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) to the case of a multi-component fluid is made. Detailed balance and an additional H-theorem are proved for an energy-conserving version of the DPD algorithm. The implications of t hese results for the statistical mechanics of the method are discussed.
We present a comprehensive study about the relationship between the way Detailed Balance is broken in non-equilibrium systems and the resulting violations of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem. Starting from stochastic dynamics with both odd and eve n variables under Time-Reversal, we exploit the relation between entropy production and the breakdown of Detailed Balance to establish general constraints on the non-equilibrium steady-states (NESS), which relate the non-equilibrium character of the dynamics with symmetry properties of the NESS distribution. This provides a direct route to derive extended Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations, expressing the linear response function in terms of NESS correlations. Such framework provides a unified way to understand the departure from equilibrium of active systems and its linear response. We then consider two paradigmatic models of interacting self-propelled particles, namely Active Brownian Particles (ABP) and Active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Particles (AOUP). We analyze the non-equilibrium character of these systems (also within a Markov and a Chapman-Enskog approximation) and derive extended Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations for them, clarifying which features of these active model systems are genuinely non-equilibrium.
As the core ingredient for spin polarization, the local equilibrium spin distribution function is derived from the detailed balance principle. The kinetic theory for interacting fermionic systems is applied to the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at quark l evel. Under the semi-classical expansion with respect to $hbar$ and non-perturbative expansion with respect to $N_c$, the kinetic equations for the vector and axial-vector distribution functions are derived with collision terms. It is found that, for an initially unpolarized system, non-zero spin polarization can be generated at the order of $hbar$ from the coupling between the vector and axial-vector charges. The local equilibrium spin polarization is derived from the requirement of detailed balance. It arises from the thermal vorticity and is orthogonal to the particle momentum.
The effect of a change of noise amplitudes in overdamped diffusive systems is linked to their unperturbed behavior by means of a nonequilibrium fluctuation-response relation. This formula holds also for systems with state-independent nontrivial diffu sivity matrices, as we show with an application to an experiment of two trapped and hydrodynamically coupled colloids, one of which is subject to an external random forcing that mimics an effective temperature. The nonequilibrium susceptibility of the energy to a variation of this driving is an example of our formulation, which improves an earlier version, as it does not depend on the time-discretization of the stochastic dynamics. This scheme holds for generic systems with additive noise and can be easily implemented numerically, thanks to matrix operations.

We propose an atomistic model for correlated particle dynamics in liquids and glasses predicting both slow stretched-exponential relaxation (SER) and fast compressed-exponential relaxation (CER). The model is based on the key concept of elastically i nteracting local relaxation events. SER is related to slowing down of dynamics of local relaxation events as a result of this interaction, whereas CER is related to the avalanche-like dynamics in the low-temperature glass state. The model predicts temperature dependence of SER and CER seen experimentally and recovers the simple, Debye, exponential decay at high temperature. Finally, we reproduce SER to CER crossover across the glass transition recently observed in metallic glasses.
