In this contribution, we will present a short overview of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) approach as a tool for studying the 3-dimensional structure of hadrons in high-energy (un)polarized hadron collisions. We will then summarize the present status of a running research programme that aims at constraining the poorly known transverse momentum dependent gluon Sivers function, through the study of single spin asymmetries in quarkonium (mainly $J/psi$), pion, and $D$-meson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC. Finally, we will shortly discuss perspectives for this field of research, emphasizing in particular its role in the physics programme of LHC in the fixed-target setup and NICA.

In this work we apply effective field theory (EFT) to observables in quarkonium production and decay that are sensitive to soft gluon radiation, in particular measurements that are sensitive to small transverse momentum. Within the EFT framework we s tudy $chi_Q$ decay to light quarks followed by the fragmentation of those quarks to light hadrons. We derive a factorization theorem that involves transverse momentum distribution (TMD) fragmentation functions and new quarkonium TMD shape functions. We derive renormalization group equations, both in rapidity and virtuality, which are used to evolve the different terms in the factorization theorem to resum large logarithms. This theoretical framework will provide a systematic treatment of quarkonium production and decay processes in TMD sensitive measurements.

The prediction of single spin asymmetry (SSA) in double $rm J/psi$ production in proton-proton collision is given out within the framework of non-relativistic QCD, using the recently obtained best fit parameters for the gluon Sivers function extracte d from PHENIX data in $rm p+p^uparrowtopi^0+X$. The color singlet state $rm ^3 S_1^{(1)}$ and color octet state $rm ^3 S_1^{(8)}$ are considered to the SSA contribution in the double $rm J/psi$ hadroproduction. Our result shows that a sizable asymmetry can be estimated as functions of different kinematic variables.
We study the production of prompt-photons at RHIC in the context of a generalised parton model framework, with a view to obtain information on the gluon Sivers function (GSF). At RHIC energy ($sqrt{s}=200$ GeV), the Compton process, $gqtogamma q$ con tributes significantly to the production of direct-photons at midrapidity and dominates it in the negative (backward) rapdity region. We find that for direct photons, asymmetries of upto 10% are allowed by a maximal gluon Sivers function. However, the asymmetry obtained using existing fits of the GSF available is literature is negligible. We also estimate the impact that photons produced via fragmentation can have on the signal and find that their inclusion can dilute the asymmetry by between 10-50% of the direct-photon value. Finally, using the Colour-Gauge Invariant generalised parton model (CGI-GPM) approach, we consider the effects of initial state and final state interactions which can affect the universality of the Sivers functions in different processes. We find that the inclusion of these effects leads to the size of the gluon contributions being roughly halved. However, in the backward region which we are interested in, the sizes of the quark contributions are suppressed even further, leading to increased dominance of the gluon contributions.
We discuss the production of photon pairs in gluon-gluon scattering in the context of the position-space resummation formalism at small transverse momentum. We derive the remaining unknown coefficients that arise at $O(alpha_S)$, as well as the remai ning $O(alpha_S^2)$ coefficient that occurs in the Sudakov factor. We comment on the impact of these coefficients on the normalization and shape of the resummed transverse momentum distribution of photon pairs, which comprise an important background to Higgs boson production at the LHC.
We compute the quark and gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative QCD. Our calculation is based on an expansion of the differential Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production cross sections about their collinear limit. This method allows us to employ cutting edge techniques for the computation of cross sections to extract the universal building blocks in question. The corresponding perturbative matching kernels for all channels are expressed in terms of simple harmonic polylogarithms up to weight five. As a byproduct, we confirm a previous computation of the soft function for transverse momentum factorization at N$^3$LO. Our results are the last missing ingredient to extend the $q_T$ subtraction methods to N$^3$LO and to obtain resummed $q_T$ spectra at N$^3$LL$^prime$ accuracy both for gluon as well as for quark initiated processes.
