We investigated the magnetotransport properties of mesoscopic platinum nanostructures (wires and rings) with sub-100 nm lateral dimensions at very low temperatures. Despite the strong spin-orbit interaction in platinum, oscillations of the conductance as a function of the external magnetic field due to quantum interference effects was found to appear. The oscillation was decomposed into Aharonov-Bohm periodic oscillations and aperiodic fluctuations of the conductance due to a magnetic flux piercing the loop of the ring and the metal wires forming the nanostructures, respectively. We also investigated the magnetotransport under different bias currents to explore the interplay between electron phase coherence and spin accumulation effects in strong spin-orbit conductors.

In a two-dimensional quantum dot in a GaAs heterostructure, the spin-orbit scattering rate is substantially reduced below the rate in a bulk two-dimensional electron gas [B.I. Halperin et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2106 (2001)]. Such a reduction can be undone if the spin-orbit coupling parameters acquire a spatial dependence, which can be achieved, e.g., by a metal gate covering only a part of the quantum dot. We calculate the effect of such spatially non-uniform spin-orbit scattering on the weak localization correction and the universal conductance fluctuations of a chaotic quantum dot coupled to electron reservoirs by ballistic point contacts, in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the plane of the quantum dot.
We report measurements of a new type of magnetoresistance in Pt and Ta thin films. The spin accumulation created at the surfaces of the film by the spin Hall effect decreases in a magnetic field because of the Hanle effect, resulting in an increase o f the electrical resistance as predicted by Dyakonov [PRL 99, 126601 (2007)]. The angular dependence of this magnetoresistance resembles the recently discovered spin Hall magnetoresistance in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, although the presence of a ferromagnetic insulator is not required. We show that this Hanle magnetoresistance is an alternative, simple way to quantitatively study the coupling between charge and spin currents in metals with strong spin-orbit coupling.
After one decade of the intensive theoretical and experimental explorations, whether interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) at metallic magnetic interfaces can effectively generate a spin current has remained in dispute. Here, utilizing the Ti/FeCoB bilayers that are unique for the negligible bulk spin Hall effect and the strong tunable ISOC, we establish that there is no significant charge-to-spin conversion at magnetic interfaces via spin-orbit filtering effect or Rashba-Edelstein(-like) effect even when the ISOC is stronger than that of a typical Pt/ferromagnet interface and can promote strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also find a minimal orbital Hall effect in 3d Ti.
In transition-metal dichalcogenides, electrons in the K-valleys can experience both Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. In this work, we show that the coexistence of Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings leads to a special type of valley Hall effe ct, which we call spin-orbit coupling induced valley Hall effect. Importantly, near the conduction band edge, the valley-dependent Berry curvatures generated by spin-orbit couplings are highly tunable by external gates and dominate over the intrinsic Berry curvatures originating from orbital degrees of freedom under accessible experimental conditions. We show that the spin-orbit coupling induced valley Hall effect is manifested in the gate dependence of the valley Hall conductivity, which can be detected by Kerr effect experiments.
We employ a path integral real time approach to compute the DC conductance and spin polarization for electrons transported across a ballistic Quantum Ring with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We use a piecewise semiclassical approximation for the part icle orbital motion and solve the spin dynamics exactly, by accounting for both Zeeman coupling and spin-orbit interaction at the same time. Within our approach, we are able to study how the interplay between Berry phase, Ahronov Casher phase, Zeeman interaction and weak localization corrections influences the quantum interference in the conductance within a wide range of externally applied fields. Our results are helpful in inerpreting recent measurements on interferometric rings.
