After one decade of the intensive theoretical and experimental explorations, whether interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) at metallic magnetic interfaces can effectively generate a spin current has remained in dispute. Here, utilizing the Ti/FeCoB bilayers that are unique for the negligible bulk spin Hall effect and the strong tunable ISOC, we establish that there is no significant charge-to-spin conversion at magnetic interfaces via spin-orbit filtering effect or Rashba-Edelstein(-like) effect even when the ISOC is stronger than that of a typical Pt/ferromagnet interface and can promote strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also find a minimal orbital Hall effect in 3d Ti.

In bilayer systems consisting of an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer adjacent to a metal with strong spin-orbit coupling, an applied in-plane current induces torques on the magnetization. The torques that arise from spin-orbit coupling are of particular interest. Here, we calculate the current-induced torque in a Pt-Co bilayer to help determine the underlying mechanism using first principles methods. We focus exclusively on the analogue to the Rashba torque, and do not consider the spin Hall effect. The details of the torque depend strongly on the layer thicknesses and the interface structure, providing an explanation for the wide variation in results found by different groups. The torque depends on the magnetization direction in a way similar to that found for a simple Rashba model. Artificially turning off the exchange spin splitting and separately the spin-orbit coupling potential in the Pt shows that the primary source of the field-like torque is a proximate spin-orbit effect on the Co layer induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling in the Pt.

We report magnetotransport properties of BaZnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Whereas electronic structure features Dirac states, such states are removed from the Fermi level by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and consequently electronic transport is dominated by the small hole and electron pockets. Our results are consistent with three dimensional (3D) but also with quasi two dimensional (2D) portions of the Fermi surface. The spin-orbit coupling-induced gap in Dirac states is much larger when compared to isostructural SrMnBi$_{2}$. This suggests that not only long range magnetic order but also mass of the alkaline earth atoms A in ABX$_{2}$ (A = alkaine earth, B = transition metal and X=Bi/Sb) are important for the presence of low-energy states obeying the relativistic Dirac equation at the Fermi surface
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of mesoscopic platinum nanostructures (wires and rings) with sub-100 nm lateral dimensions at very low temperatures. Despite the strong spin-orbit interaction in platinum, oscillations of the conductanc e as a function of the external magnetic field due to quantum interference effects was found to appear. The oscillation was decomposed into Aharonov-Bohm periodic oscillations and aperiodic fluctuations of the conductance due to a magnetic flux piercing the loop of the ring and the metal wires forming the nanostructures, respectively. We also investigated the magnetotransport under different bias currents to explore the interplay between electron phase coherence and spin accumulation effects in strong spin-orbit conductors.

The quantitative roles of the interfacial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and dampinglike spin-orbit torque ({tau}DL) have remained unsettled after a decade of intensive study. Here, we report a conclusive experim ent evidence that, because of the critical role of the interfacial orbital hybridization, the interfacial DMI is not necessarily a linear function of the interfacial SOC, e.g. at Au1-xPtx/Co interfaces where the interfacial SOC can be tuned significantly via strongly composition (x)-dependent spin-orbit proximity effect without varying the bulk SOC and the electronegativity of the Au1-xPtx layer. We also find that {tau}DL in the Au1-xPtx/Co bilayers varies distinctly from the interfacial SOC as a function of x, indicating no important {tau}DL contribution from the interfacial Rashba-Edelstein effect.
We investigate an interfacial spin-transfer torque and $beta$-term torque with alternating current (AC) parallel to a magnetic interface. We find that both torques are resonantly enhanced as the AC frequency approaches to the exchange splitting energ y. We show that this resonance allows us to estimate directly the interfacial exchange interaction strength from the domain wall motion. We also find that the $beta$-term includes an unconventional contribution which is proportional to the time derivative of the current and exists even in absence of any spin relaxation processes.
