We study a class of Little String Theories (LSTs) of A type, described by $N$ parallel M5-branes spread out on a circle and which in the low energy regime engineer supersymmetric gauge theories with $U(N)$ gauge group. The BPS states in this setting correspond to M2-branes stretched between the M5-branes. Generalising an observation made in arXiv:1706.04425, we provide evidence that the BPS counting functions of special subsectors of the latter exhibit a Hecke structure in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit, i.e. the different orders in an instanton expansion of the supersymmetric gauge theory are related through the action of Hecke operators. We extract $N$ distinct such reduced BPS counting functions from the full free energy of the LST with the help of contour integrals with respect to the gauge parameters of the $U(N)$ gauge group. Physically, the states captured by these functions correspond to configurations where the same number of M2-branes is stretched between some of these neighbouring M5-branes, while the remaining M5-branes are collapsed on top of each other and a particular singular contribution is extracted. The Hecke structures suggest that these BPS states form the spectra of symmetric orbifold CFTs. We furthermore show that to leading instanton order (in the NS-limit) the reduced BPS counting functions factorise into simpler building blocks. These building blocks are the expansion coefficients of the free energy for $N=1$ and the expansion of a particular function, which governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane with single M2-branes ending on it on either side. To higher orders in the instanton expansion, we observe new elements appearing in this decomposition, whose coefficients are related through a holomorphic anomaly equation.

We analyse the symmetries of a class of A-type little string theories that are engineered by $N$ parallel M5-branes with M2-branes stretched between them. This paper deals with the so-called reduced free energy, which only receives contributions from the subset of the BPS states that carry the same charges under all the Cartan generators of the underlying gauge algebra. We argue (and check explicitly in a number of examples) that the former is invariant under the paramodular group $Sigma_Nsubset Sp(4,mathbb{Q})$, which gets extended to a subgroup of $Sp(4,mathbb{R})$ in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili-limit. This extension agrees with the observation made in arXiv:1706.04425 that these BPS states form a symmetric orbifold CFT. Furthermore, we argue that $Sigma_N$ (along with other symmetries) places strong constraints on the BPS counting function that governs the intersection between the M5- and M2-branes.

We analyse topological orbifold conformal field theories on the symmetric product of a complex surface M. By exploiting the mathematics literature we show that a canonical quotient of the operator ring has structure constants given by Hurwitz numbers . This proves a conjecture in the physics literature on extremal correlators. Moreover, it allows to leverage results on the combinatorics of the symmetric group to compute more structure constants explicitly. We recall that the full orbifold chiral ring is given by a symmetric orbifold Frobenius algebra. This construction enables the computation of topological genus zero and genus one correlators, and to prove the vanishing of higher genus contributions. The efficient description of all topological correlators sets the stage for a proof of a topological AdS/CFT correspondence. Indeed, we propose a concrete mathematical incarnation of the proof, relating Gromow-Witten theory in the bulk to the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme on the boundary.
Using Z3 asymmetric orbifolds in heterotic string theory, we construct N=1 SUSY three-generation models with the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C times SU(2)_L times U(1)_Y and the left-right symmetric group SU(3)_C times SU(2)_L times SU(2)_R time s U(1)_{B-L}. One of the models possesses a gauge flavor symmetry for the Z3 twisted matter.

We study the structure of the non-perturbative free energy of a one-parameter class of little string theories (LSTs) of A-type in the so-called unrefined limit. These theories are engineered by $N$ M5-branes probing a transverse flat space. By analys ing a number of examples, we observe a pattern which suggests to write the free energy in a fashion that resembles a decomposition into higher-point functions which can be presented in a graphical way reminiscent of sums of (effective) Feynman diagrams: to leading order in the instanton parameter of the LST, the $N$ external states are given either by the fundamental building blocks of the theory with $N=1$, or the function that governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane coupling to one M2-brane on either side. These states are connected via an effective coupling function which encodes the details of the gauge algebra of the LST and which in its simplest (non-trivial) form is captured by the scalar Greens function on the torus. More complicated incarnations of this function show certain similarities with so-called modular graph functions, which have appeared in the study of Feynman amplitudes in string- and field theory. Finally, similar structures continue to exist at higher instanton orders, which, however, also contain contributions that can be understood as the action of (Hecke) operators on the leading instanton result.

Following on from earlier work relating modules of meromorphic bosonic conformal field theories to states representing solutions of certain simple equations inside the theories, we show, in the context of orbifold theories, that the intertwiners betw een twisted sectors are unique and described explicitly in terms of the states corresponding to the relevant modules. No explicit knowledge of the structure of the twisted sectors is required. Further, we propose a general set of sufficiency conditions, illustrated in the context of a third order no-fixed-point twist of a lattice theory, for verifying consistency of arbitrary orbifold models in terms of the states representing the twisted sectors.
