We analyse the performance of a communication link assisted by an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) positioned in the far field of both the source and the destination. A direct link between the transmitting and receiving devices is assumed to exist. Perfect and imperfect phase adjustments at the IRS are considered. For the perfect phase configuration, we derive an approximate expression for the outage probability in closed form. For the imperfect phase configuration, we assume that each element of the IRS has a one-bit phase shifter (0{deg}, 180{deg}) and an expression for the outage probability is obtained in the form of an integral. Our formulation admits an exact asymptotic (high SNR) analysis, from which we obtain the diversity orders for systems with and without phase errors. We show these are N + 1 and (N + 3)/2, respectively. Numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis and verify that the reported results are more accurate than methods based on the central limit theorem (CLT).

In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for solving the optimisation problem of the networks sum-rate in device-to-device (D2D) communications supported by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). The IRS is deployed to mitigate the interference and enhance the signal between the D2D transmitter and the associated D2D receiver. Our objective is to jointly optimise the transmit power at the D2D transmitter and the phase shift matrix at the IRS to maximise the network sum-rate. We formulate a Markov decision process and then propose the proximal policy optimisation for solving the maximisation game. Simulation results show impressive performance in terms of the achievable rate and processing time.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is one of the promising technology contributing to the next generation smart radio environment. The application scenarios include massive connectivity support, signal enhancement, and security protection. One crucial difficulty of analyzing the RIS-assisted networks is that the channel performance is sensitive to the change of user receiving direction. This paper tackles the problem by categorizing the RIS illuminated space into four categories: perfect alignment, coherent alignment, random alignment, and destructive alignment. These four categories cover all the possible phase alignment conditions that a user could experience within the overall $2$ pi solid angle of RIS-illuminated space. We perform analysis for each of these categories, deriving analytical expressions for the outage probability and diversity order. Simulation results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed analytical results.

In this letter, we propose to employ reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for enhancing the D2D underlaying system performance. We study the joint power control, receive beamforming, and passive beamforming for RIS assisted D2D underlaying cell ular communication systems, which is formulated as a sum rate maximization problem. To address this issue, we develop a block coordinate descent method where uplink power, receive beamformer and refection phase shifts are alternatively optimized. Then, we provide the closed-form solutions for both uplink power and receive beamformer. We further propose a quadratic transform based semi-definite relaxation algorithm to optimize the RIS phase shifts, where the original passive beamforming problem is translated into a separable quadratically constrained quadratic problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RIS assisted design significantly improves the sum-rate performance.
Intelligent reflective surface (IRS) technology is emerging as a promising performance enhancement technique for next-generation wireless networks. Hence, we investigate the physical layer security of the downlink in IRS-aided non-orthogonal multiple access networks in the presence of an eavesdropper, where an IRS is deployed for enhancing the quality by assisting the cell-edge user to communicate with the base station. To characterize the networks performance, the expected value of the new channel statistics is derived for the reflected links in the case of Nakagami-m fading. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed network is evaluated both in terms of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the average secrecy capacity (ASC). The closed-form expressions of the SOP and the ASC are derived. We also study the impact of various network parameters on the overall performance of the network considered. To obtain further insights, the secrecy diversity orders and the high signal-to-noise ratio slopes are obtained. We finally show that: 1) the expectation of the channel gain in the reflected links is determined both by the number of IRSs and by the Nakagami-m fading parameters; 2) The SOP of both receiver 1 and receiver 2 becomes unity, when the number of IRSs is sufficiently high; 3) The secrecy diversity orders are affected both by the number of IRSs and by the Nakagami-m fading parameters, whereas the high-SNR slopes are not affected by these parameters. Our Monte-Carlo simulations perfectly demonstrate the analytical results.

In a practical massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system, the number of antennas at a base station (BS) is constrained by the space and cost factors, which limits the throughput gain promised by theoretical analysis. This paper thus studie s the feasibility of adopting the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to further improve the beamforming gain of the uplink communications in a massive MIMO system. Under such a novel system, the central question lies in whether the IRS is able to enhance the network throughput as expected, if the channel estimation overhead is taken into account. In this paper, we first show that the favorable propagation property for the conventional massive MIMO system without IRS, i.e., the channels of arbitrary two users are orthogonal, no longer holds for the IRS-assisted massive MIMO system, due to its special channel property that each IRS element reflects the signals from all the users to the BS via the same channel. As a result, the maximal-ratio combining (MRC) receive beamforming strategy leads to strong inter-user interference and thus even lower user rates than those of the massive MIMO system without IRS. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel strategy for zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming design at the BS and reflection coefficients design at the IRS to efficiently null the inter-user interference. Under our proposed strategy, it is rigorously shown that even if the channel estimation overhead is considered, the IRS-assisted massive MIMO system can always achieve higher throughput compared to its counterpart without IRS, despite the fact that the favorable propagation property no longer holds.
