Although character-based models using lexicon have achieved promising results for Chinese named entity recognition (NER) task, some lexical words would introduce erroneous information due to wrongly matched words. Existing researches proposed many strategies to integrate lexicon knowledge. However, they performed with simple first-order lexicon knowledge, which provided insufficient word information and still faced the challenge of matched word boundary conflicts; or explored the lexicon knowledge with graph where higher-order information introducing negative words may disturb the identification. To alleviate the above limitations, we present new insight into second-order lexicon knowledge (SLK) of each character in the sentence to provide more lexical word information including semantic and word boundary features. Based on these, we propose a SLK-based model with a novel strategy to integrate the above lexicon knowledge. The proposed model can exploit more discernible lexical words information with the help of global context. Experimental results on three public datasets demonstrate the validity of SLK. The proposed model achieves more excellent performance than the state-of-the-art comparison methods.

Recently, many works have tried to augment the performance of Chinese named entity recognition (NER) using word lexicons. As a representative, Lattice-LSTM (Zhang and Yang, 2018) has achieved new benchmark results on several public Chinese NER datase ts. However, Lattice-LSTM has a complex model architecture. This limits its application in many industrial areas where real-time NER responses are needed. In this work, we propose a simple but effective method for incorporating the word lexicon into the character representations. This method avoids designing a complicated sequence modeling architecture, and for any neural NER model, it requires only subtle adjustment of the character representation layer to introduce the lexicon information. Experimental studies on four benchmark Chinese NER datasets show that our method achieves an inference speed up to 6.15 times faster than those of state-ofthe-art methods, along with a better performance. The experimental results also show that the proposed method can be easily incorporated with pre-trained models like BERT.

Pre-trained language models lead Named Entity Recognition (NER) into a new era, while some more knowledge is needed to improve their performance in specific problems. In Chinese NER, character substitution is a complicated linguistic phenomenon. Some Chinese characters are quite similar for sharing the same components or having similar pronunciations. People replace characters in a named entity with similar characters to generate a new collocation but referring to the same object. It becomes even more common in the Internet age and is often used to avoid Internet censorship or just for fun. Such character substitution is not friendly to those pre-trained language models because the new collocations are occasional. As a result, it always leads to unrecognizable or recognition errors in the NER task. In this paper, we propose a new method, Multi-Feature Fusion Embedding for Chinese Named Entity Recognition (MFE-NER), to strengthen the language pattern of Chinese and handle the character substitution problem in Chinese Named Entity Recognition. MFE fuses semantic, glyph, and phonetic features together. In the glyph domain, we disassemble Chinese characters into components to denote structure features so that characters with similar structures can have close embedding space representation. Meanwhile, an improved phonetic system is also proposed in our work, making it reasonable to calculate phonetic similarity among Chinese characters. Experiments demonstrate that our method improves the overall performance of Chinese NER and especially performs well in informal language environments.
While named entity recognition (NER) is a key task in natural language processing, most approaches only target flat entities, ignoring nested structures which are common in many scenarios. Most existing nested NER methods traverse all sub-sequences w hich is both expensive and inefficient, and also dont well consider boundary knowledge which is significant for nested entities. In this paper, we propose a joint entity mention detection and typing model via prior boundary knowledge (BoningKnife) to better handle nested NER extraction and recognition tasks. BoningKnife consists of two modules, MentionTagger and TypeClassifier. MentionTagger better leverages boundary knowledge beyond just entity start/end to improve the handling of nesting levels and longer spans, while generating high quality mention candidates. TypeClassifier utilizes a two-level attention mechanism to decouple different nested level representations and better distinguish entity types. We jointly train both modules sharing a common representation and a new dual-info attention layer, which leads to improved representation focus on entity-related information. Experiments over different datasets show that our approach outperforms previous state of the art methods and achieves 86.41, 85.46, and 94.2 F1 scores on ACE2004, ACE2005, and NNE, respectively.

Recent studies in deep learning have shown significant progress in named entity recognition (NER). Most existing works assume clean data annotation, yet a fundamental challenge in real-world scenarios is the large amount of noise from a variety of so urces (e.g., pseudo, weak, or distant annotations). This work studies NER under a noisy labeled setting with calibrated confidence estimation. Based on empirical observations of different training dynamics of noisy and clean labels, we propose strategies for estimating confidence scores based on local and global independence assumptions. We partially marginalize out labels of low confidence with a CRF model. We further propose a calibration method for confidence scores based on the structure of entity labels. We integrate our approach into a self-training framework for boosting performance. Experiments in general noisy settings with four languages and distantly labeled settings demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Named Entity Recognition (NER) is the task of identifying spans that represent entities in sentences. Whether the entity spans are nested or discontinuous, the NER task can be categorized into the flat NER, nested NER, and discontinuous NER subtasks. These subtasks have been mainly solved by the token-level sequence labelling or span-level classification. However, these solutions can hardly tackle the three kinds of NER subtasks concurrently. To that end, we propose to formulate the NER subtasks as an entity span sequence generation task, which can be solved by a unified sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) framework. Based on our unified framework, we can leverage the pre-trained Seq2Seq model to solve all three kinds of NER subtasks without the special design of the tagging schema or ways to enumerate spans. We exploit three types of entity representations to linearize entities into a sequence. Our proposed framework is easy-to-implement and achieves state-of-the-art (SoTA) or near SoTA performance on eight English NER datasets, including two flat NER datasets, three nested NER datasets, and three discontinuous NER datasets.
