We employ mean-field approximation to investigate the interplay between the nontrivial band topology and the formation of excitonic insulator (EI) in a one-dimensional chain of atomic $s-p$ orbitals in the presence of repulsive inter-orbital Coulomb interaction. We find that our model, in a non-interacting regime, admits topological and trivial insulator phases, whereas, in strong Coulomb interaction limit, the chiral symmetry is broken and the system undergoes a topological-excitonic insulator phase transition. The latter phase transition stems from an orbital pseudomagnetization and band inversion around $k=0$. Our findings show that contrary to the topological insulator phase, electron-hole bound states do not form exciton condensate in the trivial band insulator phase due to lack of band inversion. Interestingly, the EI phase in low $s-p$ hybridization limit hosts a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)/Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. Irradiated by a pump pulse, our findings reveal that the oscillations of exciton states strongly depend on the frequency of the laser pulse. We further explore the signatures of dynamics of the exciton condensate in optical measurements.

We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic insulating state. Its experimental consequences, such as quantized tunneling conductance in the tunneling measurement, are also discussed.
Topological insulators, with metallic boundary states protected against time-reversal-invariant perturbations, are a promising avenue for realizing exotic quantum states of matter including various excitations of collective modes predicted in particl e physics, such as Majorana fermions and axions. According to theoretical predictions, a topological insulating state can emerge from not only a weakly interacting system with strong spin-orbit coupling, but also in insulators driven by strong electron correlations. The Kondo insulator compound SmB6 is an ideal candidate for realizing this exotic state of matter, with hybridization between itinerant conduction electrons and localized $f$-electrons driving an insulating gap and metallic surface states at low temperatures. Here we exploit the existence of surface ferromagnetism in SmB6 to investigate the topological nature of metallic surface states by studying magnetotransport properties at very low temperatures. We find evidence of one-dimensional surface transport with a quantized conductance value of $e^2/h$ originating from the chiral edge channels of ferromagnetic domain walls, providing strong evidence that topologically non-trivial surface states exist in SmB6.
We theoretically investigate topological properties of the one-dimensional superlattice anyon-Hubbard model, which can be mapped to a superlattice bose-Hubbard model with an occupation-dependent phase factor by fractional Jordan-Wigner transformation . The topological anyon-Mott insulator is identified by topological invariant and edge modes using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. When only the statistical angle is varied and all other parameters are fixed, a statistically induced topological phase transition can be realized, which provides new insights into the topological phase transitions. Whats more, we give an explanation of the statistically induced topological phase transition. The topological anyon-Mott phases can also appear in a variety of superlattice anyon-Hubbard models.

We study the photo-induced dynamics of the excitonic insulator in the two-band Hubbard model on the Penrose tiling by means of the time-dependent real-space mean-field approximation. We show that, with a single-cycle electric-field pulse, the bulk (s patially averaged) excitonic order parameter decreases in the BCS regime, while it increases in the BEC regime. To clarify the dynamics peculiar to the Penrose tiling, we examine the coordination number dependence of observables and analyze the perpendicular space. In the BEC regime, characteristic oscillations of the electron number at each site are induced by the pulse, which are not observed in normal crystals. On the other hand, the dynamics in the BCS regime is characterized by drastic change in the spatial pattern of the excitonic order parameter.
The excitonic insulator is an intriguing correlated electron phase formed of condensed excitons. A promising candidate is the small band gap semiconductor Ta2NiSe5. Here we investigate the quasiparticle and coherent phonon dynamics in Ta2NiSe5 in a t ime resolved pump probe experiment. Using the models originally developed by Kabanov et al. for superconductors, we show that the materials intrinsic gap can be described as almost temperature independent for temperatures up to about 250 K to 275 K. This behavior supports the existence of the excitonic insulator state in Ta2NiSe5. The onset of an additional temperature dependent component to the gap above these temperatures suggests that the material is located in the BEC-BCS crossover regime. Furthermore, we show that this state is very stable against strong photoexcitation, which reveals that the free charge carriers are unable to effectively screen the attractive Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes, likely due to the quasi one-dimensional structure of Ta2NiSe5.
