Full-duplex (FD) transmission has already been regarded and developed as a promising method to improve the utilization efficiency of the limited spectrum resource, as transmitting and receiving are allowed to simultaneously occur on the same frequency band. Nowadays, benefiting from the recent development of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), some unique electromagnetic (EM) functionalities, like wavefront shaping, focusing, anomalous reflection, absorption, frequency shifting, and nonreciprocity can be realized by soft-controlled elements at the IRS, showing the capability of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment with no hardware cost and nearly zero energy consumption. To jointly exploit the virtues of both FD transmission and IRS, in this article we first introduce several EM functionalities of IRS that are profitable for FD transmission; then, some designs of FD-enabled IRS systems are proposed and discussed, followed by numerical results to demonstrate the obtained benefits. Finally, the challenges and open problems of realizing FD-enabled IRS systems are outlined and elaborated upon.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient technology that can customize and program the physical propagation environment by reflecting radio waves in preferred directions. However, the purely passive refl ection of RISs not only limits the end-to-end channel beamforming gains, but also hinders the acquisition of accurate channel state information for the phase control at RISs. In this paper, we provide an overview of a hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS) architecture, in which only a few elements are active and connected to power amplifiers and radio frequency chains. The introduction of a small number of active elements enables a remarkable system performance improvement which can also compensate for losses due to hardware impairments such as the deployment of limited-resolution phase shifters. Particularly, the active processing facilitates efficient channel estimation and localization at HR-RISs. We present two practical architectures for HR-RISs, namely, fixed and dynamic HR-RISs, and discuss their applications to beamforming, channel estimation, and localization. The benefits, key challenges, and future research directions for HR-RIS-aided communications are also highlighted. Numerical results for an exemplary deployment scenario show that HR-RISs with only four active elements can attain up to 42.8 percent and 41.8 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, respectively, compared with conventional RISs.
This paper investigates the passive beamforming and deployment design for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided full-duplex (FD) wireless system, where an FD access point (AP) communicates with an uplink (UL) user and a downlink (DL) user sim ultaneously over the same time-frequency dimension with the help of IRS. Under this setup, we consider three deployment cases: 1) two distributed IRSs placed near the UL user and DL user, respectively; 2) one centralized IRS placed near the DL user; 3) one centralized IRS placed near the UL user. In each case, we aim to minimize the weighted sum transmit power consumption of the AP and UL user by jointly optimizing their transmit power and the passive reflection coefficients at the IRS (or IRSs), subject to the UL and DL users rate constraints and the uni-modulus constraints on the IRS reflection coefficients. First, we analyze the minimum transmit power required in the IRS-aided FD system under each deployment scheme, and compare it with that of the corresponding half-duplex (HD) system. We show that the FD system outperforms its HD counterpart for all IRS deployment schemes, while the distributed deployment further outperforms the other two centralized deployment schemes. Next, we transform the challenging power minimization problem into an equivalent but more tractable form and propose an efficient algorithm to solve it based on the block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Finally, numerical results are presented to validate our analysis as well as the efficacy of the proposed passive beamforming design.
Services computing can offer a high-level abstraction to support diverse applications via encapsulating various computing infrastructures. Though services computing has greatly boosted the productivity of developers, it is faced with three main chall enges: privacy and security risks, information silo, and pricing mechanisms and incentives. The recent advances of blockchain bring opportunities to address the challenges of services computing due to its build-in encryption as well as digital signature schemes, decentralization feature, and intrinsic incentive mechanisms. In this paper, we present a survey to investigate the integration of blockchain with services computing. The integration of blockchain with services computing mainly exhibits merits in two aspects: i) blockchain can potentially address key challenges of services computing and ii) services computing can also promote blockchain development. In particular, we categorize the current literature of services computing based on blockchain into five types: services creation, services discovery, services recommendation, services composition, and services arbitration. Moreover, we generalize Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) architecture and summarize the representative BaaS platforms. In addition, we also outline open issues of blockchain-based services computing and BaaS.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have been proposed as a revolutionary technology owing to its capability of adaptively reconfiguring the propagation environment in a cost-effective and hardware-efficient fashion. While the application of IRS as a passive reflector to enhance the performance of wireless communications has been widely investigated in the literature, using IRS as a passive transmitter recently is emerging as a new concept and attracting steadily growing interest. In this paper, we propose two novel IRS-based passive information transmission systems using advanced symbol-level precoding. One is a standalone passive information transmission system, where the IRS operates as a passive transmitter serving multiple receivers by adjusting its elements to reflect unmodulated carrier signals. The other is a joint passive reflection and information transmission system, where the IRS not only enhances transmissions for multiple primary information receivers (PIRs) by passive reflection, but also simultaneously delivers additional information to a secondary information receiver (SIR) by embedding its information into the primary signals at the symbol level. Two typical optimization problems, i.e., power minimization and quality-of-service (QoS) balancing, are investigated for the proposed IRS-based passive information transmission systems. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of IRS-based passive information transmission and the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, as compared to other benchmark schemes.
A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a metamaterial that can be integrated into walls and influence the propagation of electromagnetic waves. This, typically passive radio frequency (RF) technology is emerging for indoor and outdoor use with the potential of making wireless communications more reliable in increasingly challenging radio environments. This paper goes one step further and introduces mobile RIS, specifically, RIS carried by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to support cellular communications networks and services of the future. We elaborate on several use cases, challenges, and future research opportunities for designing and optimizing wireless systems at low cost and with low energy footprint.
