The (pseudo-)spin degrees of freedom greatly enriches the physics of cold atoms. This is particularly so for systems with high spins (i.e., spin quantum number larger than 1/2). For example, one can construct not only the rank-1 spin vector, but also the rank-2 spin tensor in high spin systems. Here we propose a simple scheme to couple the spin tensor and the center-of-mass orbital angular momentum in a spin-1 cold atom system, and show that this leads to a new quantum phase of the matter: the spin-nematic vortex state that features vorticity in an SU(2) spin-nematic tensor subspace. Under proper conditions, such states are characterized by quantized topological numbers. Our work opens up new avenues of research in topological quantum matter with high spins.

We find a novel topological defect in a spin-nematic superfluid theoretically. A quantized vortex spontaneously breaks its axisymmetry, leading to an elliptic vortex in nematic-spin Bose-Einstein condensates with small positive quadratic Zeeman effec t. The new vortex is considered the Joukowski transform of a conventional vortex. Its oblateness grows when the Zeeman length exceeds the spin healing length. This structure is sustained by balancing the hydrodynamic potential and the elasticity of a soliton connecting two spin spots, which are observable by in situ magnetization imaging. The theoretical analysis clearly defines the difference between half quantum vortices of the polar and antiferromagnetic phases in spin-1 condensates.
A spin-1 condensate with antiferromagnetic interactions supports nematic spin vortices in the easy-plane polar phase. These vortices have a $2pi$ winding of the nematic director, with a core structure that depends on the quadratic Zeeman energy. We c haracterize the properties of the nematic spin vortex in a uniform quasi-two-dimensional system. We also obtain the vortex excitation spectrum and use it to quantify its stability against dissociating into two half-quantum vortices, finding a parameter regime where the nematic spin vortex is dynamically stable. These results are supported by full dynamical simulations.
We suggest a method for engineering a quantum walk, with cold atoms as walkers, which presents topologically non-trivial properties. We derive the phase diagram, and show that we are able to produce a boundary between topologically distinct phases us ing the finite beam width of the applied lasers. A topologically protected bound state can then be observed, which is pinned to the interface and is robust to perturbations. We show that it is possible to identify this bound state by averaging over spin sensitive measures of the atoms position, based on the spin distribution that these states display. Interestingly, there exists a parameter regime in which our system maps on to the Creutz ladder.
Time evolution of spin-orbit-coupled cold atoms in an optical lattice is studied, with a two-band energy spectrum having two avoided crossings. A force is applied such that the atoms experience two consecutive Landau-Zener tunnelings while transversi ng the avoided crossings. Stuckelberg interference arises from the phase accumulated during the adiabatic evolution between the two tunnelings. This phase is gauge field-dependent and thus provides new opportunities to measure the synthetic gauge field, which is verified via calculation of spin transition probabilities after a double passage process. Time-dependent and time-averaged spin probabilities are derived, in which resonances are found. We also demonstrate chiral Bloch oscillation and rich spin-momentum locking behavior in this system.

In this article we proposed a scheme to generating steady topologically non-trivial artificial spin texture in cold atom systems. An example of generating a texture of charge one skyrmion with Laguerre-Gaussian beam was given. It provides a scheme fo r studying skyrmion excitations of quantum Hall ferromagnetism in cold atom systems.
