Terahertz spin waves could be generated on-demand via all-optical manipulation of magnetization by femtosecond laser pulse. Here, we present an energy balance model, which explains the energy transfer rates from laser pulse to electron bath coupled with phonon, spin, and magnetization of five different magnetic metallic thin films: Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Gadolinium and Ni$_{2}$MnSn Heusler alloy. Two types of transient magnetization dynamics emerge in metallic magnetic thin films based on their Curie temperatures (T$_{C}$): type I (Fe, Co, and Ni with T$_{C}$ > room temperature, RT) and type II films (Gd and Ni$_{2}$MnSn with T$_{C}$ $approx$ RT). We study the effect of laser fluence and pulse width for single Gaussian laser pulses and the effect of metal film thickness on magnetization dynamics. Spectral dynamics show that broadband spin waves up to 24 THz could be generated by all-optical manipulation of magnetization in these nanofilms.

All-optical pump-probe detection of magnetization precession has been performed for ferromagnetic EuO thin films at 10 K. We demonstrate that the circularly-polarized light can be used to control the magnetization precession on an ultrafast time scal e. This takes place within the 100 fs duration of a single laser pulse, through combined contribution from two nonthermal photomagnetic effects, i.e., enhancement of the magnetization and an inverse Faraday effect. From the magnetic field dependences of the frequency and the Gilbert damping parameter, the intrinsic Gilbert damping coefficient is evaluated to be {alpha} approx 3times10^-3.
Identifying materials with an efficient spin-to-charge conversion is crucial for future spintronic applications. The spin Hall effect is a central mechanism as it allows for the interconversion of spin and charge currents. Spintronic material researc h aims at maximizing its efficiency, quantified by the spin Hall angle $Theta_{textrm{SH}}$ and the spin-current relaxation length $lambda_{textrm{rel}}$. We develop an all-optical method with large sample throughput that allows us to extract $Theta_{textrm{SH}}$ and $lambda_{textrm{rel}}$. Employing terahertz spectroscopy, we characterize magnetic metallic heterostructures involving Pt, W and Cu$_{80}$Ir$_{20}$ in terms of their optical and spintronic properties. We furthermore find indications that the interface plays a minor role for the spin-current transmission. Our analytical model is validated by the good agreement with literature DC values. These findings establish terahertz emission spectroscopy as a reliable tool complementing the spintronics workbench.

We use scanning optical magnetometry to study the broadband frequency spectra of spontaneous magnetization fluctuations, or magnetization noise, in an archetypal ferromagnetic film that can be smoothly tuned through a spin reorientation transition (S RT). The SRT is achieved by laterally varying the magnetic anisotropy across an ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt trilayer, from the perpendicular to in-plane direction, via graded Ar$^+$ irradiation. In regions exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy, the power spectrum of the magnetization noise, $S( u)$, exhibits a remarkably robust $ u^{-3/2}$ power law over frequencies $ u$ from 1~kHz to 1~MHz. As the SRT region is traversed, however, $S( u)$ spectra develop a steadily-increasing critical frequency, $ u_0$, below which the noise power is spectrally flat, indicating an evolving low-frequency cutoff for magnetization fluctuations. The magnetization noise depends strongly on applied in- and out-of-plane magnetic fields, revealing local anisotropies and also a field-induced emergence of fluctuations in otherwise stable ferromagnetic films. Finally, we demonstrate that higher-order correlators can be computed from the noise. These results highlight broadband spectroscopy of thermodynamic fluctuations as a powerful tool to characterize the interplay between thermal and magnetic energy scales, and as a means of characterizing phase transitions in ferromagnets.
We report on the direct observation of spin wave and elastic wave emission from magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic thin films. Driven by alternating homogeneous magnetic fields the magnetic domain walls act as coherent magnetisation wave sources. Directional and low damped elastic waves below and above the ferromagnetic resonance are excited. The wave vector of the magnetoelastically induced acoustic shear waves is linearly tuned by varying the excitation frequency. Domain wall emitted magnetostatic surface spin waves occur at higher frequencies, which characteristics are confirmed by micromagnetic simulations. The distinct modes of magnetisation wave excitation from micromagnetic objects are a general physical phenomenon relevant for dynamic magnetisation processes in structured magnetic films. Magnetic domain walls can act as reconfigurable antennas for spin wave and elastic wave generation with control of the wave orientation.

Flexible control of magnetization switching by electrical manners is crucial for applications of spin-orbitronics. Besides of a switching current that is parallel to an applied field, a bias current that is normal to the switching current is introduc ed to tune the magnitude of effective damping-like and field-like torques and further to electrically control magnetization switching. Symmetrical and asymmetrical control over the critical switching current by the bias current with opposite polarities is both realized in Pt/Co/MgO and $alpha$-Ta/CoFeB/MgO systems, respectively. This research not only identifies the influences of field-like and damping-like torques on switching process but also demonstrates an electrical method to control it.
