The discovery of 2-dimensional (2D) materials, such as CrI3, that retain magnetic ordering at monolayer thickness has resulted in a surge of research in 2D magnetism from both pure and applied perspectives. Here, we report a magneto-Raman spectroscopy study on multilayered CrI3, focusing on two new features in the spectra which appear at temperatures below the magnetic ordering temperature and were previously assigned to high frequency magnons. We observe a striking evolution of the Raman spectra with increasing magnetic field in which clear, sudden changes in intensities of the modes are attributed to the interlayer ordering changing from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic at a critical magnetic field. Our work highlights the sensitivity of the Raman modes to weak interlayer spin ordering in CrI3. In addition, we theoretically examine potential origins for the new modes, which we deduce are unlikely single magnons.

We review the behavior of the entropy per particle in various two-dimensional electronic systems. The entropy per particle is an important characteristic of any many body system that tells how the entropy of the ensemble of electrons changes if one a dds one more electron. Recently, it has been demonstrated how the entropy per particle of a two-dimensional electron gas can be extracted from the recharging current dynamics in a planar capacitor geometry. These experiments pave the way to the systematic studies of entropy in various crystal systems including novel two-dimensional crystals such as gapped graphene, germanene and silicene. Theoretically, the entropy per particle is linked to the temperature derivative of the chemical potential of the electron gas by the Maxwell relation. Using this relation, we calculate the entropy per particle in the vicinity of topological transitions in various two-dimensional electronic systems. We show that the entropy experiences quantized steps at the points of Lifshitz transitions in a two-dimensional electronic gas with a parabolic energy spectrum. In contrast, in doubled-gapped Dirac materials, the entropy per particles demonstrates characteristic spikes once the chemical potential passes through the band edges. The transition from a topological to trivial insulator phase in germanene is manifested by the disappearance of a strong zero-energy resonance in the entropy per particle dependence on the chemical potential. We conclude that studies of the entropy per particle shed light on multiple otherwise hidden peculiarities of the electronic band structure of novel two-dimensional crystals.
We investigate the full counting statistics (FCS) of spin-conserving and spin-flip charge transitions in Pauli-spin blockade regime of a GaAs double quantum dot. A theoretical model is proposed to evaluate all spin-conserving and spin-flip tunnel rat es, and to demonstrate the fundamental relation between FCS and waiting time distribution. We observe the remarkable features of parity effect and a tail structure in the constructed FCS, which do not appear in the Poisson distribution, and are originated from spin degeneracy and coexistence of slow and fast transitions, respectively. This study is potentially useful for elucidating the spin-related and other complex transition dynamics in quantum systems.

A theory of electron spin-flip Raman scattering (SFRS) is presented that describes the Raman spectral signals shifted by both single and twice the electron Zeeman energy under nearly resonant excitation of the heavy hole excitons in semiconductor nan oplatelets. We analyze the spin structure of photoexcited intermediate states, derive compound matrix elements of the spin-flip scattering and obtain polarization properties of the one- and two-electron SFRS common for all the intermediate states. We show that, in the resonant scattering process under consideration, the complexes exciton plus localized resident electrons play the role of main intermediate states rather than tightly bound trion states. It is demonstrated that, in addition to the direct photoexcitation (and similar photorecombination) channel, there is another indirect channel contributing to the SFRS process. In the indirect channel, the photohole forms the exciton state with the resident electron removed from the localization site while the photoelectron becomes localized on this site. The theoretical results are compared with recent experimental findings for ensembles of CdSe nanoplatelets.
CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets are studied by spin-flip Raman scattering in magnetic fields up to 5 T. We find pronounced Raman lines shifted from the excitation laser energy by an electron Zeeman splitting. Their polarization selection rules correspon d to those expected for scattering mediated by excitons interacting with resident electrons. Surprisingly, Raman signals shifted by twice the electron Zeeman splitting are also observed. The theoretical analysis and experimental dependencies show that the mechanism responsible for the double flip involves two resident electrons interacting with a photoexcited exciton. Effects related to various orientations of the nanoplatelets in the ensemble and different orientations of the magnetic field are analyzed.

High-resolution spectral hole burning (SHB) in coherent nondegenerate differential transmission spectroscopy discloses spin-trion dynamics in an ensemble of negatively charged quantum dots. In the Voigt geometry, stimulated Raman spin coherence gives rise to Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands on top of the trion spectral hole. The prominent feature of an extremely narrow spike at zero detuning arises from spin population pulsation dynamics. These SHB features confirm coherent electron spin dynamics in charged dots, and the linewidths reveal spin spectral diffusion processes.
