We characterized the effects of telluric absorption lines on the radial velocity (RV) precision of stellar spectra taken through an iodine cell. To isolate the effects induced by telluric contamination from other stellar, instrumental, or numerical systematic RV noise, we extracted RVs from simulated iodine calibrated spectra of three RV standard stars regularly observed by Keck/HIRES. We add in water absorption lines according to measured precipitable water vapor (PWV) contents over a one-year period. We concluded that telluric contamination introduces additional RV noise and spurious periodic signals on the level of 10-20 cm/s, consistent with similar previous studies. Our findings show that forward modeling the telluric lines effectively recovers the RV precision and accuracy, with no prior knowledge of the PWV needed. Such a recovery is less effective when the water absorption lines are relatively deep in the stellar template used in the forward modeling. Overall, telluric contamination plays an insignificant role for typical iodine-calibrated RV programs aiming at ~1-2 m/s, but we recommend adding modeling of telluric lines and taking stellar template observations on nights with low humidity for programs aiming to achieve sub-m/s precision.

High fidelity iodine spectra provide the wavelength and instrument calibration needed to extract precise radial velocities (RVs) from stellar spectral observations taken through iodine cells. Such iodine spectra are usually taken by a Fourier Transfo rm Spectrometer (FTS). In this work, we investigated the reason behind the discrepancy between two FTS spectra of the iodine cell used for precise RV work with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. We concluded that the discrepancy between the two HRS FTS spectra was due to temperature changes of the iodine cell. Our work demonstrated that the ultra-high resolution spectra taken by the TS12 arm of the Tull Spectrograph One at McDonald Observatory are of similar quality to the FTS spectra and thus can be used to validate the FTS spectra. Using the software IodineSpec5, which computes the iodine absorption lines at different temperatures, we concluded that the HET/HRS cell was most likely not at its nominal operating temperature of 70 degree Celsius during its FTS scan at NIST or at the TS12 measurement. We found that extremely high resolution echelle spectra (R>200,000) can validate and diagnose deficiencies in FTS spectra. We also recommend best practices for temperature control and nightly calibration of iodine cells.
We report 1212 radial-velocity (RV) measurements obtained in the years 2009-2013 using an iodine cell for the spectroscopic binary nu Octantis (K1III/IV). This system (a_bin~2.6 au, P~1050 days) is conjectured to have a Jovian planet with a semi-majo r axis half that of the binary host. The extreme geometry only permits long-term stability if the planet is in a retrograde orbit. Whilst the reality of the planet (P~415 days) remains uncertain, other scenarios (stellar variability or apsidal motion caused by a yet unobserved third star) continue to appear substantially less credible based on CCF bisectors, line-depth ratios and many other independent details. If this evidence is validated but the planet is disproved, the claims of other planets using RVs will be seriously challenged. We also describe a significant revision to the previously published RVs and the full set of 1437 RVs now encompasses nearly 13 years. The sensitive orbital dynamics allow us to constrain the three-dimensional architecture with a broad prior probability distribution on the mutual inclination, which with posterior samples obtained from an N-body Markov chain Monte Carlo is found to be 158.4 +/- 1.2 deg. None of these samples are dynamically stable beyond 1 Myr. However, a grid search around the best-fitting solution finds a region that has many models stable for 10 Myr, and includes one model within 1-sigma that is stable for at least 100 Myr. The planets exceptional nature demands robust independent verification and makes the theoretical understanding of its formation a worthy challenge.
The Penn State Pathfinder is a prototype warm fiber-fed Echelle spectrograph with a Hawaii-1 NIR detector that has already demonstrated 7-10 m/s radial velocity precision on integrated sunlight. The Pathfinder testbed was initially setup for the Gemi ni PRVS design study to enable a systematic exploration of the challenges of achieving high radial velocity precision in the near-infrared, as well as to test possible solutions to these calibration challenges. The current version of the Pathfinder has an R3 echelle grating, and delivers a resolution of R~50,000 in the Y, J or H bands of the spectrum. We will discuss the on sky-performance of the Pathfinder during an engineering test run at the Hobby Eberly Telescope as well the results of velocity observations of M dwarfs. We will also discuss the unique calibration techniques we have explored, like Uranium-Neon hollow cathode lamps, notch filter, and modal noise mitigation to enable high precision radial velocity observation in the NIR. The Pathfinder is a prototype testbed precursor of a cooled high-resolution NIR spectrograph capable of high radial velocity precision and of finding low mass planets around mid-late M dwarfs.

SPIRou is a near-infrared (nIR) spectropolarimeter at the CFHT, covering the YJHK nIR spectral bands ($980-2350,mathrm{nm}$). We describe the development and current status of the SPIRou wavelength calibration in order to obtain precise radial veloci ties (RVs) in the nIR. We make use of a UNe hollow-cathode lamp and a Fabry-Perot etalon to calibrate the pixel-wavelength correspondence for SPIRou. Different methods are developed for identifying the hollow-cathode lines, for calibrating the wavelength dependence of the Fabry-Perot cavity width, and for combining the two calibrators. The hollow-cathode spectra alone do not provide a sufficiently accurate wavelength solution to meet the design requirements of an internal error of $mathrm{<0.45,m,s^{-1}}$, for an overall RV precision of $mathrm{1,m,s^{-1}}$. However, the combination with the Fabry-Perot spectra allows for significant improvements, leading to an internal error of $mathrm{sim 0.15,m,s^{-1}}$. We examine the inter-night stability, intra-night stability, and impact on the stellar RVs of the wavelength solution.
We report the discovery of a second planet orbiting the K giant star 7 CMa based on 166 high-precision radial velocities obtained with Lick, HARPS, UCLES and SONG. The periodogram analysis reveals two periodic signals of approximately 745 and 980 d, associated to planetary companions. A double-Keplerian orbital fit of the data reveals two Jupiter-like planets with minimum masses $m_bsin i sim 1.9 ,mathrm{M_{J}}$ and $m_csin i sim 0.9 ,mathrm{M_{J}}$, orbiting at semi-major axes of $a_b sim 1.75,mathrm{au}$ and $a_c sim 2.15,mathrm{au}$, respectively. Given the small orbital separation and the large minimum masses of the planets close encounters may occur within the time baseline of the observations, thus, a more accurate N-body dynamical modeling of the available data is performed. The dynamical best-fit solution leads to collision of the planets and we explore the long-term stable configuration of the system in a Bayesian framework, confirming that 13% of the posterior samples are stable for at least 10 Myr. The result from the stability analysis indicates that the two-planets are trapped in a low-eccentricity 4:3 mean-motion resonance. This is only the third discovered system to be inside a 4:3 resonance, making it very valuable for planet formation and orbital evolution models.
