We experimentally study the dynamics of active particles (APs) in a viscoelastic fluid under various geometrical constraints such as flat walls, spherical obstacles and cylindrical cavities. We observe that the main effect of the confined viscoelastic fluid is to induce an effective repulsion on the APs when moving close to a rigid surface, which depends on the incident angle, the surface curvature and the particle activity. Additionally, the geometrical confinement imposes an asymmetry to their movement, which leads to strong hydrodynamic torques, thus resulting in detention times on the wall surface orders of magnitude shorter than suggested by thermal diffusion. We show that such viscoelasticity-mediated interactions have striking consequences on the behavior of multi-AP systems strongly confined in a circular pore. In particular, these systems exhibit a transition from liquid-like behavior to a highly ordered state upon increasing their activity. A further increase in activity melts the order, thus leading to a re-entrant liquid-like behavior.

The locomotion of microorganisms and spermatozoa in complex viscoelastic fluids is of critical importance in many biological processes such as fertilization, infection, and biofilm formation. Depending on their propulsion mechanisms, microswimmers di splay various responses to a complex fluid environment: increasing or decreasing their swimming speed and efficiency, modifying their propulsion kinematics and swimming gaits, and experiencing different hydrodynamic interactions with their surroundings. In this article, we review the fundamental physics of locomotion of biological and synthetic microswimmers in complex viscoelastic fluids. Starting from a continuum framework, we describe the main theoretical approaches developed to model microswimming in viscoelastic fluids, which typically rely on asymptotically small dimensionless parameters. We then summarise recent progress on the mobility of single cells propelled by cilia, waving flagella and rotating helical flagella in unbounded viscoelastic fluids. We next briefly discuss the impact of other physical factors, including the micro-scale heterogeneity of complex biological fluids, the role of Brownian fluctuations of the microswimmers, the effect of polymer entanglement and the influence of shear-thinning viscosity. In particular, for solutions of long polymer chains whose sizes are comparable to the radius of flagella, continuum models cannot be used and instead Brownian Dynamics for the polymers can predict the swimming dynamics. Finally, we discuss the effect of viscoelasticity on the dynamics of microswimmers in the presence of surfaces or external flows and its impact on collective cellular behavior.
Despite their fundamentally non-equilibrium nature, the individual and collective behavior of active systems with polar propulsion and isotropic interactions (polar-isotropic active systems) are remarkably well captured by equilibrium mapping techniq ues. Here we examine two signatures of equilibrium systems -- the existence of a local free energy function and the independence of the coarse- grained behavior on the details of the microscopic dynamics -- in polar-isotropic active particles confined by hard walls of arbitrary geometry at the one-particle level. We find that boundaries that possess concave regions make the density profile strongly dynamics-dependent and give it a nonlocal dependence on the geometry of the confining box. This in turn constrains the scope of equilibrium mapping techniques in polar-isotropic active systems.
The effects of elasticity on the break-up of liquid threads in microfluidic cross-junctions is investigated using numerical simulations based on the lattice Boltzmann models (LBM). Working at small Capillary numbers, we investigate the effects of non -Newtonian phases in the transition from droplet formation at the cross-junction (DCJ) and droplet formation downstream of the cross-junction (DC) (Liu & Zhang, ${it Phys. Fluids.}$ ${bf 23}$, 082101 (2011)). Viscoelasticity is found to influence the break-up point of the threads, which moves closer to the cross-junction and stabilizes. This is attributed to an increase of the polymer feedback stress forming in the corner flows, where the side channels of the device meet the main channel.
Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and beating patterns of elas tic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which is actuated at one end, and an active filament with bending forces arising from internal motors distributed along its length. We describe how viscoelasticity modifies the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the filaments, and how these modified forces affect the beating patterns. We show how high viscosity of purely viscous or viscoelastic solutions can lead to the experimentally observed beating patterns of sperm flagella, in which motion is concentrated at the distal end of the flagella.
We derive an analytic expression for the mechanical pressure of a generic one-dimensional model of confined active Brownian particles (ABPs) that is valid for all values of Peclet number Pe and all confining scenarios. Our model reproduces the known scaling of bulk pressure with Pe^2 while in strong confinement pressure scales with Pe. Our analytic results are very well reproduced by simulations of ABPs in 2D. We use the pressure formula to calculate both the work performed by an active engine and its efficiency. In particular, efficiency is maximized for work cycles with finite period and not in the limit of infinitely slow cycles as in thermodynamic engines.
