We report a detailed magnetotransport study on single crystals of PrBi. The presence of $f$-electrons in this material raises the prospect of realizing a strongly correlated version of topological semimetals. PrBi shows a magnetic field induced metal insulator transition below $T sim 20$ K and a very large magnetoresistance ($approx 4.4 times 10^4~$) at low temperatures ($T= 2$ K). We have also probed the Fermi surface topology by de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillation measurements complimented with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the band structure and the Fermi surface. Angle dependence of the SdH oscillations have been carried out to probe the possible signature of surface Dirac fermions. We find three frequencies corresponding to one electron ($alpha$) and two hole ($beta$ and $gamma$) pockets in experiments, consistent with DFT calculations. The angular dependence of these frequencies is not consistent with a two dimensional Fermi surface suggesting that the transport is dominated by bulk bands. Although the transport properties of this material originate from the bulk bands, the high mobility and small effective mass are comparable to other compounds in this series proposed as topologically nontrivial.

Nodal semimetals are a unique platform to explore topological signatures of the unusual band structure that can manifest by accumulating a nontrivial phase in quantum oscillations. Here we report a study of the de Haasvan Alphen oscillations of the c andidate topological nodal line semimetal CaAgAs using torque measurements in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Our results are compared with calculations for a toroidal Fermi surface originating from the nodal ring. We find evidence of a nontrivial Berry phase shift only in one of the oscillatory frequencies. We interpret this as a Berry phase arising from the semi-classical electronic Landau orbit which links with the nodal ring when the magnetic field lies in the mirror (ab) plane. Furthermore, additional Berry phase accumulates while rotating the magnetic field for the second orbit in the same orientation which does not link with the nodal ring. These effects are expected in CaAgAs due to the lack of inversion symmetry. Our study experimentally demonstrates that CaAgAs is an ideal platform for exploring the physics of nodal line semimetals and our approach can be extended to other materials in which trivial and nontrivial oscillations are present.
Novel materials incorporating electronic degrees of freedom other than charge, including spin, orbital or valley textit{et al} have manifested themselves to be of the great interests and applicable potentials. Recently, the multipolar degrees of free dom have attracted remarkable attention in the electronic correlated effects. In this work, we systematically studied the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the topological semimetal candidate PrBi in the framework of crystalline electric field theory. Our results demonstrate the $Gamma_3$ non-Kramers doublet as the ground state of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) ions. This ground state is nonmagnetic but carries a non-zero quadrupolar moment $langlehat{O}_2^0rangle$. A quadrupolar phase transition is inferred below 0.08 K. No obvious quadrupolar Kondo effect can be identified. Ultrahigh-field quantum oscillation measurements confirm PrBi as a semimetal with non-trivial Berry phase and low total carrier density 0.06 /f.u. We discuss the interplay between low carrier density and $4f^2$ quadrupolar moment, and ascribe the weak quadrupolar ordering and Kondo effect to consequences of the low carrier density. PrBi, thus, opens a new window to the physics of topology and strongly correlated effect with quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the low-carrier-density limit, evoking the need for a reexamination of the Nozi`{e}res exhaustion problem in the context of multi-channel Kondo effect.

While recent advances in band theory and sample growth have expanded the series of extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) semimetals in transition metal dipnictides $TmPn_2$ ($Tm$ = Ta, Nb; $Pn$ = P, As, Sb), the experimental study on their electron ic structure and the origin of XMR is still absent. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations and magnetotransport measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on MoAs$_2$, which is isostructural to the $TmPn_2$ family and also exhibits quadratic XMR. We resolve a clear band structure well agreeing with the predictions. Intriguingly, the unambiguously observed Fermi surfaces (FSs) are dominated by an open-orbit topology extending along both the [100] and [001] directions in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. We further reveal the trivial topological nature of MoAs$_2$ by bulk parity analysis. Based on these results, we examine the proposed XMR mechanisms in other semimetals, and conclusively ascribe the origin of quadratic XMR in MoAs$_2$ to the carriers motion on the FSs with dominant open-orbit topology, innovating in the understanding of quadratic XMR in semimetals.

We report the synthesis of single-crystal NbC, a transition metal carbide with various unusual properties. Transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements demonstrate that NbC is a conventional superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of 11.5 K. Our theoretical calculations show that NbC is a type-II Dirac semimetal with strong Fermi surface nesting, which is supported by our ARPES measurement results. We also observed the superconducting gaps of NbC using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and found some unconventional behaviors. These intriguing superconducting and topological properties, combined with the high corrosion resistance, make NbC an ideal platform for both fundamental research and device applications.
We report the magnetoresistance of ScSb, which is a semimetal with a simple rocksalt-type structure. We found that the magnetoresistance reaches $sim$28000 % at 2 K and 14 T in our best sample, and it exhibits a resistivity plateau at low temperature s. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations extracted from the magnetoresistance data allow the full construction of the Fermi surface, including the so-called $alpha_3$ pocket which has been missing in other closely related monoantimonides, and an additional hole pocket centered at $Gamma$. The electron concentration ($n$) and the hole concentration ($p$) are extracted from our analysis, which indicate that ScSb is a nearly compensated semimetal with $n/papprox0.93$. The calculated band structure indicates the absence of a band inversion, and the large magnetoresistance in ScSb can be attributed to the nearly perfect compensation of electrons and holes, despite the existence of the additional hole pocket.
