Time-resolved coherent X-ray diffraction is used to measure the spatially resolved magnetization structure within FePt nanoparticles during laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization. The momentum-dependent X-ray magnetic diffraction shows that demagnetization proceeds at different rates at different X-ray momentum transfer. We show that the observed momentum-dependent scattering has the signature of inhomogeneous demagnetization within the nanoparticles, with the demagnetization proceeding more rapidly at the boundary of the nanoparticle. A shell region of reduced magnetization forms and moves inwards at a supermagnonic velocity. Spin-transport calculations show that the shell formation is driven by superdiffusive spin flux mainly leaving the nanoparticle into the surrounding carbon. Quantifying this non-local contribution to the demagnetization allows us to separate it from the local demagnetization.

We present X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) and d.c. magnetization measurements performed on ball-milled CuFe2O4 samples. The average particle size <d> was found to decrease to the nanometer range after t=15 min of milling. Room t emperature Mossbauer data showed that the fraction of particles above the blocking temperature TB increases with milling time, and almost complete superparamagnetic samples are obtained for <d> = 7(2) nm. Magnetization measurements below TB suggest spin canting in milled samples. The values of saturation moment mu_S reveal that site populations are slightly affected by milling. Mossbauer resonant intensities are accounted for on the basis of local disorder of Fe3+ environments, and the development of sample inhomogeneities of CuxFe3-xO4 composition.

We have studied ultrafast photoinduced demagnetization in GaMnAs via two-color time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. Below-bandgap midinfrared pump pulses strongly excite the valence band, while near-infrared probe pulses reveal sub-picose cond demagnetization that is followed by an ultrafast ($sim$1 ps) partial recovery of the Kerr signal. Through comparison with InMnAs, we attribute the signal recovery to an ultrafast energy relaxation of holes. We propose that the dynamical polarization of holes through $p$-$d$ scattering is the source of the observed probe signal. These results support the physical picture of femtosecond demagnetization proposed earlier for InMnAs, identifying the critical roles of both energy and spin relaxation of hot holes.
We study the local and non-local magnetoresistance of thin Pt strips deposited onto yttrium iron garnet. The local magnetoresistive response, inferred from the voltage drop measured along one given Pt strip upon current-biasing it, shows the characte ristic magnetization orientation dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance. We simultaneously also record the non-local voltage appearing along a second, electrically isolated, Pt strip, separated from the current carrying one by a gap of a few 100 nm. The corresponding non-local magnetoresistance exhibits the symmetry expected for a magnon spin accumulation-driven process, confirming the results recently put forward by Cornelissen et al. [1]. Our magnetotransport data, taken at a series of different temperatures as a function of magnetic field orientation, rotating the externally applied field in three mutually orthogonal planes, show that the mechanisms behind the spin Hall and the non-local magnetoresistance are qualitatively different. In particular, the non-local magnetoresistance vanishes at liquid Helium temperatures, while the spin Hall magnetoresistance prevails.
We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $tau_textrm{Pt } = 0.6 textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $tau_textrm{total} = 0.1 textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.

We investigated the temperature dependence of the magnetic damping in the exchange biased Pt/ Fe50Mn50 /Fe20Ni80 /SiOx multilayers. In samples having a strong exchange bias, we observed a drastic decrease of the magnetic damping of the FeNi with incr easing temperature up to the blocking temperature. The results essentially indicate that the non-local enhancement of the magnetic damping can be choked by the adjacent antiferromagnet and its temperature dependent exchange bias. We also pointed out that such a strong temperature dependent damping may be very beneficial for spintronic applications.
