We establish a correspondence between the dimer model on a bipartite graph and a circle pattern with the combinatorics of that graph, which holds for graphs that are either planar or embedded on the torus. The set of positive face weights on the graph gives a set of global coordinates on the space of circle patterns with embedded dual. Under this correspondence, which extends the previously known isoradial case, the urban renewal (local move for dimer models) is equivalent to the Miquel move (local move for circle patterns). As a consequence the Miquel dynamics on circle patterns is governed by the octahedron recurrence. As special cases of these circle pattern embeddings, we recover harmonic embeddings for resistor networks and s-embeddings for the Ising model.

We give a completely constructive solution to Tarskis circle squaring problem. More generally, we prove a Borel version of an equidecomposition theorem due to Laczkovich. If $k geq 1$ and $A, B subseteq mathbb{R}^k$ are bounded Borel sets with the sa me positive Lebesgue measure whose boundaries have upper Minkowski dimension less than $k$, then $A$ and $B$ are equidecomposable by translations using Borel pieces. This answers a question of Wagon. Our proof uses ideas from the study of flows in graphs, and a recent result of Gao, Jackson, Krohne, and Seward on special types of witnesses to the hyperfiniteness of free Borel actions of $mathbb{Z}^d$.
We study local and global approximations of smooth nets of curvature lines and smooth conjugate nets by respective discrete nets (circular nets and planar quadrilateral nets) with infinitesimal quads. It is shown that choosing the points of discrete nets on the smooth surface one can obtain second-order approximation globally. Also a simple geometric construction for approximate determination of principal directions of smooth surfaces is given.
The dimer model on a strip is considered as a Yang-Baxter mbox{integrable} six vertex model at the free-fermion point with crossing parameter $lambda=tfrac{pi}{2}$ and quantum group invariant boundary conditions. A one-to-many mapping of vertex onto dimer configurations allows for the solution of the free-fermion model to be applied to the anisotropic dimer model on a square lattice where the dimers are rotated by $45degree$ compared to their usual orientation. In a suitable gauge, the dimer model is described by the Temperley-Lieb algebra with loop fugacity $beta=2coslambda=0$. It follows that the model is exactly solvable in geometries of arbitrary finite size. We establish and solve transfer matrix inversion identities on the strip with arbitrary finite width $N$. In the continuum scaling limit, in sectors with magnetization $S_z$, we obtain the conformal weights $Delta_{s}=big((2-s)^2-1big)/8$ where $s=|S_z|+1=1,2,3,ldots$. We further show that the corresponding finitized characters $chit_s^{(N)}(q)$ decompose into sums of $q$-Narayana numbers or, equivalently, skew $q$-binomials. In the particle representation, the local face tile operators give a representation of the fermion algebra and the fermion particle trajectories play the role of nonlocal degrees of freedom. We argue that, in the continuum scaling limit, there exist nontrivial Jordan blocks of rank 2 in the Virasoro dilatation operator $L_0$. This confirms that, with quantum group invariant boundary conditions, the dimer model gives rise to a {em logarithmic} conformal field theory with central charge $c=-2$, minimal conformal weight $Delta_{text{min}}=-frac{1}{8}$ and effective central charge $c_{text{eff}}=1$.Our analysis of the structure of the ensuing rank 2 modules indicates that the familiar staggered $c=-2$ modules appear as submodules.

We derive the complete asymptotic expansion in terms of powers of $N$ for the geodesic $f$-energy of $N$ equally spaced points on a rectifiable simple closed curve $Gamma$ in ${mathbb R}^p$, $pgeq2$, as $N to infty$. For $f$ decreasing and convex, su ch a point configuration minimizes the $f$-energy $sum_{j eq k}f(d(mathbf{x}_j, mathbf{x}_k))$, where $d$ is the geodesic distance (with respect to $Gamma$) between points on $Gamma$. Completely monotonic functions, analytic kernel functions, Laurent series, and weighted kernel functions $f$ are studied. % Of particular interest are the geodesic Riesz potential $1/d^s$ ($s eq 0$) and the geodesic logarithmic potential $log(1/d)$. By analytic continuation we deduce the expansion for all complex values of $s$.
In 2009, the first author introduced a new class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions, associated with arbitrary compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. It represents a natural, but nontrivial extension of th e theory of `geometric zeta functions of bounded fractal strings. In this memoir, we introduce the class of `relative fractal drums (or RFDs), which contains the classes of bounded fractal strings and of compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces as special cases. Furthermore, the associated (relative) distance zeta functions of RFDs, extend (in a suitable sense) the aforementioned classes of fractal zeta functions. This notion is very general and flexible, enabling us to view practically all of the previously studied aspects of the theory of fractal zeta functions from a unified perspective as well as to go well beyond the previous theory. The abscissa of (absolute) convergence of any relative fractal drum is equal to the relative box dimension of the RFD. We pay particular attention to the question of constructing meromorphic extensions of the distance zeta functions of RFDs, as well as to the construction of transcendentally $infty$-quasiperiodic RFDs (i.e., roughly, RFDs with infinitely many quasiperiods, all of which are algebraically independent). We also describe a class of RFDs (and, in particular, a new class of bounded sets), called {em maximal hyperfractals}, such that the critical line of (absolute) convergence consists solely of nonremovable singularities of the associated relative distance zeta functions. Finally, we also describe a class of Minkowski measurable RFDs which possess an infinite sequence of complex dimensions of arbitrary multiplicity $mge1$, and even an infinite sequence of essential singularities along the critical line.
