In this research work the quantum theory of Ur-alternatives of Carl Friedrich von Weizsacker is considered. In This theory all objects and interactions in nature are constituted by abstract purely quantum logical relations in time. Such structures can be devided into binary alternatives, which are called Ur-Alternatives with respect to this principle meaning, and this leads to a tensor space of many Ur-alternatives. The indistinguishability of the Ur-alternatives yields two Hilbert spaces, the tensor space of symmetric and antisymmetric states under permutations of the Ur-alternatives. It is shown how the structures in the symmetric space can be represented in a three dimensional real position space connected to time according to special relativity. Accordingly this theory obtains ultimately a deep understanding of the EPR-paradox, since logic is independent of topological structures and causal relations in space. The antisymmetric space, which because of the Pauli principle contains much less degress of freedem, yields the additional quantum numbers of the elementary particles. Based on the demand for the highest possible symmetry in the tensor space, the Yang-Mills gauge theories of the standard model as well as a translational gauge formulation of general relativity in a purely quantum logical description are derived. The equations determine entanglements of states containing many Ur-alternatives and this concept is the analogue to classical pointwise interactions between separated objects. This means that the main structures of the SU(N)-interactions of the standard model of elementary particle physics as well as gravitation according to general relativiy are unified in a purely quantum theoretical conceptional framework. Finally it is derived an extended version of the E8-group, the biggest exceptional Lie-group.

This activity was created within the framework of the Space for Education project, which ams at experiencing physical principles on the basis of topics related to space travel. Artificial satellites are suitable as application-oriented examples to ex plain the effect of gravity on their orbits. This working material deals with the orbit of the International Space Station (ISS) around the Earth. In simple calculations and representations, the students learn how the orbits of artificial satellites are created and which characteristic velocities occur. They compare their ISS results with those of geostationary satellites and discover applications of this particular orbit. This activity was created within the framework of the Space for Education project, which ams at experiencing physical principles on the basis of topics related to space travel. It enables the students to investigate the power supply of the Internatio nal Space Station. If available, they determine the current parameters of the electrical system from the telemetry of the ISS in real time. Otherwise, they can use archive data attached to the working documents. From this, they calculate the electrical power provided by the solar cells. In inhomogeneous dielectric media the divergence of the electromagnetic stress is related to the gradients of varepsilon and mu, which is a consequence of Maxwells equations. Investigating spherically symmetric media we show that this seemingly unive rsal relationship is violated for electromagnetic vacuum forces such as the generalized van der Waals and Casimir forces. The stress needs to acquire an additional anomalous pressure. The anomaly is a result of renormalization, the need to subtract infinities in the stress for getting a finite, physical force. The anomalous pressure appears in the stress in media like dark energy appears in the energy-momentum tensor in general relativity. We propose and analyse an experiment to probe the van der Waals anomaly with ultracold atoms. The experiment may not only test an unusual phenomenon of quantum forces, but also an analogue of dark energy, shedding light where nothing is known empirically.
The van der Waals heterostructures are a fertile frontier for discovering emergent phenomena in condensed matter systems. They are constructed by stacking elements of a large library of two-dimensional materials, which couple together through van der Waals interactions. However, the number of possible combinations within this library is staggering, and fully exploring their potential is a daunting task. Here we introduce van der Waals metamaterials to rapidly prototype and screen their quantum counterparts. These layered metamaterials are designed to reshape the flow of ultrasound to mimic electron motion. In particular, we show how to construct analogues of all stacking configurations of bilayer and trilayer graphene through the use of interlayer membranes that emulate van der Waals interactions. By changing the membranes density and thickness, we reach coupling regimes far beyond that of conventional graphene. We anticipate that van der Waals metamaterials will explore, extend, and inform future electronic devices. Equally, they allow the transfer of useful electronic behavior to acoustic systems, such as flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, which may aid the development of super-resolution ultrasound imagers.
In this thesis, a theoretical treatment of the relation between electrophoretic velocity and the potential of the double layer of colloidal particles is presented. Translators note: The theory of electrophoresis is one of the foundational topics th at underpinned the development of colloid and surface science and ranks with the famous Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory of colloidal stability. J. Th. G. Overbeek (Theo to all who knew him) was the first to develop a complete theoretical analysis of the electrophoretic motion of a charged spherical particle under the influence of an external electric field. This provided the theoretical framework for a widely used experimental method to characterize the state of charge and particle size of small colloidal particles. The solution of this problem required mastery of fluid mechanics, colloidal electrostatics, statistical thermodynamics and transport theory in addition to solid applied mathematics. Theo carried out this study as his doctoral thesis under H.R. Kruyt at Utrecht University. The thesis, in Dutch, was later published as a monograph. Given the important pedagogic value and historical status of this work, we felt that it deserved to enjoy a wide readership.
