Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) are defined as very small structures that combine electrical and mechanical components on a common substrate. Here, the electrostatic-elastic case is considered, where an elastic membrane is allowed to deflect above a ground plate under the action of an electric potential, whose strength is proportional to a parameter $lambda$. Such devices are commonly described by a parabolic partial differential equation that contains a singular nonlinear source term. The singularity in that term corresponds to the so-called touchdown phenomenon, where the membrane establishes contact with the ground plate. Touchdown is known to imply the non-existence of steady state solutions and blow-up of solutions in finite time. We study a recently proposed extension of that canonical model, where such singularities are avoided due to the introduction of a regularizing term involving a small regularization parameter $varepsilon$. Methods from dynamical systems and geometric singular perturbation theory, in particular the desingularization technique known as blow-up, allow for a precise description of steady-state solutions of the regularized model, as well as for a detailed resolution of the resulting bifurcation diagram. The interplay between the two main model parameters $varepsilon$ and $lambda$ is emphasized; in particular, the focus is on the singular limit as both parameters tend to zero.

We are concerned with polynomial ordinary differential systems that arise from modelling chemical reaction networks. For such systems, which may be of high dimension and may depend on many parameters, it is frequently of interest to obtain a reductio n of dimension in certain parameter ranges. Singular perturbation theory, as initiated by Tikhonov and Fenichel, provides a path toward such reductions. In the present paper we discuss parameter values that lead to singular perturbation reductions (so-called Tikhonov-Fenichel parameter values, or TFPVs). An algorithmic approach is known, but it is feasible for small dimensions only. Here we characterize conditions for classes of reaction networks for which TFPVs arise by turning off reactions (by setting rate parameters to zero), or by removing certain species (which relates to the classical quasi-steady state approach to model reduction). In particular, we obtain definitive results for the class of complex balanced reaction networks (of deficiency zero) and first order reaction networks.

In a system of noisy self-propelled particles with interactions that favor directional alignment, collective motion will appear if the density of particles is beyond a critical density. Starting with a reduced model for collective motion, we determin e how the critical density depends on the form of the initial perturbation. Specifically, we employ a renormalization-group improved perturbative method to analyze the model equations, and show analytically, up to first order in the perturbation parameter, how the critical density is modified by the strength of the initial angular perturbation in the system.
We study the singular perturbation of an elastic energy with a singular weight. The minimization of this energy results in a multi-scale pattern formation. We derive an energy scaling law in terms of the perturbation parameter and prove that, althoug h one cannot expect periodicity of minimizers, the energy of a minimizer is uniformly distributed across the sample. Finally, following the approach developed by Alberti and M{u}ller in 2001 we prove that a sequence of minimizers of the perturbed energies converges to a Young measure supported on functions of slope $pm 1$ and of period depending on the location in the domain and the weights in the energy.
The quasi-steady-state approximation is widely used to develop simplified deterministic or stochastic models of enzyme catalyzed reactions. In deterministic models, the quasi-steady-state approximation can be mathematically justified from singular pe rturbation theory. For several closed enzymatic reactions, the homologous extension of the quasi-steady-state approximation to the stochastic regime, known as the stochastic quasi-steady-state approximation, has been shown to be accurate under the analogous conditions that permit the quasi-steady-state reduction of the deterministic counterpart. However, it was recently demonstrated that the extension of the stochastic quasi-steady-state approximation to an open Michaelis--Menten reaction mechanism is only valid under a condition that is far more restrictive than the qualifier that ensures the validity of its corresponding deterministic quasi-steady-state approximation. In this paper, we suggest a possible explanation for this discrepancy from the lens of geometric singular perturbation theory. In so doing, we illustrate a misconception in the application of the quasi-steady-state approximation: timescale separation does not imply singular perturbation.

For a generic vector field robustly without horseshoes, and an aperiodic chain recurrent class with singularities whose saddle values have different signs, the extended rescaled Poincare map is associated with a central model. We estimate such centra l model and show it must have chain recurrent central segments over the singularities. This obstructs the application of central model to create horseshoes, and indicates that, differing from $C^1$ diffeomorphisms, solo using central model method is insufficient as a strategy to prove weak Palis conjecture for higher dimensional ($geq 4$) singular flows. Our computation is actually based on simplified way of addressing blowup construction. As a byproduct, we are applicable to directly compute the extended rescaled Poincare map upto second order derivatives, which we believe has its independent interests.
