Helium nanodroplets are doped with cesium and molecular hydrogen and subsequently ionized by electrons. Mass spectra reveal H$_x$Cs$^{+}$ ions that contain as many as 130 hydrogen atoms. Two features in the spectra are striking: First, the abundance of ions with an odd number of hydrogen atoms is very low; the abundance of HCs$^+$ is only 1 % that of H$_2$Cs$^+$. The dominance of even-numbered species is in stark contrast to previous studies of pure or doped hydrogen cluster ions. Second, the abundance of (H$_2$)$_n$Cs$^+$ features anomalies at n = 8, 12, 32, 44, and 52. Guided by previous work on ions solvated in hydrogen and helium we assign the anomalies at n = 12, 32, 44 to the formation of three concentric, solid-like solvation shells of icosahedral symmetry around Cs$^+$. Preliminary density functional theory calculations for n $le$ 14 are reported as well.

Intermolecular bonding of 3-aminopropanol (3-AP) molecules is discussed in comparison to 2-aminopropanol (2-AP) and 2-aminoethamol (2-AE). The consideration is based on the results of nonempirical quantum chemical simulations of the molecular cluster s carried out at the MP2/6-31+G(d,p) level. Particular attention is paid to the formation of variously ordered 3-AP aggregates, which can be doubled or bracelet rings, extended chains, ribbons, or double helices, impossible in the case of any close amino alcohol analogue, but favorable for the solvation of diverse either hydrophilic or hydrophobic species.
Clusters of para-hydrogen (pH2) have been predicted to exhibit superfluid behavior, but direct observation of this phenomenon has been elusive. Combining experiments and theoretical simulations, we have determined the size evolution of the superfluid response of pH2 clusters doped with carbon dioxide (CO2). Reduction of the effective inertia is observed when the dopant is surrounded by the pH2 solvent. This marks the onset of molecular superfluidity in pH2. The fractional occupation of solvation rings around CO2 correlates with enhanced superfluid response for certain cluster sizes.

The covalent-like characteristics of hydrogen bonds offer a new perspective on intermolecular interactions. Here, using density functional theory and post-Hartree-Fock methods, we reveal that there are two bonding molecular orbitals (MOs) crossing th e O and H atoms of the hydrogen-bond in water dimer. Energy decomposition analysis also shows a non-negligible contribution of the induction term. These results illustrate the covalent-like character of the hydrogen bond between water molecules, which contributes to the essential understanding of ice, liquid water, related materials, and life sciences.
Hydrogen bond (H-bond) covalency has recently been observed in ice and liquid water, while the penetrating molecular orbitals (MOs) in the H-bond region of most typical water dimer system, (H2O)2, have also been discovered. However, obtaining the qua ntitative contribution of these MOs to the H-bond interaction is still problematic. In this work, we introduced the orbital-resolved electron density projected integral (EDPI) along the H-bond to approach this problem. The calculations show that, surprisingly, the electronic occupied orbital (HOMO-4) of (H2O)2 accounts for about 40% of the electron density at the bond critical point. Moreover, the charge transfer analysis visualizes the electron accumulating effect of the orbital interaction within the H-bond between water molecules, supporting its covalent-like character. Our work expands the classical understanding of H-bond with specific contributions from certain MOs, and will also advance further research into such covalency and offer quantitative electronic structure insights into intermolecular systems.
Low energy electron attachment to mixed (H$_2$)$_x$/(O$_2$)$_y$ clusters and their deuterated analogues has been investigated for the first time. These experiments were carried out using liquid helium nanodroplets to form the clusters, and the effect of the added electron was then monitored via mass spectrometry. There are some important differences between electron attachment to the pure clusters and to the mixed clusters. A particularly notable feature is the formation of HO$_2$$^{-}$ and H$_2$O$^{-}$ ions from an electron-induced chemical reaction between the two dopants. The chemistry leading to these anions appears to be driven by electron resonances associated with H$_2$ rather than O$_2$. The electron resonances for H$_2$ can lead to dissociative electron attachment (DEA), just as for the free H$_2$ molecule. However, there is evidence that the resonance in H$_2$ can also lead to rapid electron transfer to O$_2$, which then induces DEA of the O$_2$. This kind of excitation transfer has not, as far as we are aware, been reported previously
