Quantum thermodynamics is emerging both as a topic of fundamental research and as means to understand and potentially improve the performance of quantum devices. A prominent platform for achieving the necessary manipulation of quantum states is superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED). In this platform, thermalization of a quantum system can be achieved by interfacing the circuit QED subsystem with a thermal reservoir of appropriate Hilbert dimensionality. Here we study heat transport through an assembly consisting of a superconducting qubit capacitively coupled between two nominally identical coplanar waveguide resonators, each equipped with a heat reservoir in the form of a normal-metal mesoscopic resistor termination. We report the observation of tunable photonic heat transport through the resonator-qubit-resonator assembly, showing that the reservoir-to-reservoir heat flux depends on the interplay between the qubit-resonator and the resonator-reservoir couplings, yielding qualitatively dissimilar results in different coupling regimes. Our quantum heat valve is relevant for the realisation of quantum heat engines and refrigerators, that can be obtained, for example, by exploiting the time-domain dynamics and coherence of driven superconducting qubits. This effort would ultimately bridge the gap between the fields of quantum information and thermodynamics of mesoscopic systems.

We discuss the heat transfer by photons between two metals coupled by a linear element with a reactive impedance. Using a simple circuit approach, we calculate the spectral power transmitted from one resistor to the other and find that it is determin ed by the photon transmission coefficient, which depends on the impedances of the metals and the coupling element. We study the total photonic power flow for different coupling impedances, both in the linear regime, where the temperature difference between the metals is small, and in the non-linear regime of large temperature differences.
Superconducting microwave circuits show great potential for practical quantum technological applications such as quantum information processing. However, fast and on-demand initialization of the quantum degrees of freedom in these devices remains a c hallenge. Here, we experimentally implement a tunable heat sink that is potentially suitable for the initialization of superconducting qubits. Our device consists of two coupled resonators. The first resonator has a high quality factor and a fixed frequency whereas the second resonator is designed to have a low quality factor and a tunable resonance frequency. We engineer the low quality factor using an on-chip resistor and the frequency tunability using a superconducting quantum interference device. When the two resonators are in resonance, the photons in the high-quality resonator can be efficiently dissipated. We show that the corresponding loaded quality factor can be tuned from above $10^5$ down to a few thousand at 10 GHz in good quantitative agreement with our theoretical model.

We study heat transport in quantum spin systems analytically and numerically. First, we demonstrate that heat current through a two-level quantum spin system can be modulated from zero to a finite value by tuning a magnetic field. Second, we show tha t a spin system, consisting of two dissimilar parts - one is gapped and the other is gapless, exhibits current rectification and negative differential thermal resistance. Possible experimental realizations by using molecular junctions or magnetic materials are discussed.

A quantum dot driven by two ac gate potentials oscillating with a phase lag may be regarded as a quantum engine, where energy is transported and dissipated in the form of heat. In this chapter we introduce a microscopic model for a quantum pump and a nalyze the fundamental principle for the conservation of the charge and energy in this device. We also present the basics of two well established many-body techniques to treat quantum transport in harmonically time-dependent systems. We discuss the different operating modes of this quantum engine, including the mechanism of heat generation. Finally, we establish the principles of quantum refrigeration within the weak driving regime. We also show that it is possible to achieve a regime where part of the work done by some of the ac fields can be coherently transported and can be used by the other driving voltages.
In this Colloquium recent advances in the field of quantum heat transport are reviewed. This topic has been investigated theoretically for several decades, but only during the past twenty years have experiments on various mesoscopic systems become fe asible. A summary of the theoretical basis for describing heat transport in one-dimensional channels is first provided. Then the main experimental investigations of quantized heat conductance due to phonons, photons, electrons, and anyons in such channels are presented. These experiments are important for understanding the fundamental processes that underly the concept of a heat conductance quantum for a single channel. Then an illustration on how one can control the quantum heat transport by means of electric and magnetic fields, and how such tunable heat currents can be useful in devices is given. This lays the basis for realizing various thermal device components such as quantum heat valves, rectifiers, heat engines, refrigerators, and calorimeters. Also of interest are fluctuations of quantum heat currents, both for fundamental reasons and for optimizing the most sensitive thermal detectors; at the end of the review the status of research on this intriguing topic is given.
