The two-dimensional electron system in an InAs quantum well has emerged as a prime candidate for hosting exotic quasi-particles with non-Abelian statistics such as Majorana fermions and parafermions. To attain its full promise, however, the electron system has to be clean enough to exhibit electron-electron interaction phenomena. Here we report the observation of fractional quantum Hall effect in a very low disorder InAs quantum well with a well-width of 24 nm, containing a two-dimensional electron system with a density $n=7.8 times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ and low-temperature mobility $1.8 times 10^6$ cm$^2$/Vs. At a temperature of $simeq35$ mK and $Bsimeq24$ T, we observe a deep minimum in the longitudinal resistance, accompanied by a nearly quantized Hall plateau at Landau level filling factor $ u=4/3$.

Measurements of the Hall and dissipative conductivity of a strained Ge quantum well on a SiGe/(001)Si substrate in the quantum Hall regime are reported. We find quantum Hall states in the Composite Fermion family and a precursor signal at filling fra ction $ u=5/2$. We analyse the results in terms of thermally activated quantum tunneling of carriers from one internal edge state to another across saddle points in the long range impurity potential. This shows that the gaps for different filling fractions closely follow the dependence predicted by theory. We also find that the estimates of the separation of the edge states at the saddle are in line with the expectations of an electrostatic model in the lowest spin-polarised Landau level (LL), but not in the spin-reversed LL where the density of quasiparticle states is not high enough to accommodate the carriers required.
We report on the detection of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in a modulation doped Al-GaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure bounded by a self-aligned pn-junction, fabricated by the cleaved edge overgrowth method. Light emission due to the recombination of electrons and spin-polarized holes was generated and mapped with a spatial resolution of one micrometer. An edge accumulated spin polarization of up to 11% was measured, induced solely by application of an electric Field perpendicular to the pn-junction. Using a quantum dot structure as light source, a linear dependence of the effective spin polarization, and with that the dominance of the spin Hall effect, with the electric field is seen. Spatially resolved spectroscopy from an epitaxially fabricated LED is demonstrated to be a valuable tool to probe the edge states of electron and hole gases in reduced dimensions.
When electrons are confined in two dimensions and subjected to strong magnetic fields, the Coulomb interactions between them become dominant and can lead to novel states of matter such as fractional quantum Hall liquids. In these liquids electrons li nked to magnetic flux quanta form complex composite quasipartices, which are manifested in the quantization of the Hall conductivity as rational fractions of the conductance quantum. The recent experimental discovery of an anomalous integer quantum Hall effect in graphene has opened up a new avenue in the study of correlated 2D electronic systems, in which the interacting electron wavefunctions are those of massless chiral fermions. However, due to the prevailing disorder, graphene has thus far exhibited only weak signatures of correlated electron phenomena, despite concerted experimental efforts and intense theoretical interest. Here, we report the observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect in ultraclean suspended graphene, supporting the existence of strongly correlated electron states in the presence of a magnetic field. In addition, at low carrier density graphene becomes an insulator with an energy gap tunable by magnetic field. These newly discovered quantum states offer the opportunity to study a new state of matter of strongly correlated Dirac fermions in the presence of large magnetic fields.
We demonstrate the emergence of the quantum Hall (QH) hierarchy in a 2D model of coupled quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. At commensurate values of the magnetic field, the system can develop instabilities to appropriate inter-wire ele ctron hopping processes that drive the system into a variety of QH states. Some of the QH states are not included in the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. In addition, we find operators allowed at any field that lead to novel crystals of Laughlin quasiparticles. We demonstrate that any QH state is the groundstate of a Hamiltonian that we explicitly construct.

Applying a unified approach, we study integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the Hofstadter model with short range interaction between fermions. An effective field, that takes into account the interaction, is determined by both the amplitude and phase. Its amplitude is proportional to the interaction strength, the phase corresponds to the minimum energy. In fact the problem is reduced to the Harper equation with two different scales: the first is a magnetic scale (cell size corresponding to a unit quantum magnetic flux), the second scale (determines the inhomogeneity of the effective field) forms the steady fine structure of the Hofstadter spectrum and leads to the realization of fractional quantum Hall states. In a sample of finite sizes with open boundary conditions, the fine structure of the Hofstadter spectrum also includes the fine structure of the edge chiral modes. The subbands in a fine structure of the Hofstadter band (HB) are separated extremely small quasigaps. The Chern number of a topological HB is conserved during the formation of its fine structure. Edge modes are formed into HB, they connect the nearest-neighbor subbands and determine the fractional conductance for the fractional filling at the Fermi energies corresponding to these quasigaps.
