Semi-tensor product(STP) or matrix (M-) product of matrices turns the set of matrices with arbitrary dimensions into a monoid $({cal M},ltimes)$. A matrix (M-) addition is defined over subsets of a partition of ${cal M}$, and a matrix (M-) equivalence is proposed. Eventually, some quotient spaces are obtained as vector spaces of matrices. Furthermore, a set of formal polynomials is constructed, which makes the quotient space of $({cal M},ltimes)$, denoted by $(Sigma, ltimes)$, a vector space and a monoid. Similarly, a vector addition (V-addition) and a vector equivalence (V-equivalence) are defined on ${cal V}$, the set of vectors of arbitrary dimensions. Then the quotient space of vectors, $Omega$, is also obtained as a vector space. The action of monoid $({cal M},ltimes)$ on ${cal V}$ (or $(Sigma, ltimes)$ on $Omega$) is defined as a vector (V-) product, which becomes a pseudo-dynamic system, called the cross-dimensional linear system (CDLS). Both the discrete time and the continuous time CDLSs have been investigated. For certain time-invariant case, the solutions (trajectories) are presented. Furthermore, the corresponding cross-dimensional linear control systems are also proposed and the controllability and observability are discussed. Both M-product and V-product are generalizations of the conventional matrix product, that is, when the dimension matching condition required by the conventional matrix product is satisfied they coincide with the conventional matrix product. Both M-addition and V-addition are generalizations of conventional matrix addition. Hence, the dynamics discussed in this paper is a generalization of conventional linear system theory.

There exist many ways to stabilize an infinite-dimensional linear autonomous control systems when it is possible. Anyway, finding an exponentially stabilizing feedback control that is as simple as possible may be a challenge. The Riccati theory provi des a nice feedback control but may be computationally demanding when considering a discretization scheme. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) offers a popular way to reduce large-dimensional systems. In the present paper, we establish that, under appropriate spectral assumptions, an exponentially stabilizing feedback Riccati control designed from a POD finite-dimensional approximation of the system stabilizes as well the infinite-dimensional control system.
We are concerned about the controllability of a general linear hyperbolic system of the form $partial_t w (t, x) = Sigma(x) partial_x w (t, x) + gamma C(x) w(t, x) $ ($gamma in mR$) in one space dimension using boundary controls on one side. More pre cisely, we establish the optimal time for the null and exact controllability of the hyperbolic system for generic $gamma$. We also present examples which yield that the generic requirement is necessary. In the case of constant $Sigma$ and of two positive directions, we prove that the null-controllability is attained for any time greater than the optimal time for all $gamma in mR$ and for all $C$ which is analytic if the slowest negative direction can be alerted by {it both} positive directions. We also show that the null-controllability is attained at the optimal time by a feedback law when $C equiv 0$. Our approach is based on the backstepping method paying a special attention on the construction of the kernel and the selection of controls.

We present log-linear dynamical systems, a dynamical system model for positive quantities. We explain the connection to linear dynamical systems and show how convex optimization can be used to identify and control log-linear dynamical systems. We ill ustrate system identification and control with an example from predator-prey dynamics. We conclude by discussing potential applications of the proposed model.
This paper studies model order reduction of multi-agent systems consisting of identical linear passive subsystems, where the interconnection topology is characterized by an undirected weighted graph. Balanced truncation based on a pair of specificall y selected generalized Gramians is implemented on the asymptotically stable part of the full-order network model, which leads to a reduced-order system preserving the passivity of each subsystem. Moreover, it is proven that there exists a coordinate transformation to convert the resulting reduced-order model to a state-space model of Laplacian dynamics. Thus, the proposed method simultaneously reduces the complexity of the network structure and individual agent dynamics, and it preserves the passivity of the subsystems and the synchronization of the network. Moreover, it allows for the a priori computation of a bound on the approximation error. Finally, the feasibility of the method is demonstrated by an example.
This paper deals with the fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem for linear structured systems in which the system matrices are given by zero/nonzero/arbitrary pattern matrices. In this paper, we follow a geometric approach to verify solvability of the FDI problem for such systems. To do so, we first develop a necessary and sufficient condition under which the FDI problem for a given particular linear time-invariant system is solvable. Next, we establish a necessary condition for solvability of the FDI problem for linear structured systems. In addition, we develop a sufficient algebraic condition for solvability of the FDI problem in terms of a rank test on an associated pattern matrix. To illustrate that this condition is not necessary, we provide a counterexample in which the FDI problem is solvable while the condition is not satisfied. Finally, we develop a graph-theoretic condition for the full rank property of a given pattern matrix, which leads to a graph-theoretic condition for solvability of the FDI problem.
