The interaction of (quasi)particles with a periodic potential arises in various domains of science and engineering, such as solid-state physics, chemical physics, and communication theory. An attractive test ground to investigate this interaction is represented by superconductors with artificial pinning sites, where magnetic flux quanta (Abrikosov vortices) interact with the pinning potential $U(r) = U(r + R)$ induced by a nanostructure. At a combination of microwave and dc currents, fluxons act as mobile probes of $U(r)$: The ac component shakes the fluxons in the vicinity of their equilibrium points which are unequivocally determined by the local pinning force counterbalanced by the Lorentz force induced by the dc current, linked to the curvature of $U(r)$ which can then be used for a successful fitting of the voltage responses. A good correlation of the deduced dependences $U(r)$ with the cross sections of the nanostructures points to that pinning is primarily caused by vortex length reduction. Our findings pave a new route to a non-destructive evaluation of periodic pinning in superconductor thin films. The approach should also apply to a broad class of systems whose evolution in time can be described by the coherent motion of (quasi)particles in a periodic potential.

We study theoretically the effects of heating on the magnetic flux moving in superconductors with a periodic array of pinning sites (PAPS). The voltage-current characteristic (VI-curve) of superconductors with a PAPS includes a region with negative d ifferential resistivity (NDR) of S-type (i.e., S-shaped VI-curve), while the heating of the superconductor by moving flux lines produces NDR of N-type (i.e., with an N-shaped VI-curve). We analyze the instability of the uniform flux flow corresponding to different parts of the VI-curve with NDR. Especially, we focus on the appearance of the filamentary instability that corresponds to an S-type NDR, which is extremely unusual for superconductors. We argue that the simultaneous existence of NDR of both N- and S-type gives rise to the appearance of self-organized two-dimensional dynamical structures in the flux flow mode. We study the effect of the pinning site positional disorder on the NDR and show that moderate disorder does not change the predicted results, while strong disorder completely suppresses the S-type NDR.

We study magnetic flux interacting with arrays of pinning sites (APS) placed on vertices of hyperbolic tesselations (HT). We show that, due to the gradient in the density of pinning sites, HT APS are capable of trapping vortices for a broad range of applied magnetic fluxes. Thus, the penetration of magnetic field in HT APS is essentially different from the usual scenario predicted by the Bean model. We demonstrate that, due to the enhanced asymmetry of the surface barrier for vortex entry and exit, this HT APS could be used as a capacitor to store magnetic flux.

Magnetic hysteresis loops (MHLs) have been comparatively measured on both textured and single crystalline Sc5Ir4Si10 superconductors. Critical current densities and flux pinning forces are calculated from MHLs by Bean model. Three kinds of peaks of t he flux pinning force are found at low fields near zero, intermediated fields, and high fields near the upper critical field, respectively. The characters and origins of these peaks are studied in detail.
Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduc ed by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
The vortex glass state formed by magnetic flux lines in a type-II superconductor is shown to possess non-trivial three-body correlations. While such correlations are usually difficult to measure in glassy systems, the magnetic fields associated with the flux vortices allow us to probe these via muon-spin rotation measurements of the local field distribution. We show via numerical simulations and analytic calculations that these observations provide detailed microscopic insight into the local order of the vortex glass and more generally validate a theoretical framework for correlations in glassy systems.
