We report on the discovery of a 2-dimensional copper-bismuth nano sheet from textit{ab initio} calculations, which we call cubine. According to our predictions, single layers of cubine can be isolated from the recently reported high-pressure CuBi bulk material (metastable at ambient conditions) at an energetic cost of merely $approx 20$~meV/AA$^2$, comparable to separating single layers of graphene from graphite. Our calculations suggest that cubine has remarkable electronic and electrochemical properties: It is a superconductor with a moderate electron-phonon coupling $lambda=0.5$, leading to a $T_c$ of $approx1$~K, and can be readily intercalated with lithium with a high diffusibility, rendering it a promising candidate material as an anode in lithium-ion batteries.

Although copper and bismuth do not form any compounds at ambient conditions, two intermetallics, CuBi and Cu$_{11}$Bi$_7$, were recently synthesized at high pressures. Here we report on the discovery of additional copper-bismuth phases at elevated pr essures with high-densities from ab initio calculations. In particular, a Cu$_2$Bi compound is found to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 59 GPa, crystallizing in the cubic Laves structure. In strong contrast to Cu$_{11}$Bi$_7$ and CuBi, cubic Cu$_2$Bi does not exhibit any voids or channels. Since the bismuth lone pairs in cubic Cu$_2$Bi are stereochemically inactive, the constituent elements can be closely packed and a high density of 10.52 g/cm$^{3}$ at 0 GPa is achieved. The moderate electron-phonon coupling of $lambda=0.68$ leads to a superconducting temperature of 2 K, which exceeds the values observed both in Cu$_{11}$Bi$_7$and CuBi, as well as in elemental Cu and Bi .
We report on the ab initio discovery of a novel putative ground state for quasi two-dimensional TiO$_2$ through a structural search using the minima hopping method with an artificial neural network potential. The structure is based on a honeycomb lat tice and is energetically lower than the experimentally reported lepidocrocite sheet by 7~meV/atom, and merely 13~meV/atom higher in energy than the ground state rutile bulk structure. According to our calculations, the hexagonal sheet is stable against mechanical stress, it is chemically inert and can be deposited on various substrates without disrupting the structure. Its properties differ significantly from all known TiO$_2$ bulk phases with a large gap of 5.05~eV that can be tuned through strain engineering.
The synthesis of materials in high-pressure experiments has recently attracted increasing attention, especially since the discovery of record breaking superconducting temperatures in the sulfur-hydrogen and other hydrogen-rich systems. Commonly, the initial precursor in a high pressure experiment contains constituent elements that are known to form compounds at ambient conditions, however the discovery of high-pressure phases in systems immiscible under ambient conditions poses an additional materials design challenge. We performed an extensive multi component $ab,initio$ structural search in the immiscible Fe--Bi system at high pressure and report on the surprising discovery of two stable compounds at pressures above $approx36$ GPa, FeBi$_2$ and FeBi$_3$. According to our predictions, FeBi$_2$ is a metal at the border of magnetism with a conventional electron-phonon mediated superconducting transition temperature of $T_{rm c}=1.3$ K at 40 GPa. In analogy to other iron-based materials, FeBi$_2$ is possibly a non-conventional superconductor with a real $T_{rm c}$ significantly exceeding the values obtained within Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory.

The texture of high purity superconducting niobium sheets plays an important role in the physical and mechanical properties of high purity niobium sheet that are important for manufacturing of superconducting accelerator cavities. In a particular bat ch of sheet metal, orientation imaging microscopy showed an inhomogeneous texture from the surface to the mid-thickness of the sheet consisting a gamma fiber, {111}<uvw>), cube fiber, {100}<uvw>), and also some components on the alpha fiber, {hkl}<110>. With uniaxial deformation, peaks on the {uvw}<111> gamma fiber evolve differently depending on the in-plane direction of deformation, and the position in the sample (surface vs. center). Applying a different strain path such as balanced biaxial bulging, leads to development of rotated Goss, {110}<110> components in the texture of the deformed niobium. These results show that the texture of niobium is very sensitive to the deformation and strain path.
Stochastic inhomogeneous oxidation is an inherent characteristic of copper (Cu), often hindering color tuning and bandgap engineering of oxides. Coherent control of the interface between metal and metal oxide remains unresolved. We demonstrate cohere nt propagation of an oxidation front in single-crystal Cu thin film to achieve a full-color spectrum for Cu by precisely controlling its oxide-layer thickness. Grain boundary-free and atomically flat films prepared by atomic-sputtering epitaxy allow tailoring of the oxide layer with an abrupt interface via heat treatment with a suppressed temperature gradient. Color tuning of nearly full-color RGB indices is realized by precise control of oxide-layer thickness; our samples covered ~50.4% of the sRGB color space. The color of copper/copper oxide is realized by the reconstruction of the quantitative yield color from oxide pigment (complex dielectric functions of Cu2O) and light-layer interference (reflectance spectra obtained from the Fresnel equations) to produce structural color. We further demonstrate laser-oxide lithography with micron-scale linewidth and depth through local phase transformation to oxides embedded in the metal, providing spacing necessary for semiconducting transport and optoelectronics functionality.
