The Finite Difference (FD) and the Spectral Boundary Integral (SBI) methods have been used extensively to model spontaneously propagating shear cracks in a variety of engineering and geophysical applications. In this paper, we propose a new modeling approach, in which these two methods are combined through consistent exchange of boundary tractions and displacements. Benefiting from the flexibility of FD and the efficiency of spectral boundary integral (SBI) methods, the proposed hybrid scheme will solve a wide range of problems in a computationally efficient way. We demonstrate the validity of the approach using two examples for dynamic rupture propagation: one in the presence of a low velocity layer and the other in which off-fault plasticity is permitted. We discuss possible potential uses of the hybrid scheme in earthquake cycle simulations as well as an exact absorbing boundary condition

We examine the non-equilibrium radiative heat transfer between a plate and finite cylinders and cones, making the first accurate theoretical predictions for the total heat transfer and the spatial heat flux profile for three-dimensional compact objec ts including corners or tips. We find qualitatively different scaling laws for conical shapes at small separations, and in contrast to a flat/slightly-curved object, a sharp cone exhibits a local emph{minimum} in the spatially resolved heat flux directly below the tip. The method we develop, in which a scattering-theory formulation of thermal transfer is combined with a boundary-element method for computing scattering matrices, can be applied to three-dimensional objects of arbitrary shape.

In this paper, phase correction and amplitude compensation are introduced to a previously developed mixed domain method (MDM), which is only accurate for modeling wave propagation in weakly heterogeneous media. Multiple reflections are also incorpora ted with the one-way model to improve the accuracy. The resulting model is denoted as the modified mixed-domain method (MMDM) and is numerically evaluated for its accuracy and efficiency using two distinct cases: a layered medium and a human skull. It is found that the MMDM is significantly more accurate than the MDM for strongly heterogeneous media, especially when the phase aberrating layer is roughly perpendicular to the acoustic beam. Additionally, convergence study suggests that the second-order reflection is sufficient for wave modeling in lossy biological media. The method developed in this work could be used to facilitate therapeutic ultrasound for treating brain-related diseases and disorders.

Numerical solutions of the cosmic-ray (CR) magneto-hydrodynamic equations are dogged by a powerful numerical instability, which arises from the constraint that CRs can only stream down their gradient. The standard cure is to regularize by adding arti ficial diffusion. Besides introducing ad-hoc smoothing, this has a significant negative impact on either computational cost or complexity and parallel scalings. We describe a new numerical algorithm for CR transport, with close parallels to two moment methods for radiative transfer under the reduced speed of light approximation. It stably and robustly handles CR streaming without any artificial diffusion. It allows for both isotropic and field-aligned CR streaming and diffusion, with arbitrary streaming and diffusion coefficients. CR transport is handled explicitly, while source terms are handled implicitly. The overall time-step scales linearly with resolution (even when computing CR diffusion), and has a perfect parallel scaling. It is given by the standard Courant condition with respect to a constant maximum velocity over the entire simulation domain. The computational cost is comparable to that of solving the ideal MHD equation. We demonstrate the accuracy and stability of this new scheme with a wide variety of tests, including anisotropic streaming and diffusion tests, CR modified shocks, CR driven blast waves, and CR transport in multi-phase media. The new algorithm opens doors to much more ambitious and hitherto intractable calculations of CR physics in galaxies and galaxy clusters. It can also be applied to other physical processes with similar mathematical structure, such as saturated, anisotropic heat conduction.

We provide a rationale for a new class of double-hybrid approximations introduced by Bremond and Adamo [J. Chem. Phys. 135, 024106 (2011)] which combine an exchange-correlation density functional with Hartree-Fock exchange weighted by $l$ and second- order M{o}ller-Plesset (MP2) correlation weighted by $l^3$. We show that this double-hybrid model can be understood in the context of the density-scaled double-hybrid model proposed by Sharkas et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 134, 064113 (2011)], as approximating the density-scaled correlation functional $E_c[n_{1/l}]$ by a linear function of $l$, interpolating between MP2 at $l=0$ and a density-functional approximation at $l=1$. Numerical results obtained with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof density functional confirms the relevance of this double-hybrid model.
Biots theory predicts the wave velocities of a saturated poroelastic granular medium from the elastic properties, density and geometry of its dry solid matrix and the pore fluid, neglecting the interaction between constituent particles and local flow . However, when the frequencies become high and the wavelengths comparable with particle size, the details of the microstructure start to play an important role. Here, a novel hydro-micromechanical numerical model is proposed by coupling the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with the discrete element method (DEM. The model allows to investigate the details of the particle-fluid interaction during propagation of elastic waves While the DEM is tracking the translational and rotational motion of each solid particle, the LBM can resolve the pore-scale hydrodynamics. Solid and fluid phases are two-way coupled through momentum exchange. The coupling scheme is benchmarked with the terminal velocity of a single sphere settling in a fluid. To mimic a pressure wave entering a saturated granular medium, an oscillating pressure boundary condition on the fluid is implemented and benchmarked with one-dimensional wave equations. Using a face centered cubic structure, the effects of input waveforms and frequencies on the dispersion relations are investigated. Finally, the wave velocities at various effective confining pressures predicted by the numerical model are compared with with Biots analytical solution, and a very good agreement is found. In addition to the pressure and shear waves, slow compressional waves are observed in the simulations, as predicted by Biots theory.
