Frequency offset modulation (FOM) is proposed as a new concept to provide both high energy efficiency and high spectral efficiency for communications. In the FOM system, an array of transmitters (TXs) is deployed and only one TX is activated for data transmission at any signaling time instance. The TX index distinguished by a very slight frequency offset among the entire occupied bandwidth is exploited to implicitly convey a bit unit without any power or signal radiation, saving the power and spectral resources. Moreover, the FOM is characterized by removing the stringent requirements on distinguishable spatial channels and perfect priori channel knowledge, while retaining the advantages of no inter-channel interference and no need of inter-antenna synchronization. In addition, a hybrid solution integrating the FOM and the spatial modulation is discussed to further improve the energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. Consequently, the FOM will be an enabling and green solution to support ever-increasing high-capacity data traffic in a variety of interdisciplinary fields.

The Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) constitutes one of the prominent technologies for the next 6-th Generation (6G) of wireless communications. It is envisioned to enhance signal coverage in cases where obstacles block the direct communicati on from Base Stations (BSs), and when high carrier frequencies are used that are sensitive to attenuation losses. In the literature, the exploitation of RISs is exclusively based on traditional coherent demodulation, which necessitates the availability of Channel State Information (CSI). Given the CSI, a multi-antenna BS or a dedicated controller computes the pre/post spatial coders and the RIS configuration. The latter tasks require significant amount of time and resources, which may not be affordable when the channel is time-varying or the CSI is not accurate enough. In this paper, we consider the uplink between a single-antenna user and a multi-antenna BS and present a novel RIS-empowered Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication system based on the differential phase shift keying, which is suitable for high noise and/or mobility scenarios. Considering both an idealistic and a realistic channel model, analytical expressions for the Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) and the Symbol Error Probability (SEP) of the proposed non-coherent RIS-empowered system are presented. Our extensive computer simulation results verify the accuracy of the presented analysis and showcase the proposed systems performance and superiority over coherent demodulation in different mobility and spatial correlation scenarios.
A virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system using the receiver-side cooperation with the compress-and-forward (CF) protocol, is an alternative to a point-to-point MIMO system, when a single receiver is not equipped with multiple a ntennas. It is evident that the practicality of CF cooperation will be greatly enhanced if an efficient source coding technique can be used at the relay. It is even more desirable that CF cooperation should not be unduly sensitive to carrier frequency offsets (CFOs). This paper presents a practical study of these two issues. Firstly, codebook designs of the Voronoi vector quantization (VQ) and the tree-structure vector quantization (TSVQ) to enable CF cooperation at the relay are described. A comparison in terms of the codebook design and encoding complexity is analyzed. It is shown that the TSVQ is much simpler to design and operate, and can achieve a favorable performance-complexity tradeoff. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates that CFO can lead to significant performance degradation for the virtual MIMO system. To overcome this, it is proposed to maintain clock synchronization and jointly estimate the CFO between the relay and the destination. This approach is shown to provide a significant performance improvement.

The light emitting diode (LED) nonlinearities distortion induced degradation in the performance of visible light communication (VLC) systems can be controlled by optimizing the DC bias point of the LED. In this paper, we theoretically analyze and exp erimentally demonstrate the effect of white LED DC bias on nonlinear modulation bandwidth and dynamic range of the VLC system. The linear dynamic range is enhanced by using series-connected LED chips, and the modulation bandwidth is extended to 40 MHz by post-equalization without using a blue filter. The experimental results well match the theoretical model of LED nonlinear modulation characteristics. The results show that the modulation bandwidth increases and saturates with an increase in LED DC bias current due to nonlinear effect of carrier lifetime and junction capacitance. The optimized DC-bias current that corresponds to the minimum BER increases with the increase of data rate. A 60-Mbps NRZ transmission can be achieved with BER threshold of 10-3 by properly adjusting LED DC bias point.
Towards next generation communications, Energy Efficiency (EE) attracts lots of attentions nowadays. Some innovative techniques have been proposed in prior literatures, especially the sleep mechanism of base station (BS). Yet how to sleep and when to sleep are still vague concepts. Another, most of the studies focus on the cellular section or core networks separately while integral and comprehensive version is neglected in prior literatures. In this paper, the integral optimization structure is studied based on cloud radio network (C-RAN) and information centric network (ICN) that raised latest combined with the sleep mode. The original C-RAN and ICN structures are amended in terms of reality application of sleep techniques. While adopting the sleep techniques both in core and cellular, apart from previous works, a transition smooth method that solve the current surge problems which is ignored before is further proposed. Based on the new method, it will be much more feasible to adopt the sleep techniques by knowing the appropriate occasion for transition between sleep and idle mode. Comprehensive computer based simulation results demonstrate that this integer proposal achieves better EE feature with negligible impact on quality of service (QoS) of user equipments (UEs).
Recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been considered as a promising candidate for accommodating various emerging communication and sensing applications in high-mobility environments. In this paper, we propose a nove l cross domain iterative detection algorithm to enhance the error performance of OTFS modulation. Different from conventional OTFS detection methods, the proposed algorithm applies basic estimation/detection approaches to both the time domain and delay-Doppler (DD) domain and iteratively updates the extrinsic information from two domains with the unitary transformation. In doing so, the proposed algorithm exploits the time domain channel sparsity and the DD domain symbol constellation constraints. We evaluate the estimation/detection error variance in each domain for each iteration and derive the state evolution to investigate the detection error performance. We show that the performance gain due to iterations comes from the non-Gaussian constellation constraint in the DD domain. More importantly, we prove the proposed algorithm can indeed converge and, in the convergence, the proposed algorithm can achieve almost the same error performance as the maximum-likelihood sequence detection even in the presence of fractional Doppler shifts. Furthermore, the computational complexity associated with the domain transformation is low, thanks to the structure of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) kernel. Simulation results are consistent with our analysis and demonstrate a significant performance improvement compared to conventional OTFS detection methods.
