This work studies the magnetic activity of the late-type giant 37 Com. This star belongs to the group of weak G-band stars that present very strong carbon deficiency in their photospheres. The paper is a part of a global investigation into the properties and origin of magnetic fields in cool giants. We use spectropolarimetric data, which allows the simultaneous measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field $B_{l}$, line activity indicators (H$alpha$, Ca,{sc ii} IRT, S-index) and radial velocity of the star, and consequently perform a direct comparison of their time variability. Mean Stokes V profiles are extracted using the least squares deconvolution (LSD) method. One map of the surface magnetic field of the star is reconstructed via the Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) inversion technique. A periodogram analysis is performed on our dataset and it reveals a rotation period of 111 days. We interpret this period to be the rotation period of 37 Com. The reconstructed magnetic map reveals that the structure of the surface magnetic field is complex and features a significant toroidal component. The time variability of the line activity indicators, radial velocity and magnetic field $B_{l}$ indicates a possible evolution of the surface magnetic structures in the period from 2008 to 2011. For completeness of our study, we use customized stellar evolutionary models suited to a weak G-band star. Synthetic spectra are also calculated to confirm the peculiar abundance of 37 Com. We deduce that 37 Com is a 6.5~$M_{odot}$ weak G-band star located in the Hertzsprung gap, whose magnetic activity is probably due to dynamo action.

We present a three-dimensional simulation of the corona of an FK Com-type rapidly rotating G giant using a magnetohydrodynamic model that was originally developed for the solar corona in order to capture the more realistic, non-potential coronal stru cture. We drive the simulation with surface maps for the radial magnetic field obtained from a stellar dynamo model of the FK Com system. This enables us to obtain the coronal structure for different field topologies representing different periods of time. We find that the corona of such an FK Com-like star, including the large scale coronal loops, is dominated by a strong toroidal component of the magnetic field. This is a result of part of the field being dragged by the radial outflow, while the other part remains attached to the rapidly rotating stellar surface. This tangling of the magnetic field,in addition to a reduction in the radial flow component, leads to a flattening of the gas density profile with distance in the inner part of the corona. The three-dimensional simulation provides a global view of the coronal structure. Some aspects of the results, such as the toroidal wrapping of the magnetic field, should also be applicable to coronae on fast rotators in general, which our study shows can be considerably different from the well-studied and well-observed solar corona. Studying the global structure of such coronae should also lead to a better understanding of their related stellar processes, such as flares and coronal mass ejections, and in particular, should lead to an improved understanding of mass and angular momentum loss from such systems.
We investigate the magnetic field at the surface of 48 red giants selected as promising for detection of Stokes V Zeeman signatures in their spectral lines. We use the spectropolarimeters Narval and ESPaDOnS to detect circular polarization within the photospheric absorption lines of our targets and use the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) method. We also measure the classical S-index activity indicator, and the stellar radial velocity. To infer the evolutionary status of our giants and to interpret our results, we use state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary models with predictions of convective turnover times. We unambiguously detect magnetic fields via Zeeman signatures in 29 of the 48 red giants in our sample. Zeeman signatures are found in all but one of the 24 red giants exhibiting signs of activity, as well as 6 out of 17 bright giant stars. The majority of the magnetically detected giants are either in the first dredge up phase or at the beginning of core He burning, i.e. phases when the convective turnover time is at a maximum: this corresponds to a magnetic strip for red giants in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. A close study of the 16 giants with known rotational periods shows that the measured magnetic field strength is tightly correlated with the rotational properties, namely to the rotational period and to the Rossby number Ro. Our results show that the magnetic fields of these giants are produced by a dynamo. Four stars for which the magnetic field is measured to be outstandingly strong with respect to that expected from the rotational period/magnetic field relation or their evolutionary status are interpreted as being probable descendants of magnetic Ap stars. In addition to the weak-field giant Pollux, 4 bright giants (Aldebaran, Alphard, Arcturus, eta Psc) are detected with magnetic field strength at the sub-gauss level.
Analyses of Galactic late O dwarfs (O8-O9.5V) raised the `weak wind problem: spectroscopic mass loss rates ($dot{M}$) are up to two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical values. We investigated the stellar and wind properties of Galactic lat e O giants (O8-O9.5III). We performed a spectroscopic analysis of nine O8-O9.5III stars in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical regions using the model atmosphere code CMFGEN. From the UV region, we found $dot{M}$ $sim$ $10^{-8}-10^{-9}$ $mathrm{M_odot}$ $mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ overall. This is lower by $sim 0.9 - 2.3$ dex than the predicted values based on the (global) conservation of energy in the wind. The mass-loss rates predicted from first principles, based on the moving reversing layer theory, agree better with our findings, but it fails to match the spectroscopic $dot{M}$ for the most luminous OB stars. The region of $log(L_star/L_odot) sim 5.2$ is critical for both sets of predictions in comparison with the spectroscopic mass-loss rates. CMFGEN models with the predicted $dot{M}$ (the former one) fail to reproduce the UV wind lines for all the stars of our sample. We reproduce the observed H$alpha$ profiles of four objects with our $dot{M}$ derived from the UV. Hence, low $dot{M}$ values (weak winds) are favored to fit the observations (UV + optical), but discrepancies between the UV and H$alpha$ diagnostics remain for some objects. Our results indicate weak winds beyond the O8-9.5V class, since the region of $log(L_star/L_odot) sim 5.2$ is indeed critical to the weak wind phenomenon. Since O8-O9.5III stars are more evolved than O8-9.5V, evolutionary effects do not seem to play a role in the onset of the weak wind phenomenon. These findings support that the $dot{M}$ (for low luminosity O stars) in use in the majority of modern stellar evolution codes must be severely overestimated up to the end of the H-burning phase.

We analyse medium-resolution spectra (Rsim 18000) of 19 late type dwarfs in order to determine vsini-s using synthetic rather than observational template spectra. For this purpose observational data around 2.2 $mu$m of stars with spectral classes fro m G8V to M9.5V were modelled. We find that the Na I (2.2062 and 2.2090 $mu$m) and $^{12}$CO 2-0 band features are modelled well enough to use for vsini determination without the need for a suitable observational template spectra. Within the limit of the resolution of our spectra, we use synthetic spectra templates to derive vsini values consistent with those derived in the optical regime using observed templates. We quantify the errors in our vsini determination due to incorrect choice of model parameters Teff, log $g$, $v_{rm micro}$, [Fe/H] or FWHM and show that they are typically less than 10 per cent. We note that the spectral resolution of our data(sim 16 km/s) limited this study to relatively fast rotators and that resolutions of 60000 will required to access most late-type dwarfs.
High spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of red giants in the globular cluster Omega Centauri are analysed for stellar parameters and chemical abundances of 15 elements including helium by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. The simultaneous abundance analysis of MgH and Mg lines adopting theoretical photospheres and a combination of He/H$-$ratios proved to be the only powerful probe to evaluate helium abundances of red giants cooler than 4400 K, wherein otherwise helium line transitions (He {scs I} 10830 and 5876 AA) present for a direct spectral line analysis. The impact of helium-enhanced model photospheres on the resulting abundance ratios are smaller than 0.15 dex, in agreement with past studies. The first indirect spectroscopic helium abundances measured in this paper for the most metal-rich cluster members reveal the discovery of seven He-enhanced giants ($Delta$$Y=+$0.15$pm$0.04), the largest such sample found spectroscopically to date. The average metallicity of $-$0.79$pm$0.06 dex and abundances for O, Na, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Ni, Ba, and La are consistent with values found for the red giant branch (RGB-a) and subgiant branch (SGB-a) populations of Omega Centauri, suggesting an evolutionary connection among samples. The He-enhancement in giants is associated with larger $s$-process elemental abundances, which correlate with Al and anticorrelate with O. These results support the formation of He-enhanced, metal-rich population of Omega Centauri out of the interstellar medium enriched with the ejecta of fast rotating massive stars, binaries exploding as supernovae and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars.
