The chimera state with co-existing coherent-incoherent dynamics has recently attracted a lot of attention due to its wide applicability. We investigate non-locally coupled identical chaotic maps with delayed interactions in the multiplex network framework and find that an interplay of delay and multiplexing brings about an enhanced or suppressed appearance of chimera state depending on the distribution as well as the parity of delay values in the layers. Additionally, we report a layer chimera state with an existence of one layer displaying coherent and another layer demonstrating incoherent dynamical evolution. The rich variety of dynamical behavior demonstrated here can be used to gain further insight into the real-world networks which inherently possess such multi-layer architecture with delayed interactions.

The largest eigenvalue of a network provides understanding to various dynamical as well as stability properties of the underlying system. We investigate an interplay of inhibition and multiplexing on the largest eigenvalue statistics of networks. Usi ng numerical experiments, we demonstrate that presence of the inhibitory coupling may lead to a very different behaviour of the largest eigenvalue statistics of multiplex networks than those of the isolated networks depending upon network architecture of the individual layer. We demonstrate that there is a transition from the Weibull to the Gumbel or to the Frechet distribution as networks are multiplexed. Furthermore, for denser networks, there is a convergence to the Gumbel distribution as network size increases indicating higher stability of larger systems.

The dynamics of populations is frequently subject to intrinsic noise. At the same time unknown interaction networks or rate constants can present quenched uncertainty. Existing approaches often involve repeated sampling of the quenched disorder and t hen running the stochastic birth-death dynamics on these samples. In this paper we take a different view, and formulate an effective jump process, representative of the ensemble of quenched interactions as a whole. Using evolutionary games with random payoff matrices as an example, we develop an algorithm to simulate this process, and we discuss diffusion approximations in the limit of weak intrinsic noise.
Chimera states are an example of intriguing partial synchronization patterns emerging in networks of identical oscillators. They consist of spatially coexisting domains of coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics. We analyze c himera states in networks of Van der Pol oscillators with hierarchical connectivities, and elaborate the role of time delay introduced in the coupling term. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of existence of coherent travelling waves. We demonstrate that by varying the time delay one can deliberately stabilize desired spatio-temporal patterns in the system.
We show that oscillation death as a specific type of oscillation suppression, which implies symmetry breaking, can be controlled by introducing time-delayed coupling. In particular, we demonstrate that time delay influences the stability of an inhomo geneous steady state, providing the opportunity to modulate the threshold for oscillation death. Additionally, we find a novel type of oscillation death representing a secondary bifurcation of an inhomogeneous steady state.
We investigate the stability of synchronized states in delay-coupled networks where synchronization takes place in groups of different local dynamics or in cluster states in networks with identical local dynamics. Using a master stability approach, w e find that the master stability function shows a discrete rotational symmetry depending on the number of groups. The coupling matrices that permit solutions on group or cluster synchronization manifolds show a very similar symmetry in their eigenvalue spectrum, which helps to simplify the evaluation of the master stability function. Our theory allows for the characterization of stability of different patterns of synchronized dynamics in networks with multiple delay times, multiple coupling functions, but also with multiple kinds of local dynamics in the networks nodes. We illustrate our results by calculating stability in the example of delay-coupled semiconductor lasers and in a model for neuronal spiking dynamics.
