High-bunch-charge photoemission electron-sources operating in a continuous wave (CW) mode are required for many advanced applications of particle accelerators, such as electron coolers for hadron beams, electron-ion colliders, and free-electron lasers (FELs). Superconducting RF (SRF) has several advantages over other electron-gun technologies in CW mode as it offers higher acceleration rate and potentially can generate higher bunch charges and average beam currents. A 112 MHz SRF electron photoinjector (gun) was developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to produce high-brightness and high-bunch-charge bunches for the Coherent electron Cooling Proof-of-Principle (CeC PoP) experiment. The gun utilizes a quarter-wave resonator (QWR) geometry for assuring beam dynamics, and uses high quantum efficiency (QE) multi-alkali photocathodes for generating electrons.

CW photoinjectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many areas of science and applications. They can establish the basis for a new generation of monochromatic X-ray free electron lasers, high brightness hadron beams, o r a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on the record-performing superconducting RF electron gun with $textrm{CsK}_{2}textrm{Sb}$ photocathode. The gun is generating high charge electron bunches (up to 10 nC/bunch) and low transverse emittances, while operating for months with a single photocathode. This achievement opens a new era in generating high-power beams with a very high average brightness.
Higher-order mode (HOM) based intra-cavity beam diagnostics has been proved effectively and conveniently in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerators. Our recent research shows that the beam harmonics in the bunch train excited HOM spectrum, which have much higher signal-to-noise ratio than the intrinsic HOM peaks, may also be useful for beam diagnostics. In this paper, we will present our study on bunch train excited HOMs, including the theoretic model and recent experiments carried out based on the DC-SRF photoinjector and SRF linac at Peking University.

Superconducting cavities with low RF frequencies and heavy damping of higher order modes (HOM) are desired for the main accelerator of High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a 6 GeV synchrotron light source promising ultralow emittance currently under con struction in Beijing. A compact 166.6 MHz superconducting cavity was proposed adopting a quarter-wave beta=1 geometry. Based on the successful development of a proof-of-principle cavity, a HOM-damped 166.6 MHz compact superconducting cavity was subsequently designed. A ferrite damper was installed on the beam pipe to reduce HOM impedance below the stringent threshold of coupled-bunch instabilities. Being compact, RF field heating on the cavity vacuum seal was carefully examined against quenching the NbTi flange. The cavity was later dressed with a helium vessel and the tuning mechanism was also realized. Excellent RF and mechanical properties were eventually achieved. Finally, the two-cavity string was designed to ensure smooth transitions among components and proper shielding of synchrotron light. This paper presents a complete design of a fully dressed HOM-damped low-frequency beta=1 superconducting cavity for HEPS.
High-gradient CW photo-injectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many sciences and applications. They can establish the basis for super-bright monochromatic X-ray free-electron lasers, super-bright hadron beams, nucl ear- waste transmutation or a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on our operation of a superconducting RF electron gun with a record-high accelerating gradient at the CsK2Sb photocathode (i.e. ~ 20 MV/m) generating a record-high bunch charge (i.e., 3 nC). We briefly describe the system and then detail our experimental results. This achievement opens new era in generating high-power electron beams with a very high brightness.
The CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) RF power source is based on a new scheme of electron pulse compression and bunch frequency multiplication using injection by transverse RF deflectors into an isochronous ring. In this paper, we describe the modifica tions needed in the present LEP Pre-Injector (LPI) complex at CERN in order to perform a low-charge test of the scheme. The design of the injector (including the new thermionic gun), of the modified linac, of the matched injection line, and of the isochronous ring lattice, are presented. The results of preliminary isochronicity measurements made on the present installation are also discussed.
