A prototype for a sampling calorimeter made out of cerium fluoride crystals interleaved with tungsten plates, and read out by wavelength-shifting fibres, has been exposed to beams of electrons with energies between 20 and 150 GeV, produced by the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator complex. The performance of the prototype is presented and compared to that of a Geant4 simulation of the apparatus. Particular emphasis is given to the response uniformity across the channel front face, and to the prototypes energy resolution.

A Cerium Fluoride crystal produced during early R&D studies for calorimetry at the CERN Large Hadron Collider was exposed to a 24 GeV/c proton fluence Phi_p=(2.78 +- 0.20) x 10EE13 cm-2 and, after one year of measurements tracking its recovery, to a fluence Phi_p=(2.12 +- 0.15) x 10EE14 cm-2. Results on proton-induced damage to the crystal and its spontaneous recovery after both irradiations are presented here, along with some new, complementary data on proton-damage in Lead Tungstate. A comparison with FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation results is performed and a qualitative understanding of high-energy damage mechanism is attempted.
A silicon-tungsten (Si-W) sampling calorimeter, consisting of 19 alternate layers of silicon pad detectors (individual pad area of 1~cm$^2$) and tungsten absorbers (each of one radiation length), has been constructed for measurement of electromagneti c showers over a large energy range. The signal from each of the silicon pads is readout using an ASIC with a dynamic range from $-300$~fC to $+500$~fC. Another ASIC with a larger dynamic range, $pm 600$~fC has been used as a test study. The calorimeter was exposed to pion and electron beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) to characterise the response to minimum ionising particles (MIP) and showers from electromagnetic (EM) interactions. Pion beams of 120 GeV provided baseline measurements towards the understanding of the MIP behaviour in the silicon pad layers, while electron beams of energy from 5 GeV to 60 GeV rendered detailed shower profiles within the calorimeter. The energy deposition in each layer, the longitudinal shower profile, and the total energy deposition have been measured for each incident electron energy. Linear behaviour of the total measured energy ($E$) with that of the incident particle energy ($E_{0}$) ensured satisfactory calorimetric performance. For a subset of the data sample, selected based on the cluster position of the electromagnetic shower of the incident electron, the dependence of the measured energy resolution on $E_{0}$ has been found to be $sigma/E = (15.36/sqrt{E_0(mathrm{GeV)}} oplus 2.0) %$.
The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) was installed on the ISS to measure high-energy cosmic-ray elemental spectra for the charge range $rm Z=1$ to 26. The ISS-CREAM instrument includes a tungst en scintillating-fiber calorimeter preceded by a carbon target for energy measurements. The carbon target induces hadronic interactions, and showers of secondary particles develop in the calorimeter. The energy deposition in the calorimeter is proportional to the particle energy. As a predecessor to ISS-CREAM, the balloon-borne CREAM instrument was successfully flown seven times over Antarctica for a cumulative exposure of 191 days. The CREAM calorimeter demonstrated its capability to measure energies of cosmic-ray particles, and the ISS-CREAM calorimeter is expected to have a similar performance. Before the launch, an engineering-unit calorimeter was shipped to CERN for calibration and performance tests. This beam test included position, energy, and angle scans of electron and pion beams together with a high-voltage scan for calibration and characterization. Additionally, an attenuation effect in the scintillating fibers was studied. In this paper, beam test results, including corrections for the attenuation effect, are presented.

In the context of developing a hadron calorimeter with extremely fine granularity for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms to the measurement of jet energies at a future lepton collider, we report on extensive tests of a small scale prototype calorimeter. The calorimeter contained up to 10 layers of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with 2560 1 times 1 cm2 readout pads, interleaved with steel absorber plates. The tests included both long-term Cosmic Ray data taking and measurements in particle beams, where the response to broadband muons and to pions and positrons with energies in the range of 1 - 16 GeV was established. Detailed measurements of the chambers efficiency as function of beam intensity have also been performed using 120 GeV protons at varying intensity. The data are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and to analytical calculations of the rate limitations.
Lead fluoride ($PbF_{2}$) crystals represent an excellent and relatively innovative choice for high resolution electromagnetic calorimeters with high granularity and fast timing. During the R&D stages of the Crilin calorimeter, three pbfd crystals si zed $5times 5 times 40 $ mm$^3$ were irradiated with $^{60}$Co photons up to $sim 4$ Mrad and with 14 MeV neutrons up to a $10^{13}$ n/cm$^2$ total fluence. Their loss in transmittance was evaluated at different steps of the photon and neutron irradiation campaign, and two optical absorption bands associated with the formation of colour centres were observed at $sim 270$ nm and $sim 400$ nm. Natural and thermal annealing in the dark, along with optical bleaching with 400 nm light, were performed on the irradiated specimens resulting in a partial recovery of their original optical characteristics.
