We present new nonlinear, time-dependent convective hydrodynamical models of RR Lyrae stars computed assuming a constant helium-to-metal enrichment ratio and a broad range in metal abundances (Z=0.0001--0.02). The stellar masses and luminosities adopted to construct the pulsation models were fixed according to detailed central He burning Horizontal Branch evolutionary models. The pulsation models cover a broad range in stellar luminosity and effective temperatures and the modal stability is investigated for both fundamental and first overtones. We predict the topology of the instability strip as a function of the metal content and new analytical relations for the edges of the instability strip in the observational plane. Moreover, a new analytical relation to constrain the pulsation mass of double pulsators as a function of the period ratio and the metal content is provided. We derive new Period-Radius-Metallicity relations for fundamental and first-overtone pulsators. They agree quite well with similar empirical and theoretical relations in the literature. From the predicted bolometric light curves, transformed into optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (JHK) bands, we compute the intensity-averaged mean magnitudes along the entire pulsation cycle and, in turn, new and homogenous metal-dependent (RIJHK) Period-Luminosity relations. Moreover, we compute new dual and triple band optical, optical--NIR and NIR Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity relations. Interestingly, we find that the optical Period-W(V,B-V) is independent of the metal content and that the accuracy of individual distances is a balance between the adopted diagnostics and the precision of photometric and spectroscopic datasets.

We present results of the analysis of 70 RR Lyrae stars located in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Combining spectroscopically determined metallicity of these stars from the literature with precise periods from the OGLE III catalogue and multi-epoch $K_{rm s}$ photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we derive a new near-infrared period-luminosity-metallicity (${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$) relation for RR Lyrae variables. In order to fit the relation we use a fitting method developed specifically for this study. The zero-point of the relation is estimated in two different ways: by assuming the value of the distance to the LMC and by using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) parallaxes of five RR Lyrae stars in the Milky Way (MW). The difference in distance moduli derived by applying these two approaches is $sim0.2$ mag. To investigate this point further we derive the ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation based on 23 MW RR Lyrae stars which had been analysed in Baade-Wesselink studies. We compared the derived ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relations for RR Lyrae stars in the MW and LMC. Slopes and zero-points are different, but still consistent within the errors. The shallow slope of the metallicity term is confirmed by both LMC and MW variables. The astrometric space mission Gaia is expected to provide a huge contribution to the determination of the RR Lyrae ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation, however, calculating an absolute magnitude from the trigonometric parallax of each star and fitting a ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation directly to period and absolute magnitude leads to biased results. We present a tool to achieve an unbiased solution by modelling the data and inferring the slope and zero-point of the relation via statistical methods.
We present newly-calibrated period-$phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars in the optical and, for the first time, mid-infrared. This works calibration dataset provides the largest and most comprehensive span of parameter spac e to date with homogeneous metallicities from $-3<textrm{[Fe/H]}<0.4$ and accurate Fourier parameters derived from 1980 ASAS-SN ($V$-band) and 1083 WISE (NEOWISE extension, $W1$ and $W2$ bands) RR Lyrae stars with well-sampled light curves. We compare our optical period-$phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] with those available in the literature and demonstrate that our relation minimizes systematic trends in the lower and higher metallicity range. Moreover, a direct comparison shows that our optical photometric metallicities are consistent with both those from high-resolution spectroscopy and globular clusters, supporting the good performance of our relation. We found an intrinsic scatter in the photometric metallicities (0.41 dex in the $V$-band and 0.50 dex in the infrared) by utilizing large calibration datasets covering a broad metallicity range. This scatter becomes smaller when optical and infrared bands are used together (0.37 dex). Overall, the relations derived in this work have many potential applications, including large-area photometric surveys with JWST in the infrared and LSST in the optical.

We present a catalog of 5,290 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with metallicities estimated from spectra of the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (LEGUE) and the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) surve ys. Nearly 70 per cent of them (3,642 objects) also have systemic radial velocities measured. Given the pulsating nature of RRLs, metallicity estimates are based on spectra of individual exposures, by matching them with the synthetic templates. The systemic radial velocities are measured by fitting the observed velocity as a function of phase assuming an empirical pulsating velocity template curve. Various tests show that our analyses yield metallicities with a typical precision of 0.20,dex and systemic radial velocities with uncertainties ranging from 5 to 21,km,s$^{-1}$ (depending on the number of radial velocity measurements available for a given star). Based on the well calibrated near-infrared $PM_{W1}Z$ or $PM_{K_{rm s}}Z$, and $M_{V}$-[Fe/H] relations, precise distances are derived for these RRLs. Finally, we include Gaia DR2 proper motions in our catalog. The catalog should be very useful for various Galactic studies, especially of the Galactic halo.
The serendipitous discovery by Preston and colleagues of the neutron-capture-enhanced RR Lyrae variable star TY Gru (a.k.a. CS 22881-071 in the HK survey of very metal-poor halo stars) has resulted in a growing set of initiatives on the chemical comp ositions of RR Lyrae stars and their application to broader topics in Galactic halo structure. Here we summarize the main aspects of our work on TY Gru, including a new discussion of our search for possible orbital motion of this star around a putative unseen companion. Then we describe a few of the results of a newly-completed intensive spectroscopic investigation of 10 additional field RR Lyr stars. We finish by outlining current projects that seek to contrast the atmospheres and chemical compositions of RRc stars with those of the RRab stars, and that employ a much larger RRab sample in a chemo-dynamical study of Galactic halo RR Lyr.
We collected over 6000 high-resolution spectra of four dozen field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables pulsating either in the fundamental (39 RRab) or in the first overtone (9 RRc) mode. We measured radial velocities (RVs) of four strong metallic and four Balm er lines along the entire pulsational cycle and derived RV amplitudes with accuracies better than 1$-$2~kmsec. The new amplitudes were combined with literature data for 23~RRab and 3~RRc stars (total sample 74 RRLs) which allowed us to investigate the variation of the Bailey diagram (photometric amplitude versus period) when moving from optical to mid-infrared bands and to re-cast the Bailey diagram in terms of RV amplitudes. We found that RV amplitudes for RRab are minimally affected by nonlinear phenomena (shocks) and multi-periodicity (Blazhko effect). The RV slope ($log P$--A(V$_r$)) when compared with the visual slope ($log P$--A($V$)) is shallower and the dispersion, at fixed period, decreases by a factor of two. We constructed homogeneous sets of Horizontal Branch evolutionary models and nonlinear, convective pulsation models of RRLs to constrain the impact of evolutionary effects on their pulsation properties. Evolution causes, on the Bailey diagram based on RV amplitudes, a modest variation in pulsation period and a large dispersion in amplitude. The broad dispersion in period of the Bailey diagram is mainly caused by variation in RRL intrinsic parameters (stellar mass, chemical composition). Empirical evidence indicates that RV amplitudes are an optimal diagnostic for tracing the mean effective temperature across the RRab instability strip.
