We study a family of frustrated anti-ferromagnetic spin-$S$ systems with a fully dimerized ground state. This state can be exactly obtained without the need to include any additional three-body interaction in the model. The simplest members of the family can be used as a building block to generate more complex geometries like spin tubes with a fully dimerized ground state. After present some numerical results about the phase diagram of these systems, we show that the ground state is robust against the inclusion of weak disorder in the couplings as well as several kinds of perturbations, allowing to study some other interesting models as a perturbative expansion of the exact one. A discussion on how to determine the dimerization region in terms of quantum information estimators is also presented. Finally, we explore the relation of these results with a the case of the a 4-leg spin tube which recently was proposed as the model for the description of the compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4$D$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$, delimiting the region of the parameter space where this model presents dimerization in its ground state.

We propose to utilize the sub-system fidelity (SSF), defined by comparing a pair of reduced density matrices derived from the degenerate ground states, to identify and/or characterize symmetry protected topological (SPT) states in one-dimensional int eracting many-body systems. The SSF tells whether two states are locally indistinguishable (LI) by measurements within a given sub-system. Starting from two polar states (states that could be distinguished on either edge), the other combinations of these states can be mapped onto a Bloch sphere. We prove that a pair of orthogonal states on the equator of the Bloch sphere are LI, independently of whether they are SPT states or cat states (symmetry-preserving states by linear combinations of states that break discrete symmetries). Armed with this theorem, we provide a scheme to construct zero-energy exitations that swap the LI states. We show that the zero mode can be located anywhere for cat states, but is localized near the edge for SPT states. We also show that the SPT states are LI in a finite fraction of the bulk (excluding the two edges), whereas the symmetry-breaking states are distinguishable. This can be used to pinpoint the transition from SPT states to the symmetry-breaking states.
We study spontaneous dimerization and emergent criticality in a spin-3/2 chain with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_1$, next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ and three-site $J_3$ interactions. In the absence of three-site interaction $J_3$, we provide ev idence that the model undergoes a remarkable sequence of three phase transitions as a function of $J_2/J_1$, going successively through a critical commesurate phase, a partially dimerized gapped phase, a critical floating phase with quasi-long-range incommensurate order, to end up in a fully dimerized phase at very large $J_2/J_1$. In the field theory language, this implies that the coupling constant of the marginal operator responsible for dimerization changes sign three times. For large enough $J_3$, the fully dimerized phase is stabilized for all $J_2$, and the phase transitions between the critical phases and this phase are both Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) SU(2)$_3$ along part of the boundary and turn first order at some point due to the presence of a marginal operator in the WZW SU(2)$_3$ model. By contrast, the transition between the two dimerized phase is always first order, and the phase transitions between the partially dimerized phase and the critical phases are Kosterlitz-Thouless. Finally, we discuss the intriguing spin-1/2 edge states that emerge in the partially dimerized phase for even chains. Unlike their counterparts in the spin-1 chain, they are not confined and disappear upon increasing $J_2$ in favour of a reorganization of the dimerization pattern.
Dimerized quantum spin systems may appear under several circumstances, e.g by a modulation of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in space, or in frustrated quantum antiferromagnets. In general, such systems display a quantum phase transition to a Neel state as a function of a suitable coupling constant. We present here two path-integral formulations appropriate for spin $S=1/2$ dimerized systems. The first one deals with a description of the dimers degrees of freedom in an SO(4) manifold, while the second one provides a path-integral for the bond-operators introduced by Sachdev and Bhatt. The path-integral quantization is performed using the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism for constrained systems, such that the measures and constraints that result from the algebra of the operators is provided in both cases. As an example we consider a spin-Peierls chain, and show how to arrive at the corresponding field-theory, starting with both a SO(4) formulation and bond-operators.
We explore a variational Ansatz for lattice quantum systems -- named long-range entangled-plaquette state -- in which pairs of clusters of adjacent lattice sites are correlated at any distance. The explicit scale-free structure of correlations built in this wave function makes it fit to reproduce critical states with long-range entanglement. The use of complex weights in the Ansatz allows for an efficient optimization of non positive definite states in a fully variational fashion, namely without any additional bias (arising emph{e.g.} from pre-imposed sign structures) beyond that imposed by the parametrization of the state coefficients. These two features render the Ansatz particularly appropriate for the study of quantum phase transitions in frustrated systems. Moreover, the Ansatz can be systematically improved by increasing the long range plaquette size, as well as by the inclusion of even larger adjacent-site plaquettes. We validate our Ansatz in the case of the XX and Heisenberg chain, and further apply it to the case of a simple, yet paradigmatic model of frustration, namely the $J_1-J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. For this model we provide clear evidence that our trial wave function faithfully describes both the short-range physics (particularly in terms of ground state energy) and the long-range one expressed by the Luttinger exponent, and the central charge of the related conformal field theory, which govern the decay of correlations and the scaling of the entanglement entropy, respectively. Finally we successfully reproduce the incommensurate correlations developing in the system at strong frustration, as a result of the flexible representation of sign (phase) structures via complex weights.
We present detailed calculations of the magnetic ground state properties of Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ in an applied magnetic field, and compare our results with recent experiments. The material is described by a spin Hamiltonian, determined with precision in hi gh field measurements, in which the main interaction is antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange between neighboring spins on an anisotropic triangular lattice. An additional, weak Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction introduces easy-plane anisotropy, so that behavior is different for transverse and longitudinal field directions. We determine the phase diagram as a function of field strength for both field directions at zero temperature, using a classical approximation as a first step. Building on this, we calculate the effect of quantum fluctuations on the ordering wavevector and components of the ordered moments, using both linear spinwave theory and a mapping to a Bose gas which gives exact results when the magnetization is almost saturated. Many aspects of the experimental data are well accounted for by this approach.
