We analyze the mean squared displacement of a Brownian particle in a medium with a spatially varying local diffusivity which is assumed to be periodic. When the system is asymptotically diffusive the mean squared displacement, characterizing the dispersion in the system, is, at late times, a linear function of time. A Kubo type formula is given for the mean squared displacement which allows the recovery of some known results for the effective diffusion constant $D_e$ in a direct way, but also allows an understanding of the asymptotic approach to the diffusive limit. In particular, as well as as computing the slope of a linear fit to the late time mean squared displacement, we find a formula for the constant where the fit intersects the y axis.

A Langevin process diffusing in a periodic potential landscape has a time dependent diffusion constant which means that its average mean squared displacement (MSD) only becomes linear at late times. The long time, or effective diffusion constant, can be estimated from the slope of a linear fit of the MSD at late times. Due to the cross over between a short time microscopic diffusion constant, which is independent of the potential, to the effective late time diffusion constant, a linear fit of the MSD will not in general pass through the origin and will have a non-zero constant term. Here we address how to compute the constant term and provide explicit results for Brownian particles in one dimension in periodic potentials. We show that the constant is always positive and that at low temperatures it depends on the curvature of the minimum of the potential. For comparison we also consider the same question for the simpler problem of a symmetric continuous time random walk in discrete space. Here the constant can be positive or negative and can be used to determine the variance of the hopping time distribution.

Diffusion processes are studied theoretically for the case where the diffusion coefficient is itself a time and position dependent random function. We investigate how inhomogeneities and fluctuations of the diffusion coefficient affect the transport using a perturbative approach, with a special attention to the time scaling of the second moment. We show that correlated disorder can lead to anomalous transport and superdiffusion.
We study the linear response of interacting active Brownian particles in an external potential to simple shear flow. Using a path integral approach, we derive the linear response of any state observable to initiating shear in terms of correlation fun ctions evaluated in the unperturbed system. For systems and observables which are symmetric under exchange of the $x$ and $y$ coordinates, the response formula can be drastically simplified to a form containing only state variables in the corresponding correlation functions (compared to the generic formula containing also time derivatives). In general, the shear couples to the particles by translational as well as rotational advection, but in the aforementioned case of $xy$ symmetry only translational advection is relevant in the linear regime. We apply the response formulas analytically in solvable cases and numerically in a specific setup. In particular, we investigate the effect of a shear flow on the morphology and the stress of $N$ confined active particles in interaction, where we find that the activity as well as additional alignment interactions generally increase the response.
We discuss the situations under which Brownian yet non-Gaussian (BnG) diffusion can be observed in the model of a particles motion in a random landscape of diffusion coefficients slowly varying in space. Our conclusion is that such behavior is extrem ely unlikely in the situations when the particles, introduced into the system at random at $t=0$, are observed from the preparation of the system on. However, it indeed may arise in the case when the diffusion (as described in Ito interpretation) is observed under equilibrated conditions. This paradigmatic situation can be translated into the model of the diffusion coefficient fluctuating in time along a trajectory, i.e. into a kind of the diffusing diffusivity model.
The equilibrium properties of a system of passive diffusing particles in an external magnetic field are unaffected by the Lorentz force. In contrast, active Brownian particles exhibit steady-state phenomena that depend on both the strength and the po larity of the applied magnetic field. The intriguing effects of the Lorentz force, however, can only be observed when out-of-equilibrium density gradients are maintained in the system. To this end, we use the method of stochastic resetting on active Brownian particles in two dimensions by resetting them to the line $x=0$ at a constant rate and periodicity in the $y$ direction. Under stochastic resetting, an active system settles into a nontrivial stationary state which is characterized by an inhomogeneous density distribution, polarization and bulk fluxes perpendicular to the density gradients. We show that whereas for a uniform magnetic field the properties of the stationary state of the active system can be obtained from its passive counterpart, novel features emerge in the case of an inhomogeneous magnetic field which have no counterpart in passive systems. In particular, there exists an activity-dependent threshold rate such that for smaller resetting rates, the density distribution of active particles becomes non-monotonic. We also study the mean first-passage time to the $x$ axis and find a surprising result: it takes an active particle more time to reach the target from any given point for the case when the magnetic field increases away from the axis. The theoretical predictions are validated using Brownian dynamics simulations.
