Motivated by the recent synthesis of $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ -- a spin-orbit entangled $j=1/2$ Mott insulator with a three-dimensional lattice structure of the Ir$^{4+}$ ions -- we consider generalizations of the Kitaev model believed to capture some of the microscopic interactions between the Iridium moments on various trivalent lattice structures in three spatial dimensions. Of particular interest is the so-called hyperoctagon lattice -- the premedial lattice of the hyperkagome lattice, for which the ground state is a gapless quantum spin liquid where the gapless Majorana modes form an extended two-dimensional Majorana Fermi surface. We demonstrate that this Majorana Fermi surface is inherently protected by lattice symmetries and discuss possible instabilities. We thus provide the first example of an analytically tractable microscopic model of interacting SU(2) spin-1/2 degrees of freedom in three spatial dimensions that harbors a spin liquid with a two-dimensional spinon Fermi surface.

The issue on the effect of interactions in topological states concerns not only interacting topological phases but also novel symmetry-breaking phases and phase transitions. Here we study the interaction effect on Majorana zero modes (MZMs) bound to a square vortex lattice in two-dimensional (2D) topological superconductors. Under the neutrality condition, where single-body hybridization between MZMs is prohibited by an emergent symmetry, a minimal square-lattice model for MZMs can be faithfully mapped to a quantum spin model, which has no sign problem in the world-line quantum Monte Carlo simulation. Guided by an insight from a further duality mapping, we demonstrate that the interaction induces a Majorana stripe state, a gapped state spontaneously breaking lattice translational and rotational symmetries, as opposed to the previously conjectured topological quantum criticality. Away from neutrality, a mean-field theory suggests a quantum critical point induced by hybridization.

The spin texture of the metallic two-dimensional electron system (root3 x root3)-Au/Ge(111) is revealed by fully three-dimensional spin-resolved photoemission, as well as by density functional calculations. The large hexagonal Fermi surface, generate d by the Au atoms, shows a significant splitting due to spin-orbit interactions. The planar components of the spin exhibit helical character, accompanied by a strong out-of-plane spin component with alternating signs along the six Fermi surface sections. Moreover, in-plane spin rotations towards a radial direction are observed close to the hexagon corners. Such a threefold-symmetric spin pattern is not described by the conventional Rashba model. Instead, it reveals an interplay with Dresselhaus-like spin-orbit effects as a result of the crystalline anisotropies.
Triangular lattice of rare-earth ions with interacting effective spin-$1/2$ local moments is an ideal platform to explore the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, crystal electric fields, and geometric al frustration. The Yb delafossites, NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch=O, S, Se) with Yb ions forming a perfect triangular lattice, have been suggested to be candidates for QSLs. Previous thermodynamics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin rotation measurements on NaYbCh$_2$ have supported the suggestion of the QSL ground states. The key signature of a QSL, the spin excitation continuum, arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, has not been observed. Here we perform both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as detailed thermodynamic measurements on high-quality single-crystalline NaYbSe$_2$ samples to confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 40 mK, and further reveal a clear signature of magnetic excitation continuum extending from 0.1 to 2.5 meV. The comparison between the structure of the magnetic excitation spectra and the theoretical expectation from the spinon continuum suggests that the ground state of NaYbSe$_2$ is a QSL with a spinon Fermi surface.
We present a three-dimensional cubic lattice spin model, anisotropic in the $hat{z}$ direction, that exhibits fracton topological order. The latter is a novel type of topological order characterized by the presence of immobile pointlike excitations, named fractons, residing at the corners of an operator with two-dimensional support. As other recent fracton models, ours exhibits a subextensive ground state degeneracy: On an $L_xtimes L_ytimes L_z$ three-torus, it has a $2^{2L_z}$ topological degeneracy, and an additional non-topological degeneracy equal to $2^{L_xL_y-2}$. The fractons can be combined into composite excitations that move either in a straight line along the $hat{z}$ direction, or freely in the $xy$ plane at a given height $z$. While our model draws inspiration from the toric code, we demonstrate that it cannot be adiabatically connected to a layered toric code construction. Additionally, we investigate the effects of imposing open boundary conditions on our system. We find zero energy modes on the surfaces perpendicular to either the $hat{x}$ or $hat{y}$ directions, and their absence on the surfaces normal to $hat{z}$. This result can be explained using the properties of the two kinds of composite two-fracton mobile excitations.

We present numerical evidence for the presence of a finite-temperature ($T$) phase transition separating paramagnet and quantum spin liquid in a three-dimensional variant of the Kitaev model defined on a hyperhoneycomb lattice in the limit of strong anisotropy; the model is mapped onto an effective Ising-type model, where elementary excitations consist of closed loops of flipped Ising-type variables. Analyzing this effective model by Monte Carlo simulation, we find a phase transition from quantum spin liquid to paramagnet at a finite critical temperature $T_c$. We also compute the magnetic properties in terms of the original quantum spins. We find that the magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad hump above $T_c$, while it obeys the Curie law at high $T$ and approaches a nonzero Van Vleck-type constant at low $T$. Although the susceptibility changes continuously at $T_c$, its $T$ derivative shows critical divergence at $T_c$. We also clarify that the dynamical spin correlation function is momentum independent but shows quantized peaks corresponding to the discretized excitations. Although the phase transition accompanies no apparent symmetry breaking in terms of the Ising-type variables as well as the original quantum spins, we characterize it from a topological viewpoint. We find that, by defining the flux density for loops of the Ising-type variables, the transition is interpreted as the one occurring from the zero-flux quantum spin liquid to the nonzero-flux paramagnet; the latter has a Coulombic nature due to the local constraints. The role of global constraints on the Ising-type variables is examined in comparison with the results in the two-dimensional loop model. A correspondence of our model to the Ising model on a diamond lattice is also discussed. A possible relevance of our results to the recently-discovered hyperhoneycomb compound, $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, is mentioned.
