We present the results of a deep ZYJ near-infrared survey of 13.5 square degrees in the Upper Scorpius (USco) OB association. We photometrically selected ~100 cluster member candidates with masses in the range 30-5 Jupiters, according to state-of-the-art evolutionary models. We identified 67 ZYJ candidates as bona-fide members, based on complementary photometry and astrometry. We also extracted five candidates detected with VISTA at YJ-only. One is excluded using deep optical z-band imaging, while two are likely non-members, and three remain as potential members. We conclude that the USco mass function is more likely decreasing in the planetary-mass regime (although a flat mass function cannot yet be discarded), consistent with surveys in other regions.

We aim at identifying very low-mass isolated planetary-mass member candidates in the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius (145 pc; 5-10 Myr), to constrain the form and shape of the luminosity function and mass spectrum in this regime. We conducted a deep multi-band ($Y$=21.2, $J$=20.5, $Z$=22.0 mag) photometric survey of six square degrees in the central region of Upper Scorpius. We extend the current sequence of astrometric and spectroscopic members by about two magnitudes in $Y$ and one magnitude in $J$, reaching potentially T-type free-floating members in the association with predicted masses below 5 Jupiter masses, well into the planetary-mass regime. We extracted a sample of 57 candidates in this area and present infrared spectroscopy confirming two of them as young L-type members with characteristic spectral features of 10 Myr-old brown dwarfs. Among the 57 candidates, we highlight 10 new candidates fainter than the coolest members previously confirmed spectroscopically. We do not see any obvious sign of decrease in the mass spectrum of the association, suggesting that star processes can form substellar objects with masses down to 4-5 Jupiter masses.

We present the results of photometric and spectroscopic follow-ups of the lowest mass member candidates in the nearest OB association, Upper Scorpius (5-10 Myr; 145+/-17 pc), with the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC) and European Southern Observator y (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). We confirm the membership of the large majority (>80%) of the candidates selected originally photometrically and astrometrically based on their spectroscopic features, weak equivalent widths of gravity-sensitive doublets, and radial velocities. Confirmed members follow a sequence over a wide magnitude range (J=17.0-19.3 mag) in several colour-magnitude diagrams with optical, near-, and mid-infrared photometry, and have near-infrared spectral types in the L1-L7 interval with likely masses below 15 Jupiter masses. We find that optical spectral types tend to be earlier than near-infrared spectral types by a few subclasses for spectral types later than M9. We investigate the behaviour of spectral indices defined in the literature as a function of spectral type and gravity by comparison with values reported in the literature for young and old dwarfs. We also derive effective temperatures in the 1900-1600K from fits of synthetic model-atmosphere spectra to the observed photometry but we caution the procedure carries large uncertainties. We determine bolometric corrections for young L dwarfs with ages of ~5-10 Myr (Upper Sco association) and find them similar in the J-band but larger by 0.1-0.4 mag in the K-band with respect to field L dwarfs. Finally, we discovered two faint young L dwarfs, VISTAJ1607-2146 (L4.5) and VISTAJ1611-2215 (L5) that have H$alpha$ emission and possible flux excesses at 4.5 microns, pointing towards the presence of accretion from a disk onto the central objects of mass below ~15 Jupiter masses at the age of 5-10 Myr.
We present preliminary trigonometric parallaxes of 184 late-T and Y dwarfs using observations from Spitzer (143), USNO (18), NTT (14), and UKIRT (9). To complete the 20-pc census of $ge$T6 dwarfs, we combine these measurements with previously publish ed trigonometric parallaxes for an additional 44 objects and spectrophotometric distance estimates for another 7. For these 235 objects, we estimate temperatures, sift into five 150K-wide $T_{rm eff}$ bins covering the range 300-1050K, determine the completeness limit for each, and compute space densities. To anchor the high-mass end of the brown dwarf mass spectrum, we compile a list of early- to mid-L dwarfs within 20 pc. We run simulations using various functional forms of the mass function passed through two different sets of evolutionary code to compute predicted distributions in $T_{rm eff}$. The best fit of these predictions to our L, T, and Y observations is a simple power-law model with $alpha approx 0.6$ (where $dN/dM propto M^{-alpha}$), meaning that the slope of the field substellar mass function is in rough agreement with that found for brown dwarfs in nearby star forming regions and young clusters. Furthermore, we find that publish
A determination of the initial mass function (IMF) of the current, incomplete census of the 10 Myr-old TW Hya association (TWA) is presented. This census is built from a literature compilation supplemented with new spectra and 17 new radial velocitie s, as well as a re-analysis of Hipparcos data that confirmed HR 4334 (A2Vn) as a member. Though the dominant uncertainty in the IMF remains census incompleteness, a detailed statistical treatment is carried out to make the IMF determination independent of binning, while accounting for small number statistics. The currently known high-likelihood members are fitted by a log-normal distribution with a central mass of $0.21^{+0.11}_{-0.06}$ $M_{odot}$ and a characteristic width of $0.8^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ dex in the 12 $M_{rm Jup}$-2 $M_{odot}$ range, whereas a Salpeter power law with $alpha = 2.2^{+1.1}_{-0.5}$ best describes the IMF slope in the $0.1-2$ $M_{odot}$ range. This characteristic width is higher than other young associations, which may be due to incompleteness in the current census of low-mass TWA stars. A tentative overpopulation of isolated planetary-mass members similar to 2MASS J11472421-2040204 and 2MASS J11193254-1137466 is identified: this indicates that there might be as many as $10^{+13}_{-5}$ similar members of TWA with hot-start model-dependent masses estimated at $sim$ 5-7 $M_{rm Jup}$, most of which would be too faint to be detected in 2MASS. Our new radial velocity measurements corroborate the membership of 2MASS J11472421-2040204, and secure TWA 28 (M8.5$gamma$), TWA 29 (M9.5$gamma$) and TWA 33 (M4.5e) as members. The discovery of 2MASS J09553336-0208403, a young L7-type interloper unrelated to TWA, is also presented.
To understand how planetary spin evolves and traces planet formation processes, we measure rotational line broadening in eight planetary-mass objects (PMOs) of various ages (1--800 Myr) using near-infrared high-resolution spectra from NIRSPEC/Keck. C ombining these with published rotation rates, we compile 27 PMO spin velocities, 16 of which derive from our NIRSPEC/Keck program. Our data are consistent with spin velocities $v$ scaling with planetary radius $R$ as $v propto 1/R$. We conclude that spin angular momentum is conserved as objects cool and contract over the sampled age range. The PMOs in our sample spin at rates that are approximately an order of magnitude below their break-up values, consistent with the hypothesis that they were spun down by magnetized circum-PMO disks (CPDs) during the formation era at ages $lesssim$ a few Myr. There is a factor of 4--5 variation in spin velocity that has yet to be understood theoretically. It also remains to be seen whether spin evolves on timescales $gtrsim$ 1 Gyr for PMOs, as it does for stars and high-mass brown dwarfs emitting magnetized winds.
