Employing the recently developed self-consistent variational basis generation scheme, we have investigated the bipolaron-bipolaron interaction within the purview of Holstein-Hubbard and the extended-Holstein-Hubbard (F2H) model on a discrete one-dimensional lattice. The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method has also been used for the Holstein-Hubbard model. We have shown that there exists no bipolaron-bipolaron attraction in the Holstein-Hubbard model. In contrast, we have obtained clear-cut bipolaron-bipolaron attraction in the F2H model. Composite bipolarons are formed above a critical electron-phonon coupling strength, which can survive the finite Hubbard $U$ effect. We have constructed the phase diagram of F2H polarons and bipolarons, and discussed the phase separation in terms of the formation of composite bipolarons.

The electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction remains of great interest in condensed matter physics and plays a vital role in realizing superconductors, charge-density-waves (CDW), and polarons. We study the two-dimensional Holstein model for e-ph coupling using determinant quantum Monte Carlo across a wide range of its phase diagram as a function of temperature, electron density, dimensionless e-ph coupling strength, and the adiabatic ratio of the phonon frequency to the Fermi energy. We describe the behavior of the CDW correlations, the competition between superconducting and CDW orders and polaron formation, the optimal conditions for superconductivity, and the transition from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime. Superconductivity is optimized at intermediate e-ph coupling strength and intermediate electron density, and the superconducting correlations increase monotonically with phonon frequency. The global maximum for superconductivity in the Holstein model occurs at large phonon frequency, the limit where an attractive Hubbard model effectively describes the physics.

The polaron formation is investigated in the intermediate regime of the Holstein model by using an exact diagonalization technique for the one-dimensional infinite lattice. The numerical results for the electron and phonon propagators are compared wi th the nonadiabatic weak- and strong-coupling perturbation theories, as well as with the harmonic adiabatic approximation. A qualitative explanation of the crossover regime between the self-trapped and free-particle-like behaviors, not well-understood previously, is proposed. It is shown that a fine balance of nonadiabatic and adiabatic contributions determines the motion of small polarons, making them light. A comprehensive analysis of spatially and temporally resolved low-frequency lattice correlations that characterize the translationally invariant polaron states is derived. Various behaviors of the polaronic deformation field, ranging from classical adiabatic for strong couplings to quantum nonadiabatic for weak couplings, are discussed.
We review numerical results for ground-state and spectral properties of the single-electron Holstein model.
We study Holstein polarons in three-dimensional anisotropic materials. Using a variational exact diagonalization technique we provide highly accurate results for the polaron mass and polaron radius. With these data we discuss the differences between polaron formation in dimension one and three, and at small and large phonon frequency. Varying the anisotropy we demonstrate how a polaron evolves from a one-dimensional to a three-dimensional quasiparticle. We thereby resolve the issue of polaron stability in quasi-one-dimensional substances and clarify to what extent such polarons can be described as one-dimensional objects. We finally show that even the local Holstein interaction leads to an enhancement of anisotropy in charge carrier motion.
We analyze the quantum phase diagram of the Holstein-Hubbard model using an asymptotically exact strong-coupling expansion. We find all sorts of interesting phases including a pair-density wave (PDW), a charge 4e (and even a charge 6e) superconductor , regimes of phase separation, and a variety of distinct charge-density-wave (CDW), spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting regimes. We chart the crossovers that occur as a function of the degree of retardation, i.e. the ratio of characteristic phonon frequency to the strength of interactions.
