Be X-ray binaries are among the best known transient high-energy sources. Their outbursts are commonly classified into a simple scheme of normal and giant outbursts, but a closer look shows that actual outbursts do not always follow this simple scheme. Recent data show a variety of properties, like pre-flares, shifts of the outburst peaks with respect to the periastron, multi-peaked outbursts etc. We present results from a systematic study of a large number of outbursts monitored by various space missions, comparing outburst properties and their relation to system parameters and current theoretical understanding.

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Be/X-ray binary pulsar SXP6.85 = XTE J0103-728 underwent a large Type II outburst beginning on 2008 August 10. The source was consistently seen for the following 20 weeks (MJD = 54688 - 54830). We present X-ray timing and spectroscopic analysis of the source as part of our ongoing Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) monitoring campaign and INTEGRAL key programme monitoring the SMC and 47 Tuc. A comparison with the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) III light curve of the Be counterpart shows the X-ray outbursts from this source coincide with times of optical maximum. We attribute this to the circumstellar disk increasing in size, causing mass accretion onto the neutron star. Ground based IR photometry and H-alpha spectroscopy obtained during the outburst are used as a measure of the size of the circumstellar disk and lend support to this picture. In addition, folded RXTE light curves seem to indicate complex changes in the geometry of the accretion regions on the surface of the neutron star, which may be indicative of an inhomogeneous density distribution in the circumstellar material causing a variable accretion rate onto the neutron star. Finally, the assumed inclination of the system and H-alpha equivalent width measurements are used to make a simplistic estimate of the size of the circumstellar disk.
Giant X-ray outbursts, with luminosities of about $ 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, are observed roughly every 5 years from the nearby Be/pulsar binary 1A 0535+262. In this article, we present observations of the source with VERITAS at very-high energies (VHE ; E$>$100 GeV) triggered by the X-ray outburst in December 2009. The observations started shortly after the onset of the outburst, and they provided comprehensive coverage of the episode, as well as the 111-day binary orbit. No VHE emission is evident at any time. We also examined data from the contemporaneous observations of 1A 0535+262 with the Fermi/LAT at high energy photons (HE; E$>$0.1 GeV) and failed to detect the source at GeV energies. The X-ray continua measured with the Swift/XRT and the RXTE/PCA can be well described by the combination of blackbody and Comptonized emission from thermal electrons. Therefore, the gamma-ray and X-ray observations suggest the absence of a significant population of non-thermal particles in the system. This distinguishes 1A~0535+262 from those Be X-ray binaries (such as PSR B1259--63 and LS I +61$^{circ}$303) that have been detected at GeV--TeV energies. We discuss the implications of the results on theoretical models.
We present simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud Be/XRB IGR J01217-7257 (=SXP 2.16) during outbursts in 2014, 2015 and 2016. We also present the results of RXTE observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud during whi ch the source was initially discovered with a periodicity of 2.1652$pm$0.0001 seconds which we associate with the spin period of the neutron star. A systematic temporal analysis of long term Swift/BAT data reveals a periodic signal of 82.5$pm$0.7 days, in contrast with a similar analysis of long base line OGLE I-band light curves which reveals an 83.67$pm$0.05 days also found in this work. Interpreting the longer X-ray periodicity as indicative of binary motion of the neutron star, we find that outbursts detected by INTEGRAL and Swift between 2014 and 2016 are consistent with Type I outbursts seen in Be/XRBs, occurring around periastron. Comparing these outbursts with the OGLE data, we see a clear correlation between outburst occurrence and increasing I-band flux. A periodic analysis of subdivisions of OGLE data reveals three epochs during which short periodicities of $sim$1 day are significantly detected which we suggest are non-radial pulsations (NRPs) of the companion star. These seasons immediately precede those exhibiting clear outburst behaviour, supporting the suggested association between the NRPs, decretion disk growth and the onset of Type I outbursts.
Aims: We present a study of the Be/X-ray binary system V 0332+53 with the main goal of characterizing its behavior mainly during the intermediate-luminosity X-ray event on 2008. In addition, we aim to contribute to the understanding of the global beh avior of the donor companion by including optical data from our dedicated campaign starting on 2006. Methods: V 0332+53 was observed by RXTE and Swift during the decay of the intermediate-luminosity X-ray outburst of 2008, as well as with Suzaku before the rising of the third normal outburst of the 2010 series. In addition, we present recent data from the Spanish ground-based astronomical observatories of El Teide (Tenerife), Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma), and Sierra Nevada (Granada), and since 2006 from the Turkish TUBITAK National Observatory (Antalya). We have performed temporal analyses to investigate the transient behaviour of this system during several outbursts. Results: Our optical study revealed that continuous mass ejection episodes from the Be star have been taking place since 2006 and another one is currently ongoing. The broad-band 1-60 keV X-ray spectrum of the neutron star during the decay of the 2008 outburst was well fitted with standard phenomenological models, enhanced by an absorption feature of unknown origin at about 10 keV and a narrow iron K-alpha fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. For the first time in V 0332+53 we tentatively see an increase of the cyclotron line energy with increasing flux (although further and more sensitive observations are needed to confirm this). Regarding the fast aperiodic variability, we detect a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) at 227+-9 mHz only during the lowest luminosities. The latter fact might indicate that the inner regions surrounding the magnetosphere are more visible during the lowest flux states.
We present spectral and timing analysis of NuSTAR observations of RX J0520.5$-$6932 in the 3-79 keV band collected during its outburst in January 2014. The target was observed on two epochs and we report the detection of a cyclotron resonant scatteri ng feature with central energies of $E_mathrm{CRSF} = 31.3_{-0.7}^{+0.8}$ keV and $31.5_{-0.6}^{+0.7}$ keV during the two observations, respectively, corresponding to a magnetic field of $B approx 2 times10^{12}$ G. The 3-79 keV luminosity of the system during the two epochs assuming a nominal distance of 50 kpc was $3.667pm0.007times 10^{38},mathrm{erg,s^{-1}}$ and $3.983pm0.007times10^{38},mathrm{erg,s^{-1}}$. Both values are much higher than the critical luminosity of $approx1.5times10^{37},mathrm{erg,s^{-1}}$ above which a radiation dominated shock front may be expected. This adds a new object to the sparse set of three systems that have a cyclotron line observed at luminosities in excess of $10^{38},mathrm{erg,s^{-1}}$. A broad ($sigmaapprox0.45$ keV) Fe emission line is observed in the spectrum at a central energy of $6.58_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ keV in both epochs. The pulse profile of the pulsar was observed to be highly asymmetric with a sharply rising and slowly falling profile of the primary peak. We also observed minor variations in the cyclotron line energy and width as a function of the rotation phase.% As in observations of other cyclotron absorption line sources, there is a small ($Deltaphilesssim0.1$) phase difference between the peak of the cyclotron energy variation and the peak of the flux variation.
