We present angle-resolved photoemission data from Cu(111). Using a focused 6 eV continuous wave laser for photo-excitation, we achieve a high effective momentum resolution enabling the first detection of the Rashba spin splitting in the Shockley surface state on Cu(111). The magnitude of the spin-splitting of Delta k ~ 0.006 A^-1 is surprisingly large and exceeds values predicted for the analogous surface state on Ag(111) but is reproduced by first principles calculations. We further resolve a kink in the dispersion which we attribute to electron-phonon coupling.

We report on the electronic structure of $alpha$-Sn films in the very low thickness regime grown on InSb(111)A. High-resolution low photon energies angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) allows for the direct observation of the linearly dispersing 2D t opological surface states (TSSs) that exist between the second valence band and the conduction band. The Dirac point of this TSS was found to be 200meV below the Fermi level in 10-nm-thick $alpha$-Sn films, which enables the observation of the hybridization gap opening at the Dirac point of the TSS for thinner films. The crossover to a quasi-2D electronic structure is accompanied by a full gap opening at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with our density functional theory calculations. We further identify the thickness regime of $alpha$-Sn films where the hybridization gap in TSS coexists with the topologically non-trivial electronic structure and one can expect the presence of a 1D helical edge states.
The interaction between magnetic impurities and the gapless surface state is of critical importance for realizing novel quantum phenomena and new functionalities in topological insulators. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic exper iments with density functional theory calculations, we show that surface deposition of Cr atoms on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ does not lead to gap opening of the surface state at the Dirac point, indicating the absence of long-range out-of-plane ferromagnetism down to our measurement temperature of 15 K. This is in sharp contrast to bulk Cr doping, and the origin is attributed to different Cr occupation sites. These results highlight the importance of nanoscale configuration of doped magnetic impurities in determining the electronic and magnetic properties of topological insulators.
The electronic structure of a prototype Kondo system, a cobalt impurity in a copper host is calculated with accurate taking into account of correlation effects on the Co atom. Using the recently developed continuous-time QMC technique, it is possible to describe the Kondo resonance with a complete four-index Coulomb interaction matrix. This opens a way for completely first-principle calculations of the Kondo temperature. We have demonstrated that a standard practice of using a truncated Hubbard Hamiltonian to consider the Kondo physics can be quantitatively inadequate.
Novel phases of two dimensional electron systems resulting from new surface or interface modified electronic structures have generated significant interest in material science. We utilize photoemission spectroscopy to show that the near-surface elect ronic structure of a bulk insulating iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ lying near metal-Mott insulator transition exhibit weak metallicity signified by finite electronic spectral weight at the Fermi level. The surface electrons exhibit a unique spin structure resulting from an interplay of spin-orbit, Coulomb interaction and surface quantum magnetism, distinct from a topological insulator state. Our results suggest the experimental realization of a novel quasi two dimensional interacting electron surface ground state, opening the door for exotic quantum entanglement and transport phenomena in iridate-based oxide devices.

We present a theoretical study of surface states close to 3d transition metal adatoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) on a Cu(111) surface in terms of an embedding technique using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. For each of the adat oms we found resonances in the s-like states to be attributed to a localization of the surface states in the presence of an impurity. We studied the change of the s-like densities of states in the vicinity of the surface state band-edge due to scattering effects mediated via the adatoms d-orbitals. The obtained results show that a magnetic impurity causes spin-polarization of the surface states. In particular, the long-range oscillations of the spin-polarized s-like density of states around an Fe adatom are demonstrated.
