Ab initio calculations show an antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition around 9-10 GPa and a magnetic anomaly at 12 GPa in BiFeO3. The magnetic phase transition also involves a structural and insulator-metal transition. The G-type AFM configuration under pressure leads to an increase of the y component and decrease of the z component of the magnetization, which is caused by the splitting of the dz2 orbital from doubly degenerate eg states. Our results agree with recent experimental results.

The negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) center in diamond has realized new frontiers in quantum technology. Here, the centers optical and spin resonances are observed under hydrostatic pressures up to 60 GPa. Our observations motivate powerful new techniques to measure pressure and image high pressure magnetic and electric phenomena. Our observations further reveal a fundamental inadequacy of the current model of the center and provide new insight into its electronic structure.
The electronic and local structural properties of CuO under pressure have been investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Cu K edge and ab-initio calculations, up to 17 GPa. The crystal structure of CuO consists of Cu motifs with in CuO$_4$ square planar units and two elongated apical Cu-O bonds. The CuO$_4$ square planar units are stable in the studied pressure range, with Cu-O distances that are approximately constant up to 5 GPa, and then decrease slightly up to 17 GPa. In contrast, the elongated Cu-O apical distances decrease continuously with pressure in the studied range. An anomalous increase of the mean square relative displacement (EXAFS Debye Waller, sigma$^2$) of the elongated Cu-O path is observed from 5 GPa up to 13 GPa, when a drastic reduction takes place in sigma$^2$. This is interpreted in terms of local dynamic disorder along the apical Cu-O path. At higher pressures (P>13 GPa), the local structure of Cu$^{2+}$ changes from a 4-fold square planar to a 4+2 Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral ion. We interpret these results in terms of the tendency of the Cu$^{2+}$ ion to form favorable interactions with the apical O atoms. Also, the decrease in Cu-O apical distance caused by compression softens the normal mode associated with the out-of-plane Cu movement. CuO is predicted to have an anomalous rise in permittivity with pressure as well as modest piezoelectricity in the 5-13 GPa pressure range. In addition, the near edge features in our XAS experiment show a discontinuity and a change of tendency at 5 GPa. For P < 5 GPa the evolution of the edge shoulder is ascribed to purely electronic effects which also affect the charge transfer integral. This is linked to a charge migration from the Cu to O, but also to an increase of the energy band gap, which show a change of tendency occurring also at 5 GPa.
The electronic structure, Fermi surface and elastic properties of the iso-structural and iso-electronic LaSn$_3$ and YSn$_3$ intermetallic compounds are studied under pressure within the framework of density functional theory including spin-orbit cou pling. The LaSn$_3$ Fermi surface consists of two sheets, of which the second is very complex. Under pressure a third sheet appears around compression $V/V_0=0.94$, while a small topology change in the second sheet is seen at compression $V/V_0=0.90$. This may be in accordance with the anomalous behaviour in the superconducting transition temperature observed in LaSn$_3$, which has been suggested to reflect a Fermi surface topological transition, along with a non-monotonic pressure dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level. The same behavior is not observed in YSn$_3$, the Fermi surface of which already includes three sheets at ambient conditions, and the topology remains unchanged under pressure. The reason for the difference in behaviour between LaSn$_3$ and YSn$_3$ is the role of spin-orbit coupling and the hybridization of La - $4f$ states with the Sn - $p$ states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is well explained using the band structure calculation. The elastic constants and related mechanical properties are calculated at ambient as well as at elevated pressures. The elastic constants increase with pressure for both compounds and satisfy the conditions for mechanical stability under pressure.
Electronic, structural, vibrational and elastic properties of PaN have been studied both at ambient and high pressures, using first principles methods with several commonly used parameterizations of the exchange-correlation energy. The generalized gr adient approximation (GGA) reproduces the ground state properties satisfactorily. Under pressure PaN is found to undergo a structural transition from NaCl to the R-3m structure near 58 GPa. The high pressure behavior of the acoustic phonon branch along the (1,0,0) and (1,1,0) directions, and the C44 elastic constant are anomalous, which signals the structural transition. With GGA exchange-correlation, a topological transition in the charge density occurs near the structural transition which may be regarded as a quantum phase transition, where the order parameter obeys a mean field scaling law. However, the topological transition is absent when other exchange-correlation functionals are invoked (local density approximation (LDA) and hybrid functional). Therefore, this constitutes an example of GGA and LDA leading to qualitatively different predictions, and it is of great interest to examine experimentally whether this topological transition occurs.
We report experimental evidence for pressure instabilities in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 and namely reveal two structural phase transitions around 3 GPa and 10 GPa by using diffraction and far-infrared spectroscopy at a synchrotron source. The int ermediate phase from 3 to 9 GPa crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, with octahedra tilts and small cation displacements. When the pressure is further increased the cation displacements (and thus the polar character) of BiFeO3 is suppressed above 10 GPa. The above 10 GPa observed non-polar orthorhombic Pnma structure is in agreement with recent theoretical ab-initio prediction, while the intermediate monoclinic phase was not predicted theoretically.
