We have investigated the infrared and Raman optical properties of BaMn2As2 in the ab-plane and along the c-axis. The most prominent features in the infrared spectra are the Eu and A2u phonon modes which show clear TO-LO splitting from the energy loss function analysis. All the phonon features we observed in infrared and Raman spectra are consistent with the calculated values. Compared to the iron-pnictide analog AFe2As2, this compound is much more two-dimensional in its electronic properties. For E || c-axis, the overall infrared reflectivity is insulating like. Within the ab-plane the material exhibits a semiconducting behavior. An energy gap 2{Delta}=48 meV can be clearly identified below room temperature.

The electrodynamic properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_As$_{2}$ single crystals have been investigated by reflectivity measurements in a wide frequency range. In the metallic state, the optical conductivit y consists of a broad incoherent background and a narrow Drude-like component which determines the transport properties; only the latter contribution strongly depends on the composition and temperature. This subsystem reveals a $T^2$ behavior in the dc resistivity and scattering rate disclosing a hidden Fermi-liquid behavior in the 122 iron-pnictide family. An extended Drude analysis yields the frequency dependence of the effective mass (with $m^*/m_bapprox 5$ in the static limit) and scattering rate that does not disclose a simple power law. The spectral weight shifts to lower energies upon cooling; a significant fraction is not recovered within the infrared range of frequencies.

The transport and complex optical properties of the electron-doped iron-arsenic superconductor BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 with Tc = 25 K have been examined in the Fe-As planes above and below Tc. A Bloch-Gruneisen analysis of the resistivity yields a weak ele ctron-phonon coupling constant lambda_ph ~ 0.2. The low-frequency optical response in the normal state appears to be dominated by the electron pocket and may be described by a weakly-interacting Fermi liquid with a Drude plasma frequency of omega_p,D ~ 7840 cm-1 (~ 0.972 eV) and scattering rate 1/tau_D ~ 125 cm-1 (~ 15 meV) just above Tc. The frequency-dependent scattering rate 1/tau(omega) has kinks at ~ 12 and 55 meV that appear to be related to bosonic excitations. Below Tc the majority of the superconducting plasma frequency originates from the electron pocket and is estimated to be omega_p,S ~ 5200 cm-1 (lambda0 ~ 3000 Angstroms) for T << Tc, indicating that less than half the free carriers in the normal state have collapsed into the condensate, suggesting that this material is not in the clean limit. Supporting this finding is the observation that this material falls close to the universal scaling line for a BCS dirty-limit superconductor in the weak-coupling limit. There are two energy scales for the superconductivity in the optical conductivity and photo-induced reflectivity at Delta1 ~ 3.1 +/- 0.2 meV and Delta2 ~ 7.4 +/- 0.3 meV. This corresponds to either the gaping of the electron and hole pockets, respectively, or an anisotropic s-wave gap on the electron pocket; both views are consistent with the s+/- model.
Insight into the electronic structure of the pnictide family of superconductors is obtained from quantum oscillation measurements. Here we review experimental quantum oscillation data that reveal a transformation from large quasi-two dimensional elec tron and hole cylinders in the paramagnetic overdoped members of the pnictide family to significantly smaller three-dimensional Fermi surface sections in the antiferromagnetic parent members, via a potential quantum critical point at which an effective mass enhancement is observed. Similarities with the Fermi surface evolution from the overdoped to the underdoped normal state of the cuprate superconducting family are discussed, along with the enhancement in antiferromagnetic correlations in both these classes of materials, and the potential implications for superconductivity.
A study of the temperature and field dependence of the penetration depth lambda of the superconductor RbFe_2As_2 (T_c=2.52 K) was carried out by means of muon-spin rotation measurements. In addition to the zero temperature value of the penetration de pth lambda(0)=267(5) nm, a determination of the upper critical field B_c2(0)=2.6(2) T was obtained. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier concentration is discussed within the framework of a multi-gap scenario. Compared to the other 122 systems which exhibit much higher Fermi level, a strong reduction of the large gap BCS ratio 2Delta/k_B T_c is observed. This is interpreted as a consequence of the absence of interband processes. Indications of possible pair-breaking effect are also discussed.

Electrical-resistivity and magnetic-susceptibility measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to p = 2.75 GPa have been performed on superconducting LiFeP. A broad superconducting (SC) region exists in the temperature - pressure (T-p) phase diagram. No indications for a spin-density-wave transition have been found, but an enhanced resistivity coefficient at low pressures hints at the presence of magnetic fluctuations. Our results show that the superconducting state in LiFeP is more robust than in the isostructural and isoelectronic LiFeAs. We suggest that this finding is related to the nearly regular [FeP_4] tetrahedron in LiFeP.
