In materials science the phase field crystal approach has become popular to model crystallization processes. Phase field crystal models are in essence Landau-Ginzburg-type models, which should be derivable from the underlying microscopic description of the system in question. We present a study on classical density functional theory in three stages of approximation leading to a specific phase field crystal model, and we discuss the limits of applicability of the models that result from these approximations. As a test system we have chosen the three--dimensional suspension of monodisperse hard spheres. The levels of density functional theory that we discuss are fundamental measure theory, a second-order Taylor expansion thereof, and a minimal phase-field crystal model. We have computed coexistence densities, vacancy concentrations in the crystalline phase, interfacial tensions and interfacial order parameter profiles, and we compare these quantities to simulation results. We also suggest a procedure to fit the free parameters of the phase field crystal model.

We perform a comparative study of the free energies and the density distributions in hard sphere crystals using Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory (employing Fundamental Measure functionals). Using a recently introduced technique ( Schilling and Schmid, J. Chem. Phys 131, 231102 (2009)) we obtain crystal free energies to a high precision. The free energies from Fundamental Measure theory are in good agreement with the simulation results and demonstrate the applicability of these functionals to the treatment of other problems involving crystallization. The agreement between FMT and simulations on the level of the free energies is also reflected in the density distributions around single lattice sites. Overall, the peak widths and anisotropy signs for different lattice directions agree, however, it is found that Fundamental Measure theory gives slightly narrower peaks with more anisotropy than seen in the simulations. Among the three types of Fundamental Measure functionals studied, only the White Bear II functional (Hansen-Goos and Roth, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18, 8413 (2006)) exhibits sensible results for the equilibrium vacancy concentration and a physical behavior of the chemical potential in crystals constrained by a fixed vacancy concentration.
In this paper the relationship between the density functional theory of freezing and phase field modeling is examined. More specifically a connection is made between the correlation functions that enter density functional theory and the free energy f unctionals used in phase field crystal modeling and standard models of binary alloys (i.e., regular solution model). To demonstrate the properties of the phase field crystal formalism a simple model of binary alloy crystallization is derived and shown to simultaneously model solidification, phase segregation, grain growth, elastic and plastic deformations in anisotropic systems with multiple crystal orientations on diffusive time scales.
Plastic deformation mediated by collective dislocation dynamics is investigated in the two-dimensional phase-field crystal model of sheared single crystals. We find that intermittent fluctuations in the dislocation population number accompany bursts in the plastic strain-rate fluctuations. Dislocation number fluctuations exhibit a power-law spectral density $1/f^2$ at high frequencies $f$. The probability distribution of number fluctuations becomes bimodal at low driving rates corresponding to a scenario where low density of defects alternate at irregular times with high population of defects. We propose a simple stochastic model of dislocation reaction kinetics that is able to capture these statistical properties of the dislocation density fluctuations as a function of shear rate.
Using density functionals from fundamental measure theory, phase diagrams and crystal-fluid surface tensions in additive and nonadditive (Asakura-Oosawa model) two-dimensional hard disk mixtures are determined for the whole range of size ratios $q$ b etween disks, assuming random disorder in the crystal phase. The fluid-crystal transitions are first-order due to the assumption of a periodic unit cell in the density functional calculations. Qualitatively, the shape of the phase diagrams is similar to the case of three-dimensional hard sphere mixtures. For the nonadditive case, a broadening of the fluid-crystal coexistence region is found for small $q$ whereas for higher $q$ a vapor--fluid transition intervenes. In the additive case, we find a sequence of spindle type, azeotropic and eutectic phase diagrams upon lowering $q$ from 1 to 0.6. The transition from azeotropic to eutectic is different from the three-dimensional case. Surface tensions in general become smaller (up to a factor 2) upon addition of a second species and they are rather small. The minimization of the functionals proceeds without restrictions and optimized graphics card routines are used.
The critical dynamics of dislocation avalanches in plastic flow is examined using a phase field crystal (PFC) model. In the model, dislocations are naturally created, without any textit{ad hoc} creation rules, by applying a shearing force to the perf ectly periodic ground state. These dislocations diffuse, interact and annihilate with one another, forming avalanche events. By data collapsing the event energy probability density function for different shearing rates, a connection to interface depinning dynamics is confirmed. The relevant critical exponents agree with mean field theory predictions.
