The spin-frustrated conductor Mn$_3$Pt exhibits a characteristic magnetic structure called partial disorder in which some spin sites can form magnetic order through the generation of non-ordered sites that locally relieve the frustration. Here we report the results of a single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering study of this compound. The measured momentum $vec{Q}$ correlations of diffusive magnetic scattering reveal that the paramagnetic phase exhibits short-range spin fluctuations with the same type of partial disorder. Its relation to conductivity is also discussed.

Neutron scattering measurements were performed to investigate magnetic excitations in a single-crystal sample of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2, a parent compound of a recently discovered family of Fe-based superconductors. In the ordered state, we observe low energy spin-wave excitations with a gap energy of 9.8(4) meV. The in-plane spin-wave velocity v_ab and out-of-plane spin-wave velocity v_c measured at 12 meV are 280(150) and 57(7) meV A, respectively. At high energy, we observe anisotropic scattering centered at the antiferromagnetic wave vectors. This scattering indicates two-dimensional spin dynamics, which possibly exist inside the Stoner continuum. At T_N=136(1) K, the gap closes, and quasi-elastic scattering is observed above T_N, indicative of short-range spin fluctuations. In the paramagnetic state, the scattering intensity along the L direction becomes rodlike, characteristic of uncorrelated out-of-plane spins, attesting to the two-dimensionality of the system.

Neutron scattering can provide detailed information about the energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic dynamics of materials provided sufficiently large single crystals are available. This requirement has limited the number of rare earth high t emperature superconducting materials that have been studied in any detail. However, improvements in crystal growth in recent years has resulted in considerable progress in our understanding of the behaviour of the magnetism of the CuO planes in both the superconducting and normal state. This review will focus primarily on the spin fluctuations in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x} since these are the two systems for which the most detailed results are available. Although gaps in our understanding remain, there is now a consistent picture of on the spin fluctuation spectra in both systems as well as the changes induced by the superconducting transition. For both La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x} the normal state response is characterised by incommensurate magnetic fluctuations. The low energy excitations are suppressed by the superconducting transition with a corresponding enhancement in the response at higher energies. For YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x} the superconducting state is accompanied by the rapid development of a commensurate resonant response whose energy varies with T_{c}. In underdoped samples this resonance persists above T_{c}.

Mn$_3$O$_4$ is a spin frustrated magnet that adopts a tetragonally distorted spinel structure at ambient conditions and a CaMn$_2$O$_4$-type postspinel structure at high pressure. We conducted both optical measurements and emph{ab} emph{initio} calcu lations, and systematically studied the electronic band structures of both the spinel and postspinel Mn$_3$O$_4$ phases. For both phases, theoretical electronic structures are consistent with the optical absorption spectra, and display characteristic band-splitting of the conduction band. The band gap obtained from the absorption spectra is 1.91(6) eV for the spinel phase, and 0.94(2) eV for the postspinel phase. Both phases are charge-transfer type insulators. The Mn 3emph{d} $t_2$$_g$ and O 2emph{p} form antibonding orbitals situated at the conduction band with higher energy.
We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the stoichiometric iron-based superconductor LiFeAs. We find evidence for (i) magnetic scattering consistent with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (ii) an increase in intensity in the s uperconducting state at low energies, similar to the resonant magnetic excitation observed in other iron-based superconductors. The results do not support a recent theoretical prediction of spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity in LiFeAs, and instead suggest that the mechanism of superconductivity is similar to that in the other iron-based superconductors.
We report the signatures of dynamic spin fluctuations in the layered honeycomb Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ compound, with a 3$d$ S = 1/2 $d^9$ Cu$^{2+}$ configuration, through muon spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) and neutron scattering studies. Our zer o-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$mu$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice.
