The comparative study of the substitution of zinc and lithium for iron in the 114 ferrites, YBaFe4O7 and CaBaFe4O7, shows that these diamagnetic cations play a major role in tuning the competition between ferrimagnetism and magnetic frustration in these oxides. The substitution of Li or Zn for Fe in the cubic phase YBaFe4O7 leads to a structural transition to a hexagonal phase YBaFe4-xMxO7, for M = Li (0.30 < x < 0.75) and for M = Zn (0.40 < x < 1.50). It is seen that for low doping values i.e. x = 0.30 (for Li) and x = 0.40 (for Zn), these diamagnetic cations induce a strong ferrimagnetic component in the samples, in contrast to the spin glass behaviour of the cubic phase. In all the hexagonal phases, YBaFe4-xMxO7 and CaBaFe4-xMxO7 with M = Li and Zn, it is seen that in the low doping regime (x ~ 0.3 to 0.5), the competition between ferrimagnetism and 2 D magnetic frustration is dominated by the average valency of iron. In contrast, in the high doping regime (x ~ 1.5), the emergence of a spin glass is controlled by the high degree of cationic disorder, irrespective of the iron valency.

The Cairo pentagonal lattice, consisting of an irregular pentagonal tiling of magnetic ions on two inequivalent sites (3- and 4-co-ordinated ones), represents a fascinating example for studying geometric frustration effects in two-dimensions. In this work, we investigate the spin $S$ = $1/2$ Cairo pentagonal lattice with respect to selective exchange coupling (which effectively corresponds to a virtual doping of $x$ = $0, 1/6, 1/3$), in a nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic Ising model. We also develop a simple method to quantify geometric frustration in terms of a frustration index $phi(beta,T)$, where $beta$ = $J/tilde{J}$, the ratio of the two exchange couplings required by the symmetry of the Cairo lattice. At $T = 0$, the undoped Cairo pentagonal lattice shows antiferromagnetic ordering for $beta le beta_{crit} = 2$, but undergoes a first-order transition to a ferrimagnetic phase for $beta >$ $beta_{crit}$. The results show that $phi(beta,T = 0)$ tracks the transition in the form of a cusp maximum at $beta_{crit}$. While both phases show frustration, the obtained magnetic structures reveal that the frustration originates in different bonds for the two phases. The frustration and ferrimagnetic order get quenched by selective exchange coupling, and lead to robust antiferromagnetic ordering for $x$ = 1/6 and 1/3. From mean-field calculations, we determine the temperature-dependent sub-lattice magnetizations for $x$ = $0, 1/6$ and $1/3$. The calculated results are discussed in relation to known experimental results for trivalent Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ and mixed valent BiFe$_2$O$_{4.63}$. The study identifies the role of frustration effects, the ratio $beta$ and selective exchange coupling for stabilizing ferrimagnetic versus anti-ferromagnetic order in the Cairo pentagonal lattice.
An in-depth analysis of Zn/Al doped nickel ferrites grown by reactive magnetron sputtering is relevant due to their promising characteristics for applications in spintronics. The material is insulating and ferromagnetic at room temperature with an ad ditional low magnetic damping. By studying the complex interplay between strain and cation distribution their impact on the magnetic properties, i.e. anisotropy, damping and g-factor is unravelled. In particular, a strong influence of the lattice site occupation of Ni$^{2+}_{text{Td}}$ and cation coordination of Fe$^{2+}_{text{Oh}}$ on the intrinsic damping is found. Furthermore, the critical role of the incorporation of Zn$^{2+}$ and Al$^{3+}$ is evidenced by comparison with a sample of altered composition. Especially, the dopant Zn$^{2+}$ is evidenced as a tuning factor for Ni$^{2+}_{text{Td}}$ and therefore unquenched orbital moments directly controlling the g-factor. A strain-independent reduction of the magnetic anisotropy and damping by adapting the cation distribution is demonstrated.
Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ shows clear discrepancy with the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gorkov law giving the behavior of $T_c$ with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we derive a model to account for the striking feature of $T_c$ in organic superconductors for different types of disorder by considering the segregated texture of the system. We show that the calculated $T_c$ quantitatively agrees with experiments. We also focus on the role of superconducting fluctuations on the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of layered superconductors showing slab structure where superconducting domains are sandwiched by non-superconducting regions. We found that $H_{c2}$ may be strongly enhanced by such fluctuations.

Substantial amounts of the transition metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni can be substituted for Li in single crystalline Li$_2$(Li$_{1-x}T_x$)N. Isothermal and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal local magnetic moments with magnitudes sign ificantly exceeding the spin-only value. The additional contributions stem from unquenched orbital moments that lead to rare-earth-like behavior of the magnetic properties. Accordingly, extremely large magnetic anisotropies have been found. Most notably, the magnetic anisotropy alternates as easy-plane $rightarrow$ easy-axis $rightarrow$ easy-plane $rightarrow$ easy-axis when progressing from $T$ = Mn $rightarrow$ Fe $rightarrow$ Co $rightarrow$ Ni. This behavior can be understood based on a perturbation approach in an analytical, single-ion model. The calculated magnetic anisotropies show a surprisingly good agreement with the experiment and capture the basic features observed for the different transition metals.
The spinel-structured lithium manganese oxide (LiMn$_2$O$_4$) is a material currently used as cathode for secondary lithium-ion batteries, but whose properties are not yet fully understood. Here, we report a computational investigation of the inversi on thermodynamics and electronic behaviour of LiMn$_2$O$_4$ derived from spin-polarised density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard Hamiltonian and long-range dispersion corrections (DFT+$U-$D3). Based on the analysis of the configurational free energy, we have elucidated a partially inverse equilibrium cation distribution for the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ spinel. This equilibrium degree of inversion is rationalised in terms of the crystal field stabilisation effects and the difference between the size of the cations. We compare the atomic charges with the oxidation numbers for each degree of inversion. We found segregation of the Mn charge once these ions occupy the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel. We have obtained the atomic projections of the electronic band structure and density of states, showing that the normal LiMn$_2$O$_4$ has half-metallic properties, while the fully inverse spinel is an insulator. This material is in the ferrimagnetic state for the inverse and partially inverse cation arrangement. The optimised lattice and oxygen parameters, as well as the equilibrium degree of inversion, are in agreement with the available experimental data. The partially inverse equilibrium degree of inversion is important in the interpretation of the lithium ion migration and surface properties of the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ spinel.
