Defects are believed to play a fundamental role in the supersolid state of 4He. We report on studies by exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations at zero temperature of the properties of solid 4He in presence of many vacancies, up to 30 in two dimensions (2D). In all studied cases the crystalline order is stable at least as long as the concentration of vacancies is below 2.5%. In the 2D system for a small number, n_v, of vacancies such defects can be identified in the crystalline lattice and are strongly correlated with an attractive interaction. On the contrary when n_v~10 vacancies in the relaxed system disappear and in their place one finds dislocations and a revival of the Bose-Einstein condensation. Thus, should zero-point motion defects be present in solid 4He, such defects would be dislocations and not vacancies, at least in 2D. In order to avoid using periodic boundary conditions we have studied the exact ground state of solid 4He confined in a circular region by an external potential. We find that defects tend to be localized in an interfacial region of width of about 15 A. Our computation allows to put as upper bound limit to zero--point defects the concentration 0.003 in the 2D system close to melting density.

We have studied the liquid - solid (L-S) phase transition of ^4He confined in nanoporous glass, which has interconnected nanopores of 2.5 nm in diameter. The L-S boundary is determined by the measurements of pressure and thermal response during slow cooling and warming. Below 1 K, the freezing pressure is elevated to 1.2 MPa from the bulk freezing pressure, and appears to be independent of temperature. The T-independent L-S boundary implies the existence of a localized Bose-Einstein condensation state, in which long-range superfluid coherence is destroyed by narrowness of the nanopores and random potential.
The superfluid transition in liquid 4He filled in Gelsil glass observed in recent experiments is discussed in the framework of quantum critical phenomena. We show that quantum fluctuations of phase are indeed important at the experimentally studied t emperature range owing to the small pore size of Gelsil, in contrast to 4He filled in previously studied porous media such as Vycor glass. As a consequence of an effective particle-hole symmetry, the quantum critical phenomena of the system are described by the 4D XY universality class, except at very low temperatures. The simple scaling agrees with the experimental data remarkably well.
We study the elasticity of perfect 4He at zero-temperature using the diffusion Monte Carlo method and a realistic semi-empirical pairwise potential to describe the He-He interactions. Specifically, we calculate the value of the elastic constants of h cp helium C_{ij} as a function of pressure up to 110 bar. It is found that the pressure dependence of all five non-zero C_{ij} is linear and we provide accurate parametrization of each of them. Our elastic constants results are compared to previous variational calculations and low-temperature measurements and in general notably good agreement is found among them. Furthermore, we report T = 0 results for the Gruneisen parameters, sound velocities and Debye temperature of hcp 4He. This work represents the first of a series of computational studies aimed at thoroughly characterizing the response of solid helium to external stress-strain.
We report Bose-Einstein condensation of weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$molecules in a crossed optical trap near a Feshbach resonance. We measure a molecule-molecule scattering length of$170^{+100}_{-60}$ nm at 770 G, in good agreement with theory. We study th e expansion of the cloud in the BEC-BCS crossoverregion.
We study the $SU(2)$ gauge-Higgs model in two Euclidean dimensions using the tensor renormalization group (TRG) approach. We derive a tensor formulation for this model in the unitary gauge and compare the expectation values of different observables b etween TRG and Monte Carlo simulations finding excellent agreement between the two methods. In practice we find the TRG method to be far superior to Monte Carlo simulation for calculations of the Polyakov loop correlation function which is used to extract the static quark potential.
