Rest-frame UV--Optically Selected Galaxies at 2.3<z<3.5: Searching for Dusty Star-forming and Passively-Evolving Galaxies

A new set of color selection criteria (VJL) analogous with the BzK method is designed to select both star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and passively-evolving galaxies (PEGs) at 2.3<z<3.5 by using rest-frame UV--optical (V-J vs. J-L) colors. The criteria are thoroughly tested with theoretical stellar population synthesis models and real galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts to evaluate their efficiency and contamination. We apply the well-tested VJL criteria to the HST/WFC3 Early Release Science field and study the physical properties of selected galaxies. The redshift distribution of selected SFGs peaks at z~2.7, slightly lower than that of Lyman Break Galaxies at z~3. Comparing the observed mid-infrared fluxes of selected galaxies with the prediction of pure stellar emission, we find that our VJL method is effective at selecting massive dusty SFGs that are missed by the Lyman Break Technique. About half of the star formation in massive (M_{star}>10^{10}M_{Sun}) galaxies at 2.3<z<3.5 is contributed by dusty (extinction E(B-V)>0.4) SFGs, which however, only account for ~20% of the number density of massive SFGs. We also use the mid-infrared fluxes to clean our PEG sample, and find that galaxy size can be used as a secondary criterion to effectively eliminate the contamination of dusty SFGs. The redshift distribution of the cleaned PEG sample peaks at z~2.5. We find 6 PEG candidates at z>3 and discuss possible methods to distinguish them from dusty contamination. We conclude that at least part of our candidates are real PEGs at z~3, implying that this type of galaxies began to form their stars at z>5. We measure the integrated stellar mass density of PEGs at z~2.5 and set constraints on it at z>3. We find that the integrated stellar mass density grows by at least about factor of 10 in 1 Gyr at 3<z<5 and by another factor of 10 in next 3.5 Gyr (1<z<3).

We present properties of individual and composite rest-UV spectra of continuum- and narrowband-selected star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at a redshift of 2<z<3.5 discovered by the MUSYC collaboration in the ECDF-S. Among our sample of 81 UV-bright SFGs, 59 have R<25.5, of which 32 have rest-frame equivalent widths W_{Ly{alpha}}>20 {AA}, the canonical limit to be classified as a LAE. We divide our dataset into subsamples based on properties we are able to measure for each individual galaxy: Ly{alpha} equivalent width, rest-frame UV colors, and redshift. Among our subsample of galaxies with R<25.5, those with rest-frame W_{Ly{alpha}}>20 {AA} have bluer UV continua, weaker low-ionization interstellar absorption lines, weaker C IV absorption, and stronger Si II* nebular emission than those with W_{Ly{alpha}}<20 {AA}. We measure a typical velocity offset of {Delta}v~600 km s$^{-1}$ between Ly{alpha} emission and low-ionization absorption among our subsamples. We find that the interstellar component, as opposed to the stellar component, dominates the high-ionization absorption line profiles. We find the low- and high-ionization Si ionization states have similar kinematic properties, yet the low-ionization absorption is correlated with Ly$alpha$ emission and the high-ionization absorption is not. These trends are consistent with outflowing neutral gas being in the form of neutral clouds embedded in ionized gas as previously suggested by cite{Steidel2010}. Moreover, our galaxies with bluer UV colors have stronger Ly{alpha} emission, weaker low-ionization absorption and more prominent nebular emission line profiles. Among our dataset, UV-bright galaxies with W_{Ly{alpha}}>20 {AA} exhibit weaker Ly{alpha} emission at lower redshifts, although we caution that this could be caused by spectroscopic confirmation of low Ly{alpha} equivalent width galaxies being harder at z~3 than z~2.
We present results of optical spectroscopic observations of candidates of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at $z sim 5$ in the region including the GOODS-N and the J0053+1234 region by using GMOS-N and GMOS-S, respectively. Among 25 candidates, five objec ts are identified to be at $z sim 5$ (two of them were already identified by an earlier study) and one object very close to the color-selection window turned out to be a foreground galaxy. With this spectroscopically identified sample and those from previous studies, we derived the lower limits on the number density of bright ($M_{UV}<-22.0$ mag) LBGs at $z sim 5$. These lower limits are comparable to or slightly smaller than the number densities of UV luminosity functions (UVLFs) that show the smaller number density among $z sim 5$ UVLFs in literature. However, by considering that there remain many LBG candidates without spectroscopic observations, the number density of bright LBGs is expected to increase by a factor of two or more. The evidence for the deficiency of UV luminous LBGs with large Ly$alpha$ equivalent widths was reinforced. We discuss possible causes for the deficiency and prefer the interpretation of dust absorption.
We present the average rest-frame spectrum of high-redshift dusty, star-forming galaxies from 250-770GHz. This spectrum was constructed by stacking ALMA 3mm spectra of 22 such sources discovered by the South Pole Telescope and spanning z=2.0-5.7. In addition to multiple bright spectral features of 12CO, [CI], and H2O, we also detect several faint transitions of 13CO, HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CN, and use the observed line strengths to characterize the typical properties of the interstellar medium of these high-redshift starburst galaxies. We find that the 13CO brightness in these objects is comparable to that of the only other z>2 star-forming galaxy in which 13CO has been observed. We show that the emission from the high-critical density molecules HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CN is consistent with a warm, dense medium with T_kin ~ 55K and n_H2 >~ 10^5.5 cm^-3. High molecular hydrogen densities are required to reproduce the observed line ratios, and we demonstrate that alternatives to purely collisional excitation are unlikely to be significant for the bulk of these systems. We quantify the average emission from several species with no individually detected transitions, and find emission from the hydride CH and the linear molecule CCH for the first time at high redshift, indicating that these molecules may be powerful probes of interstellar chemistry in high-redshift systems. These observations represent the first constraints on many molecular species with rest-frame transitions from 0.4-1.2mm in star-forming systems at high redshift, and will be invaluable in making effective use of ALMA in full science operations.
Using the HST/ACS $I_{rm F814W}$-band data, we investigated distribution of apparent axial ratios of $sim21000$ galaxies with $M_{V}<-20$ at $0.2<z<1.0$ in the COSMOS field as a function of stellar mass, specific star formation rate (sSFR), and redsh ift. We statistically estimated intrinsic 3-dimensional shapes of these galaxies by fitting the axial-ratio distribution with triaxial ellipsoid models characterized by face-on (middle-to-long) and edge-on (short-to-long) axial ratios $B/A$ and $C/A$. We found that the transition from thin disk to thick spheroid occurs at $Delta$MS $sim-1$ dex, i.e., 10 times lower sSFR than that of the main sequence for galaxies with $M_{rm star} = 10^{10}$--$10^{11} M_{odot}$ at $0.2<z<1.0$. Furthermore, the intrinsic thickness ($C/A$) of passively evolving galaxies with $M_{rm star}=10^{10}$--$10^{11}M_{odot}$ significantly decreases with time from $C/A sim 0.40$ -- $0.50$ at $zsim 0.8$ to $C/Asim0.33$ -- $0.37$ at $zsim0.4$, while those galaxies with $M_{rm star}>10^{11}M_{odot}$ have $C/Asim0.5$ irrespective of redshift. On the other hand, star-forming galaxies on the main sequence with $10^{9.5}$--$10^{11}M_{odot}$ show no significant evolution in their shape at $0.2<z<1.0$, but their thickness depends on stellar mass;more massive star-forming galaxies tend to have lower $C/A$ (thinner shape) than low-mass ones. These results suggest that some fraction of star-forming galaxies with a thin disk, which started to appear around $zsim1$, quench their star formation without violent morphological change, and these newly added quiescent galaxies with a relatively thin shape cause the significant evolution in the axial-ratio distribution of passively evolving galaxies with $M_{rm star}<10^{11}M_{odot}$ at $z<1$.

We apply a new approach to quantifying galaxy morphology and identifying galaxy mergers to the rest-frame far-ultraviolet images of 82 z ~ 4 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and 55 1.2 < z < 1.8 emission-line galaxies in the GOODS and Ultra Deep Fields. W e compare the distributions of the Gini coefficient (G), second-order moment of the brightest 20% of galaxy light (M20), and concentration (C) for high-redshift and low-redshift galaxies with average signal to noise per pixel > 2.5 and Petrosian radii > 0.3 arcsec. Ten of the 82 LBGs have M20 >= -1.1 and possess bright double or multiple nuclei, implying a major-merger fraction of star-forming galaxies ~ 10-25% at M_{FUV} < -20, depending on our incompleteness corrections. Galaxies with bulge-like morphologies (G >= 0.55, M20 < -1.6) make up ~ 30% of the z ~ 4 LBG sample, while the remaining ~ 50% have G and M20 values higher than expected for smooth bulges and disks and may be star-forming disks, minor-mergers or post-mergers. The star-forming z ~ 1.5 galaxy sample has a morphological distribution which is similar to the UDF z ~ 4 LBGs, with an identical fraction of major-merger candidates but fewer spheroids. The observed morphological distributions are roughly consistent with current hierarchical model predictions for the major-merger rates and minor-merger induced starbursts at z ~ 1.5 and ~4. We also examine the rest-frame FUV-NUV and FUV-B colors as a function of morphology and find no strong correlations at either epoch.
