We study theoretically the coupled multiferroic dynamics of one-dimensional ferroelectric/ferromagnet chains driven by harmonic magnetic and electric fields as a function of the chain length. A linear magnetoelectric coupling is dominated by the spin-polarized screening charge at the interface. We performed Monte-Carlo simulations and calculations based on the coupled Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert and Landau-Khalatnikov equations showing that the net magnetization and the total polarization of thin heterostructures, i.e. with up to ten ferroelectric and ferromagnetic sites counted from the interface, can be completely reversed by external electric and magnetic fields, respectively. However, for larger system solely a certain magnetoelectrical control can be achieved.

The solutions for the helical edge states for an effective continuum model for the quantum spin Hall effect in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells are presented. For a sample of a large size, the solution gives the linear dispersion for the edge states. However, in a finite strip geometry, the edge states at two sides will couple with each other, which leads to a finite energy gap in the spectra. The gap decays in an exponential law of the width of sample. The magnetic field dependence of the edge states illustrates the difference of the edge states from those of a conventional quantum Hall strip of two-dimensional electron gas.

Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (Fe-FETs) with ferroelectric hafnium oxide (FE HfO2) as gate insulator are being extensively explored as a promising device candidate for three-dimensional (3D) NAND memory application. FE HfO2 exhibits long ret ention over 10 years, high endurance over 1012 cycles, high speed with sub-ns polarization switching, and high remnant polarization of 10-30 {mu}C/cm2. However, the performance of Fe-FETs is known to be much worse than FE HfO2 capacitors, which is not completely understood. In this work, we developed a comprehensive Fe-FET model based on a charge balance framework. The role of charge balance and the impact of leakage-assist-switching mechanism on the memory characteristics of Fe-FETs with M/FE/DE/S (Metal/Ferroelectric/Dielectric/Semiconductor) gate stack is studied. It is found that the FE/DE interface and DE layer instead of FE layer is critical to determine the memory characteristics of Fe-FETs, and experimental Fe-FETs can be well explained by this model, where the discrepancy between FE capacitors and Fe-FETs are successfully understood.
Near-field optical microscopy by means of infrared photocurrent mapping has rapidly developed in recent years. In this letter we introduce a near-field induced contrast mechanism arising when a conducting surface, exhibiting a magnetic moment, is exp osed to a nanoscale heat source. The magneto-caloritronic response of the sample to near-field excitation of a localized thermal gradient leads to a contrast determined by the local state of magnetization. By comparing the measured electric response of a magnetic reference sample with numerical simulations we derive an estimate of the field enhancement and the corresponding temperature profile induced on the sample surface.
We present a study of the magnetoresistance of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a function of the sample size. Our results show unequivocally that the magnetoresistance reduces with the sample size even for samples of hundreds of micromet ers size. This sample size effect is due the large mean free path and Fermi wavelength of carriers in graphite and may explain the observed practically absence of magnetoresistance in micrometer confined small graphene samples where quantum effects should be at hand. These were not taken into account in the literature yet and ask for a revision of experimental and theoretical work on graphite.
