We used the Nobeyama 45-m telescope to conduct a spectral line survey in the 3-mm band (85.1-98.4 GHz) toward one of the nearest galaxies with active galactic nucleus NGC 1068 and the prototypical starburst galaxy NGC 253. The beam size of this telescope is ~18, which was sufficient to spatially separate the nuclear molecular emission from the emission of the circumnuclear starburst region in NGC 1068. We detected rotational transitions of C2H, cyclic-C3H2, and H13CN in NGC 1068. These are detections of carbon-chain and carbon-ring molecules in NGC 1068. In addition, the C2H N = 1-0 lines were detected in NGC 253. The column densities of C2H were determined to be 3.4 x 10^15 cm^-2 in NGC 1068 and 1.8 x 10^15 cm^-2 in NGC 253. The column densities of cyclic-C3H2 were determined to be 1.7 x 10^13 cm^-2 in NGC 1068 and 4.4 x 10^13 cm^-2 in NGC 253. We calculated the abundances of these molecules relative to CS for both NGC 1068 and NGC 253, and found that there were no significant differences in the abundances between the two galaxies. This result suggests that the basic carbon-containing molecules are either insusceptible to AGN, or are tracing cold (T_rot ~10 K) molecular gas rather than X-ray irradiated hot gas.

Astronomical evolution mechanism of small size polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) was analyzed using the first principles quantum-chemical calculation. Starting model molecule was benzene (C6H6), which would be transformed to (C5H5) due to carbon void created by interstellar high speed proton attack. In a protoplanetary disk around a young star, molecules would be illuminated by high energy photon and ionized to be cationic-(C5H5). Calculation shows that from neutral to tri-cation, molecule keeps original configuration. At a step of sixth cation, there occurs surprising creation of cyclic-C3H2, which is the smallest PAH. Astronomical cyclic-C3H2 had been identified by radio astronomy. Deep photoionization of cyclic-C3H2 brings successive molecular change. Neutral and mono-cation keep cyclic configuration. At a step of di-cation, molecule was transformed to aliphatic chain-C3H2. Finally, chain-C3H2 was decomposed to pure carbon chain-C3 and two hydrogen atoms. Calculated infrared spectrum of those molecules was applied to observed spectrum of Herbig Ae young stars. Observed infrared spectrum could be partially explained by small molecules. Meanwhile, excellent coincidence was obtained by applying a larger molecules as like (C23H12)2+ or (C12H8)2+. Infrared observation is suitable for larger molecules and radio astronomy for smaller asymmetric molecules. It should be noted that these molecules could be identified in a natural way introducing two astronomical phenomena, that is, void-induced molecular deformation and deep photoionization.
We present results from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CS from the nearby galaxy NGC 1068 ($sim14$ Mpc). This Seyfert 2 barred galaxy possesses a circumnuclear disc (CND, $rsim200$ pc) and a starburst ring (SB rin g, $rsim1.3$ kpc). These high-resolution maps ($sim0.5$, $sim35$ pc) allow us to analyse specific sub-regions in the galaxy and investigate differences in line intensity ratios and physical conditions, particularly those between the CND and SB ring. Local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) analysis of the gas is used to calculate CS densities in each sub-region, followed by non-LTE analysis conducted using the radiative transfer code RADEX to fit observations and constrain gas temperature, CS column density and hydrogen density. Finally, the chemical code UCLCHEM is used to reconstruct the gas, allowing an insight into its origin and chemical history. The density of hydrogen in the CND is found to be $geq10^5$ cm$^{-2}$, although exact values vary, reaching $10^6$ cm$^{-2}$ at the AGN. The conditions in the two arms of the SB ring appear similar to one another, though the density found ($sim10^4$ cm$^{-2}$) is lower than in the CND. The temperature in the CND increases from east to west, and is also overall greater than found in the SB ring. These modelling methods indicate the requirement for multi-phase gas components in order to fit the observed emission over the galaxy. A larger number of high resolution transitions across the SLED may allow for further constraining of the conditions, particularly in the SB ring.
We report the first detection of galactic spiral structure by means of thermal emission from magnetically aligned dust grains. Our 89 $mu$m polarimetric imaging of NGC 1068 with the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera/Polarimeter (HAWC+) on NASA s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) also sheds light on magnetic field structure in the vicinity of the galaxys inner-bar and active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find correlations between the 89 $mu$m magnetic field vectors and other tracers of spiral arms, and a symmetric polarization pattern as a function of the azimuthal angle arising from the projection and inclination of the disk field component in the plane of the sky. The observations can be fit with a logarithmic spiral model with pitch angle of $16.9^{+2.7}_{-2.8}$$^{circ}$ and a disk inclination of $48pm2^{circ}$. We infer that the bulk of the interstellar medium from which the polarized dust emission originates is threaded by a magnetic field that closely follows the spiral arms. Inside the central starburst disk ($<1.6$ kpc), the degree of polarization is found to be lower than for far-infrared sources in the Milky Way, and has minima at the locations of most intense star formation near the outer ends of the inner-bar. Inside the starburst ring, the field direction deviates from the model, becoming more radial along the leading edges of the inner-bar. The polarized flux and dust temperature peak $sim 3-6$ NE of the AGN at the location of a bow shock between the AGN outflow and the surrounding interstellar medium, but the AGN itself is weakly polarized ($< 1$%) at both 53 and 89 um.
We present sub-arcsecond 7.5$-$13 $mu$m imaging- and spectro-polarimetric observations of NGC 1068 using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. At all wavelengths, we find: (1) A 90 $times$ 60 pc extended polarized feature in the norther n ionization cone, with a uniform $sim$44$^{circ}$ polarization angle. Its polarization arises from dust and gas emission in the ionization cone, heated by the active nucleus and jet, and further extinguished by aligned dust grains in the host galaxy. The polarization spectrum of the jet-molecular cloud interaction at $sim$24 pc from the core is highly polarized, and does not show a silicate feature, suggesting that the dust grains are different from those in the interstellar medium. (2) A southern polarized feature at $sim$9.6 pc from the core. Its polarization arises from a dust emission component extinguished by a large concentration of dust in the galaxy disc. We cannot distinguish between dust emission from magnetically aligned dust grains directly heated by the jet close to the core, and aligned dust grains in the dusty obscuring material surrounding the central engine. Silicate-like grains reproduce the polarized dust emission in this feature, suggesting different dust compositions in both ionization cones. (3) An upper limit of polarization degree of 0.3 per cent in the core. Based on our polarization model, the expected polarization of the obscuring dusty material is $lesssim$0.1 per cent in the 8$-$13 $mu$m wavelength range. This low polarization may be arising from the passage of radiation through aligned dust grains in the shielded edges of the clumps.
We present a 190-307 GHz broadband spectrum obtained with Z-Spec of NGC 1068 with new measurements of molecular rotational transitions. After combining our measurements with those previously published and considering the specific geometry of this Sey fert 2 galaxy, we conduct a multi-species Bayesian likelihood analysis of the density, temperature, and relative molecular abundances of HCN, HNC, CS, and HCO+. We find that these molecules trace warm (T > 100 K) gas of H2 number densities 10^4.2 - 10^4.9 cm^-3. Our models also place strong constraints on the column densities and relative abundances of these molecules, as well as on the total mass in the circumnuclear disk. Using the uniform calibration afforded by the broad Z-Spec bandpass, we compare our line ratios to X-ray dominated region (XDR) and photon-dominated region models. The majority of our line ratios are consistent with the XDR models at the densities indicated by the likelihood analysis, lending substantial support to the emerging interpretation that the energetics in the circumnuclear disk of NGC 1068 are dominated by accretion onto an active galactic nucleus.
