We present measurements of the circular dichroism of optically pumped Rb vapor near the D1 resonance line. Collisions with the buffer gases $^3$He and N$_2$ reduce the transparency of the vapor, even when fully polarized. We use two methods to measure this effect, show that the He results can be understood from RbHe potential curves, and show how this effect conspires with the spectral profile of the optical pumping light to increase the laser power demands for optical pumping of very optically thick samples.

We investigate the differential ionization probability of chiral molecules in the strong field regime as a function of the helicity of the incident light. To this end, we analyze the fourfold ionization of bromochlorofluoromethane (CHBrClF) with subs equent fragmentation into four charged fragments and different dissociation channels of the singly ionized methyloxirane. We observe a variation of the differential ionization probability in a range of several percent. Accordingly, we conclude that the helicity of light is a quantity that should be considered for the theoretical description of the strong field ionization rate of chiral molecules.
Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and fundamental in science, from particle physics to metamaterials. The most established technique of chiral discrimination - photoabsorption circular dichroism - relies on the magnetic properties of a chiral medium a nd yields an extremely weak chiral response. We propose and demonstrate a new, orders of magnitude more sensitive type of circular dichroism in neutral molecules: photoexitation circular dichroism. It does not rely on weak magnetic effects, but takes advantage of the coherent helical motion of bound electrons excited by ultrashort circularly polarized light. It results in an ultrafast chiral response and the efficient excitation of a macroscopic chiral density in an initially isotropic ensemble of randomly oriented chiral molecules. We probe this excitation without the aid of further chiral interactions using linearly polarized laser pulses. Our time-resolved study of vibronic chiral dynamics opens a way to the efficient initiation, control and monitoring of chiral chemical change in neutral molecules at the level of electrons.
We investigate few-photon ionization of lithium atoms prepared in the polarized 2$p$($m_ell=!+1$) state when subjected to femtosecond light pulses with left- or right-handed circular polarization at wavelengths between 665 nm and 920 nm. We consider whether ionization proceeds more favorably for the electric field co- or counter-rotating with the initial electronic current density. Strong asymmetries are found and quantitatively analyzed in terms of circular dichroism ($CD$). While the intensity dependence of the measured $CD$ values is rather weak throughout the investigated regime, a very strong sensitivity on the center wavelength of the incoming radiation is observed. While the co-rotating situation overall prevails, the counter-rotating geometry is strongly favored around 800 nm due to the 2$p$-3$s$ resonant transition, which can only be driven by counter-rotating fields. The observed features provide insights into the helicity dependence of light-atom interactions, and on the possible control of electron emission in atomic few-photon ionization by polarization-selective resonance enhancement.
In this letter we demonstrate universal symmetry breaking by means of magnetically induced circular dichroism. Magnetic field induces forbidden at zero field atomic transitions between $Delta F = pm2$ hyperfine levels. In a particular range of magnet ic field, intensities of these transitions experience significant enhancement. We have deduced a general rule applicable for the $D_2$ lines of all bosonic alkali atoms, that is transition intensity enhancement is larger for the case of $sigma^+$ than for $sigma^-$ excitation for $Delta F = +2$, whereas it is larger (e.g. up to $10^{11}$ times for $^{85}$Rb atoms) in the case of $sigma^-$ than for $sigma^+$ polarization for $Delta F = -2$. This asymmetric behaviour results in an explicit circular dichroism. For experimental verification we employed half-wavelength-thick atomic vapor nanocells using a derivative of selective reflection technique, which provides sub-Doppler spectroscopic linewidth ($sim$50 MHz). The presented theoretical curves well describe the experimental results. This effect can find applications particularly in parity violation experiments.
The transfer of orbital angular momentum from an optical vortex to an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate changes the vorticity of the condensate. The spatial mismatch between initial and final center-of-mass wavefunctions of the condensate influences si gnificantly the two-photon optical dipole transition between corresponding states. We show that the transition rate depends on the handedness of the optical orbital angular momentum leading to optical manipulation of matter-wave vortices and circular dichroism-like effect. Based on this effect, we propose a method to detect the presence and sign of matter-wave vortex of atomic superfluids. Only a portion of the condensate is used in the proposed detection method leaving the rest in its initial state.
