Subband structure and depolarization shifts in an ultra-high mobility GaAs/Al_{0.24}Ga_{0.76}As quantum well are studied using magneto-infrared spectroscopy via resonant subband Landau level coupling. Resonant couplings between the 1st and up to the 4th subbands are identified by well-separated anti-level-crossing split resonance, while the hy-lying subbands were identified by the cyclotron resonance linewidth broadening in the literature. In addition, a forbidden intersubband transition (1st to 3rd) has been observed. With the precise determination of the subband structure, we find that the depolarization shift can be well described by the semiclassical slab plasma model, and the possible origins for the forbidden transition are discussed.

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory we study the amplification of polaritons in a multiple-quantum-well resonant photonic crystal. For the Bragg-spaced multiple quantum wells under investigation we predict that in a typical pump-probe setup f our-wave mixing processes can lead to an unstable energy transfer from the pump into the probe and the background-free four-wave mixing directions. We find that under certain excitation conditions this phase-conjugate oscillation induced instability can lead to a large amplification of the weak probe pulse.
We study the energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron in the presence of both a perpendicular magnetic field and a potential. In the limit where the potential is small compared to the Landau level spacing, we show that the broadening of Landau l evels is simply expressed in terms of the structure factor of the potential. For potentials that are either periodic or random, we recover known results. Interestingly, for potentials with a dense Fourier spectrum made of Bragg peaks (as found, e.g., in quasicrystals), we find an algebraic broadening with the magnetic field characterized by the hyperuniformity exponent of the potential. Furthermore, if the potential is self-similar such that its structure factor has a discrete scale invariance, the broadening displays log-periodic oscillations together with an algebraic envelope.
The pairing of composite fermions (CFs), electron-flux quasi-particles, is commonly proposed to explain the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state observed at $ u=5/2$ in the first excited ($N=1$) Landau level (LL) of a two-dimensional electr on system (2DES). While well-established to exist in the lowest ($N=0$) LL, much is unknown about CFs in the $N=1$ LL. Here we carry out geometric resonance measurements to detect CFs at $ u=5/2$ by subjecting the 2DES to a one-dimensional density modulation. Our data, taken at a temperature of 0.3 K, reveal no geometric resonances for CFs in the $N=1$ LL. In stark contrast, we observe clear signatures of such resonances when $ u=5/2$ is placed in the $N=0$ LL of the anti-symmetric subband by varying the 2DES width. This finding implies that the CFs mean-free-path is significantly smaller in the $N=1$ LL compared to the $N=0$ LL. Our additional data as a function of in-plane magnetic field highlight the role of subband index and establish that CFs at $ u=5/2$ in the $N=0$ LL are more anisotropic in the symmetric subband than in the anti-symmetric subband.
We identify an unusual mechanism for quantum oscillations in nodal semimetals, driven by a single pair of Landau levels periodically closing their gap at the Fermi energy as a magnetic field is varied. These `zero Landau level quantum oscillations (Z QOs) appear in the nodal limit where the zero-field Fermi volume vanishes, and have distinctive periodicity and temperature dependence. We link the Landau spectrum of a two-dimensional (2D) nodal semimetal to the Rabi model, and show by exact solution that across the entire Landau fan, pairs of opposite-parity Landau levels are intertwined in a `serpentine manner. We propose 2D surfaces of topological crystalline insulators as natural settings for ZQOs, and comment on implications for anomaly physics in 3D nodal semimetals.
Spin-charge-lattice coupling mediated by multi-magnon processes is demonstrated in multiferroic BiFeO3. Experimental evidence of two and three magnons excitations as well as multimagnon coupling at electronic energy scales and high temperatures are r eported. Temperature dependent Raman experiments show up to five resonant enhancements of the 2-magnon excitation below the Neel temperature. These are shown to be collective interactions between on-site Fe d-d electronic resonance, phonons and multimagnons
